M. - She acts as though I'm stealing him. -'. Lucille R -I have been mar ried four years and I have a 3-year-old son and twin daugh ters of a few months. In order to help me out my mother came to stay with me Tm glad to have her help, for several months. Of course, but things are not working out too well. For one thing, I would like my mother's help with the babies, but she is so attached to my little boy I can hardly get her to give me a hand with the twins. I don't know why Mom has this favoritism for -Charles when the twins are so cute and need so much attention. She has always . liked . boys better, but she should Tea- lize that this attachment isn't good for Charles. He hardly knows I'm his mother any more. He asks his grandma for everything. Even.. if. he wants a glass of water at night he calls for her. Mrsr. E. M. - It's true I'm just crazy about that little boy and that he feels the same about me. He won't let any one but me dress him or help feed him. The trouble with Lucille is that she just, doesn't realize how much I am taking off her hands now. Charles is at the worst stage. If I don't have 4-H Forestry Club Plans Field Day. A Jackson county1 4-H For estry club overnight and field day has been, scheduled for Sturgis creek Thursday and Friday, according to Glenn Klein, county 4-H agent. Each club will provide for its own cooking. Club mem bers will have a chance to participate in water boiling, fire building and extinguish ing, fire spotting, . tree and shrub treasure hunt and pac ing contests. All members will be helped also with iden tification. Thursday evening a campfire will feature skits or some type of entertain ment from all club members. The schedule is-leave home at. 1 ..p.m., ,. .-Thursday .take part in a special hike, set up camp for. the night. The over night will be completed by 2:30 p.m. Friday so all mem bers . can reach home early. Interested clubs may obtain a may and information from the county extension office in the county courthouse. If I stopped watch ing him to help out with the twins, Lucille would run her self .ragged. I would like to take Charles to my home for a couple of weeks during the summer. The country air would be good for him and I'd like to show him off to my friends and neighbors. But when I sug gested this, Lucille blew up. I think that she is jealous of his attachment to me and she doesn't realize how silly this it. She acts as though I'm stealing him. The Council: We thing that Lucille is, .indeed, jealous of her son's attachment to Grandma and we don't think it's bo very silly. The idea that she could be "stealing" this child sounds ridiculous to Mrs. E. M., but it is , not very far from the truth. Even when children are extremely fond of their grandparents, they usually prefer to be closer to their parents. This little boy must have felt very much left out in the cold when , his two baby sis ters arrived. He needed re assurance' that his mother still belonged to him. Prob ably his mother was too busy to give him enough reassur ance. Then along came Grandma - ready to devote herself to him alone. Eventually he was able to substitute her in his feelings for his mother. And Grandma, who may have been at a loss with her children grown and married, found a new. little boy. It is true that Grandma is now of enormous help in this household, but -her relation ship with Charles is distorted and harmful to everyone con cerned. Eventually Grandma will have, to go her own way and pick up her own life again and the break will be very hard. Her idea of taking Charles to her own -home is an indication of how much she would like to have him all to herself. f Lucille must now make an effort to win back her son. If she cannot get her mother's help with the twins she should try to get some outside help. (Copyright 1959, General Features Corp.) D. F. Huson, City Recorder ...mS 1 KUner WaJxer nazain, president oi tne in stitute, sounds the following warning: Hurts Investment Property "Inflation is not good, and particularly for investment property, it is not good. Rents will always lag behind ex penses, and, in an inflation ary period, we should expect to get a higher yield on our investments, and not a lower yield. "It is a fallacy for invest ors in income producing pro perty to think that they will be able to pay back heavy debt in the future because of the possible increase, of the property or of the diminution in the value of the dollar. . "You still have to have the dollars to pay back the debt, and I don't know how you can manufacture dollars for that purpose in apartment houses or office buildings: " "On the contrary, there is a constant struggle going on today in the case, of . prime properties to protect future in come against the ravages of inflation. " "With a dearth of good in vestment property, high pric es and low yields, there is no valid reason to urge non-professional small , investors to participate in ownerships at lower than reasonable re turns." Real Estate Already Hit There are many indications that inflation already has hit real estate, the publication points out. THE SHORT. HAPPY LIFE OF A WORM Above him, a foot or so overhead on the earth's sur face, a warm spring rain pat tered on the ground. Along the entire length of his body he felt the vibration of every individual raindrop. He re acted in a typical earthworm manner - he began to move. He wasn't thinking, he had nothing to think with. Neither did he have the slightest con cept of the passing of time. Time means nothing to him. He lives in the dark earth. There is.no night or day. He is little more than an animat ed tube of living tissue; digest ing food, reacting to outside stimuli, activated only by in herited impulses from mil lions of generations of earth worms who have lived. In the complex plan of Nature he and all his fellows are a force; tiny cogs in the complicated machinery of living things. Uncomfortable Along the entire length of his body he felt the cool com forting moisture, but as more water ran' in, saturating the ground, the earthworm . be came uncomfortable. He be gan, to crawl upward against the downpouring water. Grav ity pulled against him. Per haps this, force, the one. he contended with constantly, forced him to try to crawl away from it or upward to ward the earth's surface. The force of the incoming water helped gravity, both pushing against him. ; ; ATTENTION! YOUNG MEN! Watkins Instinct must be a force, more' powerful than either of the others, for he fought them both. He was not conscious of the increasingly heavy rain above him until the burrow was water-filled and he be came short of oxygen. ' .. In his sensitive tissues, without conscious thought or plan, he felt the urge of self- preservation triggered by the lack of air. He hurried, crawl ing frantically. He emerged from the earth into the up per air. The pounding rain pummeled his naked body. He squirmed in discomfort. This, was a strange and hostile en vironment. Even without eyes he sensed the painfulness of the light. Sense of Danger He had no eyes to see the robin that was hopping across the wet grass toward him. He had no ears to hear but he possessed a sense of danger. He reacted violently in the only way he knew. He at tempted to escape by crawl ing back into the water-filled burrow. But he was too late, or too slow. The robin stepped forward, its head cocked; the bill darted out, grabbing the soft worm-body. The worm was lifted from the wet, friendly earth, then threaded down- the bird's throat, where a chemical change-over enabled the robin to receive nourishment and stimulation . continuing Na ture's design for living things.
