Koz lov wound up a three-day sampling of life in the mid- western "United States today with a visit to the Interna tional Trade Fair. Fair officials said they hoped a tour of the exhibits, contining products from all parts of the world, would be an eye-opener for the Russian official. ine trade lair s motto is "World peace through world trade." Richard Revnes, man aging director of the fair, said fair officials wanted Kozlov "to see the interchange of ex perience and ideas which his creating better understanding among nations. Heads for Pittsburgh Kozlov and his' party were to leave by plane for .Pitts burgh after spending 30 or 45 minutes viewing the two miles of exhibits. Georgia Prisoners Due Scanty Diet Because of Strike , Reidsville, Ga. - (UPD - A state prison hunger strike by inmates who demanded fried eggs for breakfast was broken up today when 225 ring lead ers were hauled off, in hand cuffs to other prison camps. State Corrections Director John M. Forrester said the men responsible for the dem onstration would be placed on bread and water. "I think this has cracked it," Forrester said. "We've got the ring leaders and after they were removed you could hear a pin drop." Strike Expected The inmates of the huge state prison began their hun ger strike Thursday but prison authorities had been expect ing it for almost two weeks 'and were ready to move in .swiftly to put it down. I Forrester said the men will be dispersed among 16 other state institutions and 85 coun ty work camps. They will get bread and water diets except for one full meal every five days. A "hard-core" of 140 prison ers went to the rock quarry prison for incorrigibles at Bu ford, where in recent years numbers of inmates have slashed their heel tendons to avoid the hard labor. Started Thursday j The hunger strike started Thursday at breakfast and some 1,000 inmates, mostly white, had joined the hunger strike at supper time ' Thurs day night. The prison has 2,696 inmates. Forrester said Warden P. R. Balkcom this morning told the men personally that those who wanted to eat to proceed into the dining areas. All but 225 answered the warden's call. 'Copter Crashes On Klamath Lake Klamath Falls - (UPD - An Air Force helicopter with Col. Jack W. Williams, command ing officer of Kingsley Field, aboard, crashed on the shore of Upper Klamath Lake about noon Thursday. None of the five occupants aboard was injured, except for scratches- The Air Force said the 'copter was on a routine flight to inspect the recreation area being developed on the lake for Air Force personnel. The 'copter did not burn. Personnel aboard were Col. Williams, co-pilot; 1st Lt. Michael Langford, pilot; Maj. William ; Hicks, Maj. John Scarboro, and Maj. Eugene Hollway. ' , Board of Appeals Positions Filled Salem (UPD Gov. Mark Hatfield has filled the ap pointments to the three-member Board of Appeals for the newly created Department of Employment, his office said today. Named to the appeals board were Sam Fletcher, general manager of Continental Bak ing company, and attorneys Ben Anderson and Mrs. Metta Baughman. All three are from Portland. The Department of Employ ment was created by the 1959 legislature as the successor to the State Unemployment Com pensation' Commission. FEED BILLS New York (UPD - Agriculture Department economists found it costs about $11.50 a week to feed a 16-year-old boy, as against $4.50 for a three-year-old child and $8.50 for a 75-year-old man. Food costs run about 33 per cent more for a 16-year-old boy than for a girl of the same age. Three Escape Hurts As Boat Explodes Winchester Bay, Ore - (UPD -Three persons escaped injury Thursday when the cabin cruiser "Hokay" exploded about 50 feet from the Coast Guard station here. The Coast Guard extin guished the fire on the 21 foot craft. Damage was esti mated at $1,000. Rescued were the co-owners, Palmer O. King and George W. Drury, and the skipper, Nelson Hall, all of Coburg. The Coast Guard said the explosion occurred when a fuel line broke THE 'AVERAGE' SHAVER New York - (UPD - The av erage man shaves once a day, in the morning, in front of the bathroom mirror, before cleaning his teeth combing his hair or taking his shower. He wears his pajamas and shaves his right cheek first and his neck last. Anyway, that's what the North American Philips Co. found during - a recent survey among new pur-, chasers of its electric razor. The survey also showed that the average shave lasts two to six minutes and that most men use this time either listening to the radio or TV-br doing what they described as "nothing." San Quentin, Calif. - (UPD - Convict-author Caryl Chess man, who has lived in ' the shadow of the gas chamber for 11 years, said today he wanted no compromise in his fight for freedom - "I go to hell or Hollywood." "Hollywood" in Chessman's case is Los Angeles where he was sentenced to death June 25, 1948, as the infamous "red light bandit" who pre tended he was a policeman to terrorize lover's larfe couples. He was convicted of 17 counts of kidnap, rape and robbery. Wants. New Trial He wants to go back to Los Angeles for a new trial. He insists that, while he may have been a habitual criminal, he was not the red light ban dit. "Now there is no, com promise," the 38-year-old con vict with the 136 IQ said in an interview. "I'm too old to serve more time in prison, going to the CAKE BATTERED WIFE ' Appleton, Wis. - (UPD - Wil liam Van Linn, 23, sentenced to two years' probation, for beating his wife, told the court he did it because she wouldn't bake him a cake. "Bakery cakes aren't as good as my wife's homemade ones," he said. More than 292,000 Ameri can lives were lost during the four years of World -War II, but during the same four-year period, more than 2,317,000 Americans died of heart and blood vessel diseases. This :week the California Supreme Court rejected the latest Chessman appeal. In a maximum of 60 days the Los Angeles court that originally sentenced him to death will set a new date for execution. Meanwhile, Chessman is preparing a petition for a re hearing by the state Supreme Court. He is frankly skeptical of his chances there. ' "My only hope lies in ap peals to the federal courts, especially the U.S.' Supreme Court where they can be de cided on the merits of the case, not on legends favorable or unfavorable," he said. i APPENDECTOMIES CUT New. SOUTH OF THE BORDER New York (UPD - Mexican fishermen docked a record shrimp catch of 31,400 metric tons last year, 26 per cent more than in the previous rec ord year of 1956, according to the Mexican Bureau of Fish eries.
