V HILTS Club Visits Ranch on River By MRS. M. F. CAVIN The local Community club traveled to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Evan Maupin at the Rogers Rogue River ranch on the Crater Lake highway on June 25. A potluck dinner was aerved. Guests were Mrs. Harry DeJarnett and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Barrett, Talent; Mrs. Jack Clark, Medford; and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ay ris, Central Point, all former Hilts residents and members of the club. Ladies making the trip were Mrs. Fred Haynes, Mrs. Art Blanchard, Mrs. M. G. King, Mrs. Ozzie Bernheisel, Mrs. Frank draves, Mrs. Walt Adams, Mrs. Ernest Spannaus and Mrs. Ethel White of Horn brook. Canasta and pinochle were played with high score going to Mrs. DeJarnett and low to Mrs. Haynes in pino chle and high to Mrs. White and low to Mrs. Ayris in ca nasta. Mr. and Mrs. James Cain and four children have re turned home after a two week's vacation visiting with relatives in several Califor nia cities. In Arvin they were guests of Mrs. Cain's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Omar Miller, and visited in Selma, Calif., with Mrs. Edith Ginn and in Herndon with Mrs. Imogene Bruce and sons. Both women are Mrs. Cain's aunts. After returning home the Cain fam ily, accompanied by Miss Dorothy Cain, Medford, drove to Crater lake. On Tuesday they visited in Central Point at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Krupp and family. June 24 the birthday of Mrs. M. M. Seif was celebrat ed with a party held at her .home. Mrs. Seif, known to the children of the community as "Gram," was surprised by five-year-old Sharon Vieira, a neighbor girl, who sang "Hap py Birthday" to her. Jimmie Gibson whose home is on Dead Indian rd. ' re turned to his home last week after spending a week at the home of the Bob Fergusons. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Middle ton visited Wednesday eve ning in Yreka at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Sherman and family. ' Mr. and Mrs. Bill Gilberg, Salem, called at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Don Ward and family on Sundayi Gilberg is a former resident and he and Mrs. Gilberg came south to attend the reunion of the class gradauting in 1939 from Yreka High school, held re cently at the Yreka Inn. Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Booth, Central Point, spent several days at the home of their son-in-law and daughcer, Mr. and Mrs. Italo Marin and family. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Earle, Sacramento, visited this week end at the home of Mrs. Earle's parents. Shelley Bernheisel, Weed, visited last week at the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ozzie Bernheisel. She also visited at the home of her father, Mr. and Mrs. Nor man Bernheisel in Horse creek. Recent guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Tal lis and sons were Mrs. Tallis' father, Albert Severson, from Clarkston, Wash., her aunt, Mrs. Mayme Halliday, from Tacoma, Wash., and her cou sin, Claude Blair of Vancou ver, Wash. Mr. and Mrs. Johnny De Avilla and son Steven, moved last week end to Ashland to make their home. De Avilla is employed with Lininger Sand and Gravel. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fergu son and children were guests at a barbecue dinner given Saturday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Cook, Ashland, honoring the birth day of Charles Cook. Other guests were Mrs. Charles Cook, Ashland; Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Gibson and son Jimmie, Dead Indian area and Mr. and Mrs. ' Hank Smith and two girls of Ash land. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Dye left for their home in Eloy, Ariz., Sunday after spending two weeks at the home of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Roland Rainwater and family. They were - ac companied by the Rainwater family as far as Mt. Shasta where both families had a pic nic dinner. Saturday Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Rainwater,. Grants Pass, and L. C. Rainwater, Riddle, Ore., spent the day at the Rainwater home. June 26 the Junior class of the Hilts Community Bible Sunday school had a wiener roast at the home of their teacher Mrs. Harry Burns at the SS Bar ranch. ' ' HORNBROOK Home From By KATHERINE CHAPMAN Mrs. Curtis Peters, who was injured in an automobile accident in Hornbrook June 26, was released from the Sis kiyou General Hospital, Yreka, last week. She is re ported to be convalescing at were played. Class members attending were Sherrie and Shirley -Staley, Paula East man, Karen Watson, Janet Cavin, Carolyn Preston and Danny Burns. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Span naus and Mr. and Mrs. Cal Sharp spent the week end camping out at Shasta lake and to search for Indian arti facts. They were joined on Saturday by Mr. and Mrs. Harold - McFerrin , and son Terry. Mrs. H. G. Thompson and daughter Marilyn returned home last week after spend ing the past week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles' Hoyt and daughter. Mrs. Don Ward attended a World Book sales meeting held at the home of Mrs. F. C. Thomspon, Talent, on Thurs day. - Visitors recently at the Bernheisel home were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bernheisel and Nye Bernheisel, all Med ford. Mr. and Mrs. Jere Brooks and son of Vallejo, were week end guests of Mr. and Mrs M. M. Seif. A daughter of Mrs. Peters, Linda, 10, was killed in the accident. New grandchildren were ad ded to the rosters of two Hornbrook families over the week end. Arriving on Sun day, June 28, at the Siskiyou General hospital in Yreka, was a girl, their second child to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sand ers, (Caroline Sylva) of Yrekal She is the eighth grandchild of Mr. and Mrs. John Sylya, but the first grandaughter. At Riverside, Calif., also on June 28, a second son and third child was born to Mr, and Mrs. Jerry Schulte. Mrs, Schulte is the former Dorothy Cummins, and with the ar rival of her baby, Mr. and Mrs. Rob Cummins become grandparents for the fifth time. Mr. and Mrs. Loren Cum mins and children, j.oren Howard and Jennifer, accom panied by Mr. and Mrs. Laur an Paine and son, Lornie, of Ft. Jones, left June 30 for a pack trip into the Marble mountains. They planned to pitch camp in the Tangle Blue area, and to remain for a week. Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Eichorn of Los Angeles were here re cently to visit their daughter and her family, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Cross and three children. The Con- leys are from Sacramento and were here to attend the 20th anniversary dinner and dance of .his graduating clas from Yreka High school. The Daily Vacation Bible school held at the Hornbrook Bible church the last two weeks in June closed with a program the night of June 26. The average daily attend ance of the classes was . 28 As a follow-up to the school, Mrs. Norman Martin will hold childrens' Bible classes each Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at the 'Faith chapel. The Woman's Society of the Methodist Church held then last regular meeting of the summer on June 26 at the home of the treasurer, Mrs, Aroon .Burns, flans were completed for the group to hold a picnic July 23 at Lithia park in Ashland. A social meeting will be held Aug. 13 at the home "of Mrs. Loren Cummins, and regular ses sions will resume on the sec ond Thursday in September, Mrs. Jess Cummins enter tained members of St. John's Altar society at a luncheon at her home on Cottonwood creek on June 26. During the afternoon,! the group present ed a wedding gift to one of their members, Mrs. Clarence Lockwood, a recent bride. Present at the luncheon were the honored guest, Mrs. Lock wood, her mother, Mrs. Law rence Lemos, Mrs. Edward Smith, Mrs. Florent Van De Weghe, Mrs. Agnes Clark, Mrs. D. F. Metzen, and Mrs. John Sylva. Overnight visitors June 26 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arden Burns were their daughter, Mrs. Charles Dilley and son Peter, and Mrs. Milo Dilley and daughter Betty, all of Redding, Calif. Those from Hornbeck at tending the Miss Siskiyou Pa geant and dance at the Yreka Inn on June 26 were W. A. Rutledge and daughter, Mary Lee, Mrs. A. L. King, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Chapman, Erwin Bear, and Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Walsh, whose daughter, Miss Sharee Walsh, was one of the contentants. Miss Walsh, who is assistant city clerk of Yre ka, - was sponsored by the Yreka Chamber of Commerce. Master Sergeant and Mrs. E. R. Burtner and children Russ, Kathy, Carol, Roger, and Ann, left July 1 for their home at Mountain Home, Idaho, after a week's visit here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Chapman. On June 26, the Burtners' were luncheon guests in Med ford of her sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. Herb Dungey and children Mary Pat, Chris topher, and Jane Ann. Satur day evening, Mr. and Mrs. Burtner attended the 20th an niversary dinner and dance of her Yreka High school gradu ating class, held at the Yreka Inn.: Accompanying them was Mrs. Marge Snyder, Medford. A delayed Father's Day ob servance was held at the Dun gey's on Sunday, where the Burtners and Chapmans were joined by a son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Fick of Conyonville, Ore. An afternoon of reminiscing was held Monday when a group of friends of Mrs. Burtners from high school and Methodist Youth Fellowship days, gath ered at the Chapman home. In the group were Mrs. Stan ley Balfrey of Yreka, Mrs. Loren Cummins, Mrs. D. F. Metzen, Mrs. W. A. Rutledge, and Mrs. Burtner's sister, Mrs. Herb Dungey and three chil dren of Medford. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bear entertained informally at their home Saturday evening hon oring their son, Pvt. Leonard Bear, who left Sunday to drive his new base at Ft. Belr voir, Va. Friends of Leonard's who saw him off were Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Spearin, Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Spearin Jr. and children, Donna, Darlene and Billy. Mr. and Mrs. Matt Johnson, and her son, Jim Hamilton, Johnny Slyva, Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Walsh, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Chapman, and the Misses Sharee Walsh, Lillian brother, Erwin. Arriving at the Frank Bear home Monday for a week's vacation were a daughter and her family, Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Baker, and son of Salem. Jim Hamilton, son of Mrs. Matt Johnson, left June 28, for a visit in Eugene, Ore. The previous Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. Allan Shaw and .two children, of Eugene, were guests of the Matt Johnson home. ' ' Mr. and Mrs. Ray Blanken ship and . children, Linda, Bunny Sue, and Mike are in Sacramento until July 6 They went south to attend the fu neral of Blankenship's brother-in-law, Thomas Mills, for merly of Hilts. Mr. and Mrs. George Smith and son Jackie left July 2 fox Castro Valley, Calif., to bring their ether son, Rusty, home. Rusty has been visiting his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Norville Hanke, for the past month. Pvt. Glenn Goodwin spent several days leave from Ft. Ord with his grandmother. Mrs. Priscilla Augsburger, this week end. Gary Ramos of San Jose, Calif., is here for the summer with friends, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cardoza and children, Frankie and Jeannie. Spending four days here recently with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Goerge Grieb, were Mr. and Mrs. Jack Smith and daughter, Debbie. The Smiths are from Bradley, Calif., in Monterey county. Drop-in visitors recently at the George Grieb home were friends, Mr. and Mrs. Henry ver Muellen of Modesto, Cal ifornia. Mrs. Jack Williamson of Napa, Calif., arrived July 1 to spend several days with her uncle and his family, Mr. and Mrs. Ike Dooley and four sons. Several friends and neigh bors drove to Jennie creek on Father's Day for a swim nartv and wiener roast. In the party were Mr. and Mrs. Ramh Chadwick and three children, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Mearriber, Mr. and Mrs. Pete Fisher and children, Mr. and Mrs. Ike Dooley and children, and Mr. and Mrs. Romaine Ward and family. The Wednesdav mornine coffee club met July 1 at the home of Mrs. Ralph Chad wick. Present were Mrs. Har- ley Baker, Mrs. M. E. Selby, Mrs. E.' E. Tuesday, July 7, 1959 Mrs. Wayne Cummins left at midnight Saturday for San Francisco to be with her fath er, Charles Spearin.
