Eagle Point-Kenneth Van
nice has been appointed to
the Eagle Point High School
faculty as an athletic coach
and physical education in
structor. He will be head coach in
baseball and wrestling and
assistant in football, replacing
Gail Schoppert who resigned
to take a post teaching Army
dependents in France.
Vannice is a 1949 graduate
of Halsey High school. He at
tended Oregon State college,
where he played baseball,
from 1949 through 1951 and
.Willamette University from
1951 through 1953. The past
three summers he has been
taking courses at Oregon
State. The Eagle-Point post
will be his first teaching job.
Most recently Vannice has
been a research laboratory
technician at Albany. He has
worked also as . a produce
manager and shipping clerk.
He is the son of H. K. Van
nice, who assumes a position
at Culver for the new school
after serving as school super
intendent at Prospect. A
brother of the new Eagle
Point coach,' Don Vannice,
was a Southern Oregon col
lege basketball varsity play
er during the past hoop sea

They told talkative Dick
Stuart to put his muscles
where his mouth was and

great delight of Pittsburgh's
suddenly-awakened Pirates.
Stuart talked a blue streak
when he first came up with
the Pirates two years ago. He
talked about the 66 homers he
hit at Lincoln, Neb., about
how maybe Babe Ruth's rec
ord was in jeopardy and about
the possibility of his earning
more than $100,000 in a single
season.
Starting To Show
He talked so much, in fact,
that some claimed he had
been vaccinated with a phon
ograph needle. Anyway, ev
eryone said let's see him do
it up here.
And now Big Stu is starting
to show 'em.- He smacked his
17th homer with two, on in
tne iitn inmng triaay nignt
to ' climax a four-run rally
that gave the Pirates a 7-6
triumph over the -Cubs and
their fifth straight victory.
Stuart collected three of
Pittsburgh's 10 hits and 25,
360 fans at Forbes Field paid
him a tremendous ovation as
he circled the bases in the
bottom of the 11th to wipe out
a three-run rally in the top
of the frame by thi Cubs. He
hit his homer off loser Don
Elston and the blow gave
Bennie Daniels his fifth vic
tory of the season.

Ruth Morris, Ashland, ac
complished an angling feat
Thursday evening when she
caught a rainbow trout re
ported to be the largest taken
from Lake of the Woods since
the lake was rehabilitated in
1955. She brought in the six
pound, 23-inch fish on a No.
14 hook and 1-pound test
leader. Mrs. Morris was still
fishing with a single egg in
deep waters on the west side
of the lake. It took about 25
minutes to bring the fish into
the boat. Fishing was report
ed spotty Thursday and Mrs.
Morris was the only lucky
angler in her boat. She was
fishing wiljh her husband, H.
R. Morris, Lee Hobbs, Med
ford and. Tom Neeley,, one
of the resort owners" at. "the
lake.

Free Passes Help
Medford outhit the Whiters
11 to nine on Friday by the
Veterans Administration domiciliary-backed
club had a
nine .to one edge in free
passes to the bases. -
Jack Turk headed the
Whiter batting parade. He
had three hits in five times
up and tripled home three
counters. Bill Weddle had
two hits including a double
and Wayne Allen tripled also
for the home nine. Gordon
Owsley, Bob Serak, Ed Raink
ing and Ron Peery each had
two hits for Medford. Ray
Anderson drove in two runs
with a three-bagger. Kaye
Vaughn also had a three-base
blast for the Bowlers.
Don Sanford was the win
ning pitcher but had help
after giving up three straight
hits and a run in the ninth
inning. Jack Brown came to
the hill and the side retired
on two strikeouts and a force
out. Sanford fanned four in
his 11 hitter. His only free
pass camewhen he hit a bat
ter on a fourth-ball pitch.
Reinking started on the
bill for Medford and was
charged with five of the Camp
White runs and the loss. Ei3
yielded three hits, struck out
three and walked five. First
reliever Dennis Barr was re
sponsible for the other five
tallies, giving . up six hits,
walking four and whiffing
the same, number. Vaughn
took over for Barr in the
seventh inning, fanning three
and yielding on base on balls.
Allen Swipes Home
Camp White, put over two
runs in the first canto on two
errors, ';a sacrifice flyout by
Don Wendt, a groundout and
two stolen bases. Allen swip
ed home. Four runs in the
fourth panel were on singles
by Turk, Wendt and Weddle,
a triple by Allen, a base on
ball,,-a wild - pitch and an
error. Four others were in
the seventh on the double by
Weddle, three-baser by Turk
and singles by George Ice and
Sanford along with three
walks.
Safeties by Reinking and
Peery and an error followed
by Anderson's triple gained
three Medford runs in the
sixth inning. Fuz McCays
throw from center field after
a fly ball catch caught Ander
son at the plate for a double
play that ended the bid.
Vaughn's three master and
hits also by Peery and Larry
Perkins, plus an error, got
two, markers in the eighth
and singles by Owsley,-' Sefak
and Reinking produced the
single tally in the, ninth.

school's ace hurdler Steve
Pauly's national prep record
clocking in the' 120-yard high
hurdles. " -
Pauly skipped over the
high sticks in a time of 13.8
at the state high school track
meet in Corvallis last spring
to set the mark.
The new national record
betters ..the previous one by
one-tenth of a second.

Harry Scarff died here Friday
following an operation for an
ulcer at Osteopathic hospital.
He taught physical educa
tion and, was assistant foot
ball, track, and basketball.
Last football season, he suf
fered an uleer attack.
Scarff, a Douglas faculty
member for three years, had
coached at Central Catholic
for 11 years and at Roosevelt
high for two years. He was a
native of Del Norte, Colo.
Kansas City, Mo. -(CPD-Whitey
Herzog, suffering
from a badly bruised right
thigh, has been placed on the
disabled list by the Kansas
City Athletics. The As filled
the vacant spot by recalling
outfielder Russ Snyder from
Portland of the Pacific Coast

For Junior Tournament

the history of the competition
are anticipated Monday and
Tuesday, July 20 and 21,
when the Southern Oregon
Junior, Golf championships ar

Gold Cup
Inglewood, Calif.-(UPB-Hills-dale,
shuffled back to fourth
place going into the stretch,
closed with an amazing burst
of speed Saturday to capture
the $162,100 Hollywood gold
cup by about a length.
The game Indiana-bred
colt's display of determina
tion and doggedness in the
stretch drew prolonged ap
plause from the crowd of
more than 43,000 fans after
Hillsdale again defeated Find
and Terrang despite his bad
racing luck.
There were few in the big
crowd that would have given
a - -n i c k 1 e . f or Hillsdale's
chances as the field of .eight
came off the final turn and
into the stretch in the final
furlong of the mile and
quarter race.
But Jockey Tommy Barrow
and Hillsdale refused to be
beaten as they came from be
tween horses, has" to weave
their way forward and still
ran aown tne leader inside
the final sixteenth to win.
The finish was reminiscent
of last Saturday's $50,000
American handicap when
Hillsdale beat Find in the
strefch. But this time it; was
a tougher job and the colt
still got it done.
As the 2-5 favorite of the
big crowd, .Hillsdale returned
$2.80, $2.20 and $2.20" across
the board. Find returned $2.80
and $2.20 to place and show
and Terrang paid $2.60 "for
show. '
Turns in Good Race
Hillsdale was timed in
1:59 15 for the mile and a
quarter and the way he won
as well as the time ended
any question about the colt's
ability to go a route. For
that was the only doubt in
the minds of turf experts as
they appraised his perform
ances. There had never been any
question of his courage or his
ability to handle weight or
come from behind. But he was
beaten by Terrang in the
Santa Anita handicap at the
mile and a quarter distance
and when he won the Santa
Anita maturity over the same
route he was staggering at
the finish.
As owner C. W. Smith led
his blocky colt, into the Win
ner's circle to receive the
gold cup trophy the crowd
renewed its applause and
cheers. For racing fans rare
ly see a horse get into trou
ble such as Hillsdale en
countered and then overcome
it to win going away.
Veteran jockey Johnny
Longden took over the mount
on Terrang and he sent that
six-year-old in an effort to
steal the race. Terrang held
the lead all the way from the
first few yards to the stretch
under Longden's expert front
running tactics..
In the early stages of the
race Day Court and Find
joined with Hillsdale in
jockeying for position behind
Terrang. But down the back
stretch and nearing the final
turn Hillsdale had his head
in second position.
Going around the turn,
however, first Find and then
Day Court came around Hills
dale and it appeared that the
western handicap champion
would suffer his first defeat
in five starts at the meeting.
That was until Hillsdale's
rider went to work driving
out of the blockade and at the
lead.
. And the way Hillsdale re
sponded drew gasps of amaze
ment from the throng. First
he had to get out of the blind
switch at the eighth pole and
then he -had to run down Find j
and Terrang which were
under the whip trying to fight
it out for first money. But
Hillsdale kept gaining ' as
Barrow lashed with his whip i
and drove on relentlessly. He
caught Find about 20 or 30
yards from the wire.
Portland Feminine fans of
the Portland Beavers will be
given a real break on Monday
night, July 13, when the Beav
ers return to play the Seattle
Rainiers at Multnomah Sta
dium. On ' this night ladies
may have any seat in the
grandstands, except box seats,
for 50c. '

divisions. Thirty-six holes are
scheduled with 18 each day.
Entrants will compete without
handicap.
Trophies will be offered for
first, second and third low
gross in boys' divisions and
first and second low in girls'

Salem, Hood River, Eugene
and Klamath Falls, as well as
Medford and Ashland are ex
pected to have entries. A
strong pee wee delegation is
foreseen from Salem.
Four of last year's cham
pions reportedly will be in
the tournament this year.
They and the divisions they
won last year are Mike Mon
roe, Medford, boys; Larry Ba
bica, Eureka, pee wees; Pam
Stacey, Medford, girls, and
Treasure Sullivan, Ashland,
. junior girls.
Friday, July 17, is entry

Dodgers In
Pennant
Drive Yet
Milwaukee (UPD - The Los
Angeles Dodgers, helped by
home runs from Don Demet
er and Charles Neal, kept
their big pennant drive for
the season hot Saturday by
beating the Milwaukee
Braves, 7-5.
- A five - run fourth inning,
in which Neal led off with a
homer and Demeter later
homered with Gil Hodges on
base, was the leading blow
in' the Dodger win, their fifth
straight and 18th in the last
25 games
The win, credited to relief
pitcher Don Drysdale, en
abled the Dodgers to keep
pace with league-leading San
Francisco, which also won.
It was also the second straight
win over the Braves, whom
the Dodgers knocked out of
first place and into third.
Get Victory
Drysdale, coming back af
ter starting Friday night in a
game washed out after two
innings, relieved Dodgers'
starter Sandy Koufax to start
the Milwaukee fourth. He re
ceived victory No. 10 against
six losses.
While touched for Henry
Aaron's solo homer - his 23rd
in .the seventh and another
Milwaukee run in the fourth,
Drysdale stayed in front of
a 12-hit attack by his team
mates. Besides his homer,
Neal had a double and two
singles and Duke Snider and
Maury Wills also had doubles
for the Dodgers.
Carl Willey started for the
Braves and was the victim
of the five-run fourth inning.
After Neal led off with his
11th homer in the fourth, Sni
der doubled with one man
out and Hodges singled him
across. Then Dementer con
nected for his 17th home run
to score the third and fourth
runs in the inning. Wills'
double followed, and the
Dodger shortstop crossed the
plate when Milwaukee left
fielder Mel Roach misjudged
pinch-hitter Drysdale'i fly
ball for an error.

his bludgeon last week end,
retained his batting leader
ship in the Rogue Valley
league in games played
through July 5.
He has a .563 swatting aver
age. Statistics based on a mini
mum of 10 times at bat show
Ray Munyon, Glendale, and
Ron Peery, Medford, sharing
second place in the hitting
race with even .500 marks.
Phil Sword, Ashland, second
after June 28 games, is now
fourth with .467. Bob Serak,
Medford, is in fifth position
with .462.
Munyon, McAbee Tied
Munyon and McAbee are
tied in total hits with 10 each
while Ken Ayers, Riddle, and
Ron Maurer, Ashland, lead
in runs with nine each. Sword
kept his position as runs bat
ted in leadership with nine.
Mickey Coen, Riddle, is still
far ahead in the pitching race
with five victories and no
losses.

the lake before the deadline.
All of those who have regis
tered by Friday may practice
that day at the lake.
Variety of Contests
The meet will have divis
ions for both experienced and
novice skiers. There will be
rivalry in the slalom, trick
riding, 'jumping and speed
skiing. Men's, veteran men's,
women's and junior class ri
valry is anticipated.
Next week end's tourna
ment will be the third in as
many summers at Gardener
lake under sanction of the
American Water Ski associ
ation. The lake is a reservoir
privately - owned py ' the Ar
thur Gardener familv and is
about one-half-miles in diam
eter. It is naturally sheltered
by hills and considered ideal
for competition. Almost any
spot around the lake provides
a good view point. The lake
is in the Yankee creek district
about 16 miles by road from
Medford. -
In the slalom a skier enters
a starting gate, rounds six
buoys and leaves the course
through another gate. If the
run is successful, a return
trip is made and the round
trip has a possible of 16
points. For each trip through
the course tow boat speed is
boosted two miles per hour.

Jumps are made over a
board 12 feet wide and 24 feet
long with about 20 feet pro
truding from the water.
Judges score on ijprm.
Trick riders are Judged on
skill and number trick during
a pass through a course and
tricks have different values,
according to their difficulty.
Cliff McGinty, ski club sec
retary, said that early file of
entries would be appreciated
in order to give the club an
idea of the number of par
ticipants. He said that the en
try fee does not include the
price of the Saturday banquet.
An earlier report that it did
was incorrect, he pointed out.

Jorgenson
Sets Pace
In Softball
Portland - Alice Jorgenson,
manager of the Seattle Ram
blers, took over the batting
lead in the Northwest Wom
en's Major Softball league this
week. She replaces another
manager, Shirley Topley- of
Vancouver, B.C., who dropped
to second.
Jorgenson upped her aver
age to .385 on 15 hits in 39
times at bat. Topley toppled
into a three way tie for sec
ond place with Betty Mantyla
of Salem and Nina Edwards
of Eugene, all with a .333 per
centage.
Only two league series were
on tap this weekend. Erv
Lind Florists, undefeated in
league play this summer, are
at Seattle meeting the Ram
biers, while Eugene's McCul-
loch . Cham Saw is having a
two game series at Vancouver,
B.C.

lead, meets cellarile Lake
view. A double bill is tenta
tively set with the first
game at 1:30 p.m. to count
in the standings. Today's
action will be the first this
season between the two
clubs.
Medford coach John Ko
venz said he will likely call
on Herb Wheeler to pitch
the first game. If the sec
ond mix is played, depend
ing on the length of the
counting game, Koveni may
use several chuckers to give
them experience.
CP, Medford Shared
The Medford club, going
into week end play, 'has
shared the loop lead with
Central Point, each with
4-1 records. Central Point
met Lakeview last night, at
least temporarily erasing
the tie.

next Wednesday night
could just about settle the
title issue. However, Med-.
ford has a game billed with
Lakeview on Saturday
night. July 18, while Cen
tral Point is billed at Klam
ath Falls the following day.
Grants Pass and Klamath
Falls play today in other
circuit contention. GP is out
of the race but Klamath it
just a half-game behind the
leaders. v
Kovens has . received in
formation that, play-offs
among divisions in the area
are to start next week end
with the north champ to
meet the south winner on
the south field. However,
the south's remaining
league games and the pos
sibility 4f a tie. complicate
the picture.
