CENTRAL POINT Family Gathering Held By DORIS HUGHES Central Point-Seventy-five relatives and friends of the Gilbert Brood family of Cen tral Point gathered for a pic nic at Hawthorne park in Medio rd on Sunday, June 21. Besides the many valley folk who attended the gath ering, there were Mrs. Henry Harvey, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Harvey and son Wesley, Mr. Bill Harvey and Mrs. A. Sor ley, all from South Dakota; Mrs. Rosa Travis of Anderson, Calif.; Mrs. Joyce Douglas and daughter, Mary Lou, and Mrs. Ed James and daughters, Viki and Lynda, of Springfield; Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Brockley and daughter, Margaret, of Coquille; Mr. Will Wilson, Mrs. Ada Hoffman and Mrs. Delia Green from Grants Pass; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Shadely and Mrs. . Shadely of Sprague River; Miss Janice Schatz of Klamath Falls and Mr. and Mrs. Dick Smith of Eureka. Mr. and Mrs. John Deuel and daughter, Sharon, sold their home on Pine st. and left Central Point last week for an extended visit in England. Mrs. Deuel's parents and her sister live at Newbury, Eng land. It has been three and a half years since Mrs. Deuel had visited her family. Mrs. Bill Langston gave a party June 11 for her son, Da vid, who was celebrating his fourth birthday. Games were played and refreshments serv ed. Attending were Dianna McCoy, Sharon Deuel, Janet and Gary Snook, Brian and Susan McCoy, Donnie Matej ka, David and Debbie Sax bury, Charles and Danny Mar tin and Mike and David Lang ston. On the evening of June 11, David Langston's grandpar ents, Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Lang ston, gave a garden party honoring David on his birth day. Guests were David's oth er grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Russel Peebles of Grants Pass, Jim and Larry Peebles of Grants Pass, and David's great aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Peebles of Med ford. Also attending the party were David's brother, Mike, and their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Langston. The Central Point city hall posted notices for a public hearing July 7, prior to call ing for bids for paving on South Second st. Plans and specifications are approved by the city council. Paving of approaches to North Second and Cherry sts. . were com pleted last week. The Central Point city hall will be closed July 3, 4 and 5 by order of city council. State Fire Marshal William Robles of Grants Pass was in Central Point to meet with city .officials last week. He made an inspection of Crater High school property and ad ditions to Huffine's nursing home and McCue's nursing home. Members of the Central Point Volunteer fire depart ment have been occupied the last three weeks with the task of burning grass from vacant lots. Mr. and Mrs. Stan Snyder and children, Stanley and Linda, are spending the month of June vacationing in Ten nessee. They plan to return to Central Point July 7. Guests arriving at the Gil bert Brood home June 19 were Mrs. Henry Harvey, her son, Billie Harvey, and an other son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Harvey and Wesley and Mrs. A. Sor ley all from Wood, S. and Mrs. Rosa Travis of Anderson, Calif. Mrs. . Gilbert Brood, Mrs. Henry Harvey and Mrs. Rosa Travis are all sisters, The women also visited with their brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. A. O. Wal ker, and another sister-in-law, Mrs. Clayton Walker, of Med ford. The visitors took trips to the House of Mystery and the Old Oregon museum on Sar dine creek near Gold Hill and to Delmar Smith's Crater Rock museum just north of Central Point. They returned home June 22. Cheryl Hendrickson, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hendrickson of Gold Hill, is visiting at the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. D. R. Hendrickson of Central Point. Miss Sharon Kelley, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Kel ley, left Saturday to visit her sister in Pendleton, Ore. Miss Connie Mitchell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mercell Mitchell, left here Sunday to visit her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Mitchell, of Kent, Wash. Guests recently in the home of Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Harvey of Hamrick rd. were Mrs. Harvey's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Young, of Panama City Beach, Fla., and her brother and family, Mr. and Mrs. Rhett M. Young, and Martha Ann and Brenda, also from Florida. The Harveys took their guests to view the redwood trees on the coast and on a trip to Crater lake. Also ar riving to visit with Tom Har vey of Medford and with the family at the Harvey home in Central Point were Mr. and Mrs. George Silliam of Oakland, Calif., and their son, Kenneth Silliam, who is sta tioned with the Coast Guard in Eureka. Tom Harvey is the father of Mrs. Silliam and T. W. Har vey. The two families went on a camping trip to Fish lake and to Four Mile lake. Mrs. Silliam is the former Verdean Harvey. She attended the Medford High school class of '29 reunion which was held June 21. . David Turvey arrived last Wednesday from Kansas City for a surprise visit at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Turvey, of Geb hard rd. Also visiting at the Turvey home last week end were their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Morrison, and Donald, Linda, Michael, Eddie Jr., and Jeff- ery from Eugene. Machinist Mate Third Class, Dick Rainey visited last week end at the home of his parents Mr. and Mrs. George Rainey, Rainey had just returned to Moffett Field from an eight month's cruise to Japan, For mosa and the Philippine is lands. Upon returning to Cen tral Point, Rainey learned that another Central Point man, LeRoy Gillaspey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Gillispey, was on the same cruise. Gil laspey, who is on a 30-day leave will return to San Diego and will go from there on a cruise to New Zealand and Australia. Wayne Lawton spent Mon day visiting at the home of his aunt, Mrs. George Rainey, of Central Point. Moving to Central Point recently from Gold Hill were Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Dickerson. According to Central Point city hall records, an office building will be constructed on Fourth st., opposite the Post Office. The pumice block building is being constructed by Harold Shaw of Central Point. Dr. Max Flowers, an osteopathic physician and sur geon, from Fort Worth, Texas, will move into the new office Sept. 1. Tom Phelps, salesman with the Bill Colley Real Estate of fice, handled the transaction for the office and the family's home on Pine st., which is being constructed by Bob Jantzer and Jim La Viea. ' Leaving Monday after a five day visit at the home of Mr, and Mrs. G. F. Brood of Geb hard rd., were their two daughters and' children from Springfield, Ore. The visitors were Mrs. Joyce (Opal Mae) Douglas and daughter, Mary Lou and Mrs. Ed (Mary Rose) James and daughters, Viki and Lynda. Friday evening, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Gillaspey of Lin den lane were hosts at a wein- er roast in honor of Mrs. Joyce Douglas and daughter and Mrs. Ed James and daugh ter. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. G. F. Brood, Mr. and Mrs. William Wilson and Becky and Janice of Medford, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Brood and two daughters, Marjorie and Nadine, of Medford and, LeRoy, Jackie, Donnie and Ronnie Gillaspey of Central Point. On Saturday evening this same group were entertained with a barbecue supper at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Wilson of Medford. Mr. and Mrs. John Black ford of Central Point visited a few days recently in Davis, Calif., at the home of Mrs. Blackford's son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Don Morgan and daughter, Cynthia Anne. They attended the graduation exercises at the university there on the evening of June 9. Morgan received his doc tor's degree in veterinary medicine. He graduated with 50 students from the veter inary school of medicine. Mrs. Blackford said that about 500 students graduated from the university that night. Also there to attend his graduation exercises were his brother, Carl Morgan and family Zrom Seiad, Calif., and "his father, Merle Morgan, also from Seiad. Dr. Morgan re ceived a position ' with the school as an ambulatory in structor. He will teach a class two half days each week. While on a tour of the large animal hospital, Mrs. Black ford noticed with interest sev eral race horses which were brought for treatment from the Santa Anita race tracks. The Morgans returned to Cen tral Point with the Blackf ords and after visiting a few days with Mrs. Morgan, and Cyn- VERY CLOSE CALL Mrs. Patricia Steinmetz feeds her 17-months-old baby, John, at International Airport, N.Y., after the baby's head and ear were grazed by a bullet in the customs building. Police believe the bullet came from an accidentally discharged firearm, in someone's bag being opened for inspection. No gun was found. thia Anne returned home. Morgan went to Portland and to Boise where he took Ore gon and Idaho state board examinations. Sgt. Adrain D. VanHorn Jr., U. S. Army Advisory G.P., Korea, was recently awarded a commendation ribbon with metal pendant for his service as chief clerk of the Awards and Decoration and Investiga tions and Board Units, Adju tant General Section, at KMAG Hq. Sgt. VanHorn's wife and son, Scott, are living in . Cen tral 'Point at the home of Mrs. VanHorn's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl vonBuskirk, while VanHorn is overseas. VanHorn is well known in Central Point, having been active in sports at Crater High school. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. A. D. VanHorn of 154 Fourth St., Central Point. Dinner guests Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ray mond Brood of Medford were Mr. and Mrs. G. F: Brood of Central Point, Mrs. Joyce Douglas and Mary Lou, and Mrs. Ed James and . Viki and Linda, all of Springfield. Mrs. LaVern Cimfl of Med ford and Mrs. Vern Cimfl of Glendale were both injured in a car accident near Susan- ville, Calif., four days ago. They returned to Central Point last night after Mrs. La Vern Cimfl was released from the hospital at Susanvilie. She suffered from shock, bruises and a fractured wrist. Mrs Vern Cimfl received cuts and bruises in the accident. Both families were just beginning a two-week's vacation. Mr. and Mrs. Victor Van Hoy, Edith and Earl, of Cen tral Point, and Mrs. VanHoy's mother, Mrs. Edith Osburn of Rogue River, went to Port land to attend the Oregon In ternational Trade fair and to see the Rose festival. Mrs. Osburn then returned to her home in Rogue River but the VanHoys, in celebra tion of Oregon's Centennial, took a sight-seeing tour cov ering most of the state of Ore gon. Mrs. Bert Cook was li brarian at the Central Point library during Mrs. VanHoy's absence. Mrs. Albert Lewis and chil dren, Danny and Tamara, gi Sacramento, were guests last week end at the home of Mrs. Lewis' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl von Buskirk, her broth er, Brian, and her sister and nephew, Mrs. Adrain Van Horn Jr., and son, Scott, all of Central Point. This was the first time the Lewis family had seen the baby, Scott, who was born Feb. 14. ' Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Bian coni of Sams Valley, Mr. and Mrs. Don Relling of Medford and Mr. and Mrs. John Black ford of Central Point returned the first part of the week from a vacation on the coast. Mr. and Mrs. James Smith and son, Larry, returned last week from a three-week vaca tion. The Smiths went from here to Bend, and then on to Caldwell, Idaho, to visit their daughter, Mrs. Wanda Clark son. They visited Smith's brother and family, the Leroy Smiths, and with other relatives in Arkansas and New Mexico. The Rev. and Mrs. Douglas Field and children, Judy, Wayne, Kathy and Gary, of Lacomb, Ore., were here last week end to visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Adding ton of Central Point. The Rev. Field is Mrs. Addington's son. Field has accepted the pastor ship of the Baptist church at Union and the family will be moving soon to that city. INFLATION, THE THIEF New York - IUPD - The aver age U.S. production worker's gross weekly salary increased from just under $54 in 1948 to about $83 last year, the Tax Foundation reports. But the Foundation notes that infla tion, which it says has been encouraged by Federal gov ernment deficit spending, has nibbled away at almost every advance.
