Hardy Plant I never found out just why it was called "cowslip," ex cept that cows, who show a distinct liking for the leaves, flower and stems of this semi- aquatic plant, would probably do a great deal of slipping and sliding down the bank, of the creek in order to reach the plant. Just about every section of the country where cowslip grows has a popular name for this plant. One very poetic name is marsh - gold. Some folks call it mary-buds, and others, marsh marigold. The golden yellow blossoms are shaped like buttercups. Con fusing the cowslip business somewhat, is the fact that sev eral plants of various kinds are also called cowslips. The plant grows m ditches, swamps, marshes, in the near- shore waters of small ponds, and even in wet meadows or wherever the ground is springy and water-soaked. The cowslip takes advantage of early morning insects by open ing itsblossoms shortly after dawn, offering nectar to all who come, and staying open throughout the entire day. Receives Insects Flies of several varieties, bees of a dozen kinds, and an assortment of butterflies and beetles visit the simple blos som. And in return for the nectar received the -insects carry the pollen and pollinate the cowslip colonies in some distant, wet meadow. The flower stem : is hollow, the leaves round or slightly kidney-shaped and very fresh and green. - The flowerbuds of the cow slip have been used as a . gar nish or in the seasoning of foods. They are slightly simi- Ike Urged to Aid Mining Industry Washington-(DPD-The House Interior Committee has urged President Eisenhower to take immediate steps to increase production and employment in the "critically depressed" mining industry. The committee unanimous ly adopted a resolution stat ing that an emergency exists in the domestic mining-industry which could have " a de pressing effect" on the entire economy. The resolution asked Eisen hower to s advise Congress as soon as possible to actions he takes, and to submit any re organization plans or legisla tion he considers necessary.
