Perhaps this is what makes- Mrs. Rearhorse the worst sort of cannibal, For she's a character whose cannibalistic tendencies prompts her to eat her chil dren if they are in her way,' or her husband - and right on his "wedding night," too. This tropical insect which has lately even invaded non tropical regions, is certainly peculiar in many ways. Of course, not all peoples who have come in contact with the "rearhorse" call it that. Scien tifically it is a mantis, or more commonly designated as "praying mantis," not because it prays, but only because its general resting position is slightly significant of a "pray erful attitude." Once seized, the insect is pulled to the creature's mouth, which is located on the underside of the head like that of the shark. The mouth is equipped with powerful biting mandibles The head of the "rearhorse" is triangular, with black, prominent eyes that have a strangely intelligent look. This insect possesses the pe culiar ability of turning its head, unusual in insects, but made possible because the head is attached to a distinct neck. The famale praying mantis is often three or more inches long with a slender body whose color usually matches her surroundings. She is near ly invisible in the leaves where she hides. The position of the body gives the insect the appear ance of "rearing," hence the name "rearhorse." Some unin formed folks believe the in sect can "spit saliva" and is believed to , "kill mules," so they call the mantis, "the mulekiller." However the "rearhorse" is harmless to people or to mules. Because of its appetite for insects, and the great number necessary to satisfy its hun ger, probably came the reason for the belief that it was against the law to kill one. But there's nothing on the law books about not killing them. (Releasecfby The Register and Tribune Syndicate, 1959) Fencing on Pools Required by Bill i An ordinance requiring the fencing of privately-owned swimming pools in the city, "sufficient to make such pool inaccessable ,to small chil dren," was passed by the city council last night. The ordinance applies to all "excavated or portable swim ming pools, fish ponds, or oth er artificial bodies of water 18 inches or more in depth." Compliance with the ordi nance must be made within 60 days of its effective date. The effective date of an ordi nance customarily is 10 days after it is passed 'by the council". The motion before the coun cil last night called for a four foot high fence or wall around pools but Councilman Al Bradford, Ward II, asked for an amendment lowering the required height to three feet. Bradford said that many private pools are on the front or side of residences and that a four-foot fence might be un sightly. He suggested that a three-foot fence would be just as , efficient. The motion as amended was passed unani mously. .An employee in the build ing department estimated that there are about 50 pools in Medford. Klamath Falls-(UPD-It is esti mated by Great Northern rail way that its single track across the Lake Ewauna tres tle which burned Thursday, will be back in operation within a week. : MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Or. A Sunday, July 19, 1959 Borate Assists In Controlling Fire Five plane loads of borate slurry were dropped on a forest fire near Hildebrand by planes of the Medford Air Service late Thursday. Officials of the Klamath Forest Protective association had requested assistance from the Rogue River national for est personnel, local forest service officials reported. About 30,000 pounds of the chemical were dropped. The fire, which twice jumped out of control in two days, was reported completely contained by fire .trails early Friday. It has burned more than 2,600 acres of timber and brush. It was reported that the fire still was in danger of breaking out again if a shift or increase in wind occurred. Another 300-acre blaze on the "Klamath Indian reserva tion was in the mop-up stage and 12 separate fires in the Klamath Falls area, "since since Tuesday have burned 3,000 acres. TIME, May 18, 1959. s . mmm Passenger Passenger traffic at the Medford airport increased by 517 during the month of June over the same period a year ago, according to the monthly report of municipal activities by City Manager Robert A. Duff. A total of 7,100 pas sengers was reported. For the same period, 5,493 landings and take-offs were reported at the airport and 29,746 pounds of air freight were handled. The city re ceived a total of $3,536.22 in revenues from airport build ing and land rentals, -landing fees, and other miscellaneous items, according to the report. During June the city's build ing department issued 154 permits with a total valuation of $1,038,070.. Fees collected amounted to $3,939.60. Single Family Dwellings New single family dwellings accounted for the highest number of permits with a valuation of $289,800,' while six new businesses accounted for $590,400 in valuation, the highest category. Municipal court received $3,824.25 in fines during the month for 544 violations. Im APPLEGATE VALLEY Pre-Fair Set at School By MAUDE ZIEGLER Applegate Valley-The Ap- plegate Valley 4-H pre-f air will be held at Ruch school grounds Friday, July 31, beV ginning at 10 a.m. Livestock exhibited will include sheep, hogs, dairy and beef, and home economics clubs will display cooking-and sewing, according to Mrs. Harlan Cantrall. There also will be judging contests. Mrs. Fred Straube will be in charge of the lunch, and all voluntary assistance with the lunch will be -welcome, the leaders say. A good turn out is expected for the fair, which is alternated annually between Ruch and Applegate. , ' Mr. and Mrs. Ed Kam merer and Mr. and Mrs. Law rence Dunshee spent the week end on a fishing and camp- 1 ; Prompt Payment Procedure Noted Prompt' payment of social security benefits is the num ber one objective of every dis trict office, according to Ed ward Jacobson, district man ager of the Medford social security office. To accomplish this objec tive, all persons should con tact their local office within 90 days before they actually retire or become eligible for benefits. Early filing of claims will give the district office arid the claimants ample time to establish necessary earnings information and required proofs. This advance filing procedure permits certifica tion of the claim for payment, and the issuance of benefit checks at the earliest possible date. Jacobson suggested that claimants bring proof of 1958 earnings and proof of age, if available, on their first visit to the district office. Early receipt of this information may further reduce the wait ing period between filing and payment of benefit checks. George Liberace To Pay Alimony Indio, Calif. -(UPD Band leader George Liberace, brother of the famed pianist, must pay his wife $500 a month alimony pending hear ing of her divorce suit. The violinist and his wife, Jayne. both appeared in court here Friday but didn't speak to each other. Mrs. Liberace filed suit July 1 charging George with cruelty. They have been mar ried more than seven years. Mrs. Liberace also won ex clusive use of their Palm Springs home. Jackson S S Traffic Increases During June at Local Airport proper parking, which ac counted for $255.25, was re ported in 121 cases to lead the list of violations. Eighty-five violations of the basic rule resulted in $870 in fines and was followed by 48 citations for overtime parking. Five violators of driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor, netted $450 in fines, while $363 was received for. 42. violations of drunk in public. . Further breakdown in the municipal court violations and fines included 34, disobeyed traffic signal, $325; 32, no operator's license, $147.50; 14, failed to yield right of way to a vehicle, $262.50; and 7, il legal possession of intoxicat ing liquor, $245. During the month, the fire department ' responded to 70 alarms in the city with 8 alarms reported in the rural district. s Within the city, 11 alarms were in dwellings, 16 were trash or grass fires, 3 car fires, 7 miscellaneous fires, and 26 gasoline spills flushed. The department also stood by once at the airport and one false alarm was reported.
