J . rhundjy, July 16, 1959 A Camping Manual of 1926 Offered Tips For Auto Drivers Washington - (UPD - Going camping by car this summer? Really going to rough it? Take a peek at what the outdoorsman put up with in 1926. The American Automobile Association issued an "official camping and campsite man ual" that year offering this advice to the motorist setting out on a camping trip: "Look over your tool box and see that it contains - the necessary wrenches, a spark plug socket, a pair of pliers, also chain repair pliers, a box of extra tire valves, a tire pressure gauge, some extra (park plugs and rim lugs, a roll of tape, a grease gun, extra fan belt, a sheet of cork for emergency gasgets, and a small bottle of shellac." Two Spare Tires Besides the tools, you were advised to carry two spare tires "preferably inflated on the rims," and. three extra tubes. The well-equipped driver also took along a steel rope for towing, a collapsible can vas bucket and a five-gallon canvas water bag. ' For convenience, he also was advised. to have broken curtain lights repaired. The AAA booklet listed these tips for driving to the campsite: "Distribute the weight of all equipment to equalize the strain on the springs . . . use soft water for the radiator- rain water is best. Do not drive in ruts-it wears out the side : walls of the tire casings. Use talcum powder when inserting tubes in cas ings." Then came a section called "other things worth know ing." These included: "To keep the windshield clear of mist on rainy days, rub a sliced onion over the glass with an up and down motion. Be sure to coat the entire surface of the glass with the juice of the onion. When-and if-they got to the camping ground, men were advised to wear overalls. Women, the booklet said, "would find an enveloping apron more than useful.?' Fz Licenses Almost anybody could drive the family buggy on that 1926 trip. . Very few states required Prices Good Thursday, Friday and Saturday! 1 Urge Red Ripe I I ! tv fl 29 I -J Large Green Bell I I L rs fflRlr 1 1!. - I R Large Sunkist 1 BrV FUrai lEHQDS; 111 I . j Full of Juice I I Nice And Ripe I MARGARINE lbs. 9 drivers' licenses for private owners. The states that did demand licenses supplied them free of charge. AH you had to do was apply. Speetl limits in the open country ranged between 15 and 25 miles per hour. Nevada -with almost no paved roads, or, for that matter, cars-had the highest limit: 45. There was one rule in the booklet for happy motoring which still has application to day. This was it: "It takes gas to propel a car-profanity won't do it Milky Way Galaxy Billion Years Old Chicago, Science Service - Most of the stars in the Milky Way galaxy to which the sun and its planets belong were formed in less than a billion years. So concludes Dr. Edwin . Salpeter of Cornell Univer sity, Ithaca, N. Y., from a study of the rate of star for mation in a gallaxy contain ing billions of stars. He as sumed that stars are born at a rate, proportional to the amount of gas in the volume of space containing them. Dr. Salpeter's analysis showed that a large fraction of the material originally present in the Milky Way galaxy was converted into stars in less than a billion years. He also found that the mass of gas now present is decreasing only very slowly with time. White dwarfs, the very dense stars believed to be the final stages of a dying star, make up somewhat less than two percent of the total pres ent number of stars, Dr. Sal peter found. His studies of star formation, are reported in the current Astrophysical Journal, published by the University of Chicago here.
