Hicks Predicts Moyer Victory Seattle - (UPD - "Schoolboy" Bobby Hicks, Pacific North west lightweight champion who picked Ingemar Johans son to knock out Floyd Patter son within five rounds, Thurs day predicted Denny Moyer would win the welterweight championship of the world. Moyer, 19, unbeaten in 20 fights, meets 147-pound title holder Don Jordan in Port land tonight. Hicks prediction gave some support to Grays Harbor area promoter Danny Quintoli, who last week said he would guarantee Moyer $25,000 to defend the title against Hicks should the Portland youngster defeat Jordan. Olciedo and MacKay, who bowed m an early round dur- ing the recent Wimbledon championships, fell again in the semi-final round of mens doubles in the Baastad inter national tennis tournament Thursday when they lost to the Swedish team of Sven Da vidson and Torsten Johansson, 1-6, 15-13, 9-7, 6-3. The match required two hours ana 40 minutes but the Swedes gained the upper hand when they finally took the marathon second set after six times reaching set point in the 28th game. MacKay, off his game here after going to the men's ingles semi-finals at Wimbledon once again was erratic. Olmedo, obviously cruising easily to save his energy on one of the hottest days of the year here, won his men's sin gles quarter-final Thursday over 19-year-old Thomas Hall- berg of Sweden, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1. Beverly Fleitz of Long Beach, Calif., and Joan John son of Los Angeles' both ad vanced to the semi-final round in women's singles. Court Appeal Yet Hangs Over Chavez Ravine Los Angeles-(DPI) -The Los Angeles Dodgers, just percent age points out of first place in the National league, ap peared today to be just about the same distance from their proposed new home in Chavez ravine. The latest developments in the long-playing dispute over the ravine: -One of two attorneys seek ing to appeal the Chavez ra vine case to the United States Supreme Court gave up his legal move because of fi nances. -The city advertised for bids for two million dollars worth of grading work on the revine with bids to be opened July 22. - - The only obstacle left in the' Dodger Chavez ravine plans is Attorney Phill Silver, who said he intended to press his appeal to the U. S. high court even though fellow bar rister Julius Ruben dropped his appeal attempt. Back All Way The committee to save Chavez ravine said it would back Silver all the way. Silver has filed notice of ap peal with the high court. The California Supreme 'Court has twice upheld, by unanimous rulings, the con tract which turns 315 acres over to the Dodgers for the park. The land in the ravine originally was condemned to make way for a housing proj ect. If the high court allows Silver's appeal to be heard, the status of the park would be clouded until their final decision -. which could take months. But with the new develop ments, the Dodgers are mak ing plans to move into a 50,- 000 seat' stadium by next year. ' , CARTOON NICKNAME Minneapolis - (UPD - Minne sota owesf it "Gopher State" nickname to a bitter news paper cartoon published in 1857 in opposition to a rail road bond issue passed by the state legislature, according to historian Charles Flandrau. In the cartoon, gophers were used to depict supporters of the bond as well as what were identified as "bribed sen ators." Flandrau says Minne sota kiddingly started refer ring to one another as "go phers" and the name stuck. Ever since the days of Ger trude Ederle, first woman to conquer the frigid, treacher ous waters of the French-English bathtub, long distance swimming has been tabbed as a sure route to obscurity. It's a far piece to fame and splash ing sprinters such as Esther Williams, Johnny Weissmuller and Buster Crabbe did a quick crawl into the Holly wood swim. Greta, the naturalized cute from Copenhagen, figures she can find fame and fortune right in the water and with out benefit of cameras by be coming the first person to swim the English Channel both ways non-stop. Mickey Cohen Visits Champion Portland -(DPD Mickey Co hen, Los Angeles underworld figure, caused a stir in Port land police circles last night by arriving with two compan ions to see tonight's welter weight championship fight. Cohen and his attorney, Norman Sugarman, and a third man, Phil Packard, ap parently Cohen's bodyguard, left their hotel shortly after midnight and police said they visied the motel quarters 'of Welterweight champion Don Jordan. Cohen and .Sugarman entered the motel, but Jor dan's manager, Don Nesseth, reportedly ordered them out after a few minutes. Cohen told police he came here to see Jordan defend his title against Portland's Denny Moyer; and to transact some legal business. Police Chief William Hul brunner was called out of bed last night when his men learned Cohen had arrived. He ordered intelligence offi cers to interview the little ex convict and keep an eye on him while he was in town. Co hen said .he would return to California Saturday. Cohen's visit recalled earlier unconfirmed reports that plainclothes detectives had been assigned to Jordan's camp as protection against possible mobster attempts to cut in on his title. Last summer she became the first person to swim both ways across the Catalina Channel which, like tne Eng lish Channel, is about 21 miles wide. The difference is that the tides are worse and the water is much more frigid in the English Channel. Method for Beating Cold "I've figured out how to beat the cold," she smiles. "I'll do the latter stages of my training in my native Copenhagen, and after tne water there the English Chan nel will seem like a warm bath." The water-soaked Greta, who spends seven hours daily in training, has cut out quite a' chore for herself. Complet ing one-half of the channel swim, she must take seven steps by herself. But before starting her return swim, she must stay in water up to her knees and cannot remain there more than a half hour. If you wonder why people attempt these types of chores, take into consideration that Greta has been earning from $15,000 to $20,000 annually since turning professional three years ago. This loot is obtained through such med iums as prize money, lectures, teaching, testimonials and per forming in aquades. A food supplement firm will sponsor her "double crossing" attempt and it's quite a proj ect. Her retinue will include some 40 people including the crews of the two boats which will accompany her, five or six pacers who will be in and out of the water to keep her on' schedule and her husky husband, John. This time he won't need the rifle he uses in warmer waters to protect her from man-eating sharks who make no differentiation between the sexes. Eyes Naples-Capri Prizes Before she makes her two way attempt in August, Greta will compete in the Naples Capri marathon event, as a tuneup and has eyes on a two way prize, both the first place money to the winner and the top women's prize. While she has the looks to invade the movies, the hazel eyed Greta can credit a knee cyst to her marathon swim ming successes.. Now 30, she was a compara tively late starter as a swim mer. The special Centennial year celebration opera was written by John De Merchant, New York baritone. De Mer chant has directed several productions in La Grande. Romantic leads for the pro duction will be Patsy Hutch inson" and Howard Anderson. Miss Hutchinson is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Hutchinson of Union. Anderson is a professor at Eastern Oregon college in La Grande. Other solo parts will be sung by Evadne Kelsoe and Dave Skeen. She had collected enough silverware, anyhow, with a collection of 35 Copen hagen titles, 24 Danish cham pionships, eight Scandinavian wins and four European cham pionships. 'They are very difficult to eat," she says prettily. "This is, harder work but I enjoy it. And if I am able to swim the English Channel both ways non-stop I will be able to write my own ticket throughout the world." That she will. But one won ders why she'll need a ticket. Why not just swim? Stockade Visitors Now Total 8,487 Visitors at the Siskiyou summit stockade numbered 8,487 as of last night, offi cials there report. Among per sons who have signed in re cently are visitors from Ari zona, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, ana .Newport News, Va. . Mr., and Mrs. Paul F. Ceder of Miami, Ore., entered Ore gon last night and told stock ade personnel that they ex pect to spend four months in the state. They hope to visit historical sites and Centennial events, look at the scenery, and 'do some gold panning. MAIL TRIBUNE, Mcdford, Or. 1 1 Friday, July 10, 1959 11 Spray Plane Crash Fatal To Pilot Adrian, Ore. - (UPD - A crop spraying plane - crashed and burned in a beet field between here and Nyssa today, killing the Nampa, Idaho pilot. The victim was James Dyer, 34, an employee of Clark's Elying Service at Nampa. Police Chief E. L. Hanson of Nyssa reported the acci dent at 6:22 a.m. He said both the pilot and plane were burn ed. Dyer's body was taken to the Lienkamper F u n e ral home at Nyssa. Dyer was spraying insecti cide on a beet field on the Le land Montgomery ranch when his Piper PA18A crashed.
