(Face Wdgbs IMh Bon a Sow; E)H)(i3geirs7 nainifts EacCi Lose United Press International They call him the "Baron of the Bullpen" or the "Man With the Golden Arm," and come this winter they even may be calling little Elroy . Face the most valuable player - in the National League. ; The pint-sized Pittsburg re lief ace turned in his 14th straight victory of the season " without a loss Sunday when -' the Pirates beat the Cardinals, 6-5, in a 10-inning opener and was out there on the mound , again protecting a 5-4 lead in the nightcap when the game . was suspended in the ninth inning due to Pennsylvania's r Sunday curfew. Face's 14 consecutive vic tories constitute the longest major league winning streak . in 12 years and he now is only five shy of the all-time record of 19 in a row during a single season set by Rube Marquard of the Giants in 1912. Dating back to May 30, 1958, Face is unbeaten in 19 straight games. Roberto Clement's single with the bases full in the 10th inning produced the Pitts- S burgh victory in the opener. Face was rushed into the breach again in the ninth inning of the nightcap after : Gino Cimoli homered to cut ' the Pirates' lead to 5-4. He struck out pinch-hitter George Crowe just before the game was suspended. It will be com pleted Aug. 19. San Francisco Loses Milwaukee defeated San Francisco, 4-2, but the Giants still stayed a game in front when Cincinnati beat second place Los Angeles, 4-3. Chi cago won the opener of a double-header from Philadel phia, 7-6, then lost the night cap, 4-1. In the American League, the second -place White Sox moved to within a game of first place by taking a pair from the Athletics, 5-3 and 9-7; Detroit defeated Cleve land in the opener, 6-2, but the Indians won the nightcap, &4; the Red Sox handed the Yankees their fourth straight loss, 7-3; and Baltimore licked Washington, 5-1. Lew Burdette pitched a seven - hitter against the Giants in notching his 12th victory and moving the third place Braves within IVi games of the top. Eddie Mathews lined his 26th homer with two on off Jack Sanford in the third inning for Mil waukee's margin of victory. Jackie Brandt hit a two-run homer for San Francisco. Gus Bell's ninth-inning sin gle scored Johnny Temple with the Reds' winning run against the Dodgers. Home runs by Vada Pinson, Ed Bailey and Frank Robinson gave Cincinnati its first three runs. Bob Purkey won his eighth game, giving up five hits, including a homer by Gil Hodges. Rookie Larry Sherry was the loser. Cubs Win Opener The Cubs won their opener from the Phils with a seven run rally in the fourth inning that chased loser Reuben Go mez. Earl Averill's three-run homer was the key blow and provided the victory for ex- - American leaguer Art Cecca- relli. Joe Lonnett and Ed Bouchee homered for the Phils. Bouchee hit his second horn' er of the day in a four-run first inning that clinched the nightcap for Philadelphia. Ray Semproch stopped the Cubs on five hits for his third victory. Moe Drabowsky suf fered his seventh loss. Rookie Jim McCanany hit triples with the bases loaded in each game to pace the White Sox to their sweep over the A's. McCanany, who hit .400 with Colorado Springs. Colo., last year, capped a five- run rally in the first inning of the opener and produced three yruns in a four-run fifth inning that won the nightcap. Ray Moore and Bob Shaw were the winners and Bud Daley and Rip Coleman the losers. Indians Win Nightcap . Rocky Colavito drove in four runs with his 27th and 28th home runs to help the Indians to their nightcap win over the Tigers, who won the opener on Paul Foytack's six hit pitching. Minnie Minoso also homered in the nightcap as reliever Jim Perry held the Tigers scoreless over the last 6 1-3 innings to gain his . fourth victory." Detroit won the opener with a four-run rally in the fourth inning at the expense of rookie Larry Locke. Foytack gave lip only six hits in posting, his .eighth victory. Harvey Kuenn .and Jim Baxes hit homers. ; Jackie Jensen drove in four runs with his 19th homer and a pair of doubles against the Yankees to pace the Red Sox to their sixth victory in seven games under new Manager Billy Jurges. The loss, their eighth successive one on a Sunday, dropped the Yankees under the .500 mark again, even games off the pace. Re liever Bill Monbouquetta was the winner and Ralph Terry the loser. Knuckle -baUer Hoyt Wil helm of the Orioles finally nailed down his 10th victory with a four-hitter oyer the Senators after he had failed six times to get his 10th.
