Easson and Aitkin-Swan col- 1 e c ted infor mation from Cons ultants who had in formed 93 men and 138 women that they had can cer, and had recorded ilh e comments that Al J.S i. Dr. Alvarer inese patients made. Some 153 out of the 231 said right off that they were glad that they had been told the truth. Curiously, 44 stuck their head in the sand, and later denied that anyone had told them they had can cer. Some 17 expressed dis approval, and 17 had nothing to say. ' In Great Britain, people still have the idea that the word cancer means an incur able disease. British doctors have long followed the old idea that they should lie to the patient with cancer, and this fact, of course, influences the opinions of people. Patients Don't Know If doctors always fail to tell people with cancer what they have, then those many who recover and stay well after an operation do not know from personal experi ence that cancer can be cured. In a survey made in Man chester a few years ago, 64 per cent of the people inter viewed said that they didn't think that cancer could be cured. Here in America, I think many people know that if cancer can be gotten at quickly, from 30 to 75 per cent or more can be cured. In talking things over with 231 cancer-bearing patients, the consultants found that 67 per cent' were glad to know what was wrong with them. Some said that since knowing the worst, they felt better and had less fear. What upset many was being sent to' a hospital for treatment that was obviously that for can- 9:00 Flight 930 State Trooper 100 21 Beacon Street 1030 News 1035 Sign Oft MONDAY 10:00 Love of Life 10:45 Guiding Light 11:00 Waiter Cronkite 11:05 Morning Matinee 12:30 as the World Turns 1 :00 For Better or Worse 1 30 B ouse Party 2:00 Bigi'ayoff 230 Ve diet Is Yours 3:00 Brijnter Day 3:15 Seci t Storm 330 Edge of Night 4:00 -Matinee 5:00 Char tain's Corner 5:15 Doug Edwards 530 Flash Gordon 6:00 Weatner 6.05 New 6:15 Doug Edward! 6:30 Name That Tuna 7:00 The Texan 730 Father Knows Best 8 :00 Frontier Justice 830 Joseph Cotton 9:00 Desilu Playhouse 10:00 Paris Precinct 1030 News 1035 Sign Off LOCAL TV HEAD QUARTERS FOR... ' Few Upset There were only 7 per cent who said that they had been upset by being told what they had. A few of these said that they would have preferred be ing lied to. That, of course,, is a very small percentage, and it is made up doubtless of the type of person who always hates to face anything unpleasant. As the authors say, doubt less thisfigure of 7 per cent will fall rapidly as more and more people are told about cancer, and as more and more learn that it is often curable.
