Newspaper Page TextJACKSONVILLE City Off ices Combined By BETTE HOSKINS Graham announced last week that the positions of city recorder and treasurer have been combined and that city recorder Mrs. Jean Hewlett will hold both oftices with daily hours from Tuesday through Friday from 2 pjn. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays between 8 a.m. and noon at the city fire hall. The change is effective July 1. The city council ex pressed appreciation to Mrs. Ray Coleman for her many years of devoted service as city treasurer. Water bills will be payable at the fire hall office at the hours men tioned, with the Drug Store no longer a collection point after July 1. Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Sullivan and son, Jerry, of Old Stage road will leave this week end to attend the Centennial Ex position and visit relatives in Portland and spend the re mainder of the week visiting along the Oregon coast at Seaside and Newport. - .... SP- State Forest Closures Ordered Salem -(DPD The State For estry department has ordered into effect the first closures of state forests for the sum mer effective July 1. j Ted, Maul, forest protection assistant, said the closures in volve four state forest areas in Klamath county where an entry permit would be re quired. Maul said the closures were routine as forest areas dried out in the summer. Most forest areas will be open at least-through July 4, Maul said. Through June 15, a total of 89 fires were reported on state lands. The blazes cov ered 740 acres including 400 acres of forest land in the Ap plegate country of Southern Oregon. Oldtime Minstrel Show Is Scheduled Springfield "Springfield-or-Bust" is the title given an oldtime minstrel show being produced by a little theater group, the Williamalane play ers. Evening performances will be on stage July 17 and 18 in Springfield during its Oregon Broiler Festival, Mrs. Ted Jorgensen, minstrel show producer said. - ' Mrs. Jorgensen said that the company will give a per formance also in Eugene un der sponsorship of the Eugene Centennial committee July 24. Portlander State Fair Chairman Salem - (DPD - Ursel Narver of Portland has been elected chairman of the Oregon State Fair Commission, succeeding Lee Eyerly, who resigned for reasons of health. Narver was appointed to the commission by former Gov. Robert D. Holmes two years ago and is the only hold over member of the board. The commission voted 'to raise gate admission from 50 to 75 cents from 8 a.m. to 6 pjn. to compensate for a drop of $30,000 in sales of exhibi tion space caused by the com petition of Portland's Centen nial Exposition. Trumpeter Louis Armstrong was scheduled to appear dur ing the last four days of the fair, but fair officials said an other star may have to be found because of Armstrong's current illness in Italy.
