BEDKOOM & Family Room o 2 Car Garage Safety Awards Are Presented to Five Forest Districts Safety awards were pre sented to five districts of the Rogue River National forest Tuesday at the beginning of the fire control school, ac cording to S. T. (Tenny) Moore, fire control officer of the Rogue River National for est. districts receiving safety awards for no loss time acci dents during the year were Union Creek, Prospect, Ap plegate, Butte Falls and Ash land. The forest service road crew also received a safety award. Union Creek received an award for not having any loss time accidents among personnel for five years, Moore said." Length of service awards were presented Harold Thom as, Ashland district ranger, 20 years' service; Harold Howard, radio technician, 10 years' service; and Frank Mc Dowell, crew member,- 10 years' service. Main Part of School One of the main parts of the three-day fire-control school program was fire suppression using dry suppression meth ods and use of fire-fighting tools. Approximately 40 fires were set at Camp. No. 2 near of Butte Falls to teach 80 trainees, Moore said. A fire trail was dug around the fire, then crews used shovels and other hand tools to clear away smouldering brush and smoth er the fire with dirt. Fire detection training was coordinated with the fire sup pression class. Eighteen look outs were taught how to use fire-finders. Smok Chasing The 26 firemen and crew members were also instructed in "smoke-chasing"-tracking down and location of small fires such as those caused by lightning strikes. Use of compass and pacing to discover the small fires was also taught to the . 18 lookouts undergoing the train ing, Moore said. All but three of the 17 look outs in the Rogue River Na tional forest have been manned, Moore said. Officers Elected To Agency Council Officers were elected at a recent meeting of the Jack son County Inter -Agency Council held at Camp White. A tour of the VA . domiciliary there was also made. Mrs. Helen A. Wilson of the Red Cross was elected presideht; Darl Gleed of the Boy Scouts was named vice president; and Miss Marilou Garner of Jackson County 4-H clubs was elected secretary. The council was organized in 1955 to serve as a clearing house for mutual problems of various agencies, to expedite action and eliminate duplica tion of effort. Participating agencies in clude those already mentioned and also the Camp Fire Girls, Girl Scouts, home economist extension, agricultural exten sion, Jackson County Health department, juvenile office, welfare commission, child welfare," Jackson County Tu berculosis and Health associ ation, Medford city schools, the Medford Ministerial asso ciation, Oregon state employ ment service, Salvation Army, sheriff's office, rural schools, Southern Oregon college, So cial Security administration, veterans service office, Veter ans administration, United Medford Crusade, and the YMCA. SENTENCE PARALYTIC Nashville, Tenn.-(UPD-Leroy H. Jones, lying in a wheel chair paralyzed from wounds inflicted by his step-son, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison; for the slay ing of his wife. Jones, a Negro who pleaded guilty, was shot in the back by his step-son, Eugene Watkins, 25, about 12 hours after Jones allegedly killed his wife, Annie Lou. OME o Living Room o Birch Cabinets Many Other Features APPLEGATE VALLEY Claim Location Noted By MAUDE ZIEGLER Applegate Valley - A num ber have expressed interest in the exact location of the Earl Gebhart mining proper ty where Jackson county pro poses a recreation site. The claim is one mile south of McKee bridge on the west side of the highway south of Beaver creek, according to Ralph James, county com missioner. The Corson-Buck irrigation dam borders on the property. Residents in the area say a large river swimming hole on the property accommodates occupants of about 25 cars every week end. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert De Voss and Mrs. Claud Wil liams of Sterling have return ed from a three-day trip to San Francisco, where they visited Gordon Williams, son of Mr. and Mrs. Williams, who is in the Navy. Al Williams and sister, Mrs. Edna Starbuck, have arrived from Houston, Tex., and will spend several months at Wil liams' summer home here. Mr. and Mrs. Norman Sut tell left Tuesday for their home in Seattle, after being guests at the home of their son, Ranger, and Mrs. Neil Suttell. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Scott and son, Douglas, returned Tuesday to their home in Redlands, Calif., after spend ing a few days with Mrs. Scott's sister, Mrs. George Redhead. More than 70 students were registered at Ruch Commun ity church for Daily Vacation Bible ' school which opened Monday and closed Friday. The young peoples' class was held in the evening, and oth er youngsters met during the forenoon. The classes will nresent . a . program at . 8 o'clock tonight. Mrs. S. D. Herbert and Mrs. Ruth Grove of Farming ton, Calif., were recent guests of Mrs. Herbert's daughter, Mrs. Robert Sorber. They wereen route to Alaska for a three-week vacation, after which they expect to attend the Centennial exposition in Portland. The Rev. Thomas McCam ant, pastor of the Medford are??;- mm- Congregational church, and noted bird authority, visited the Medford YMCA day camp near McKee bridge recently, giving the boys a talk on birds of this area. A group of local women spending Wednesday in Ash land as guests of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ditsworth were Mrs. Harry Helms, Mrs. Ger ald Buck, and Mrs. Ed Fin ley. They were accompanied by Mrs. Verna Culy of Jack sonville. The occasion was Mrs. Helms' birthday, and a dinner in her honor was giv en at Mrs. Ditsworth's. The group also visited Mrs. Ben Dawson of Ashland. Thomas Robbins, assistant curator of Jepson herbarium at University of California in Berkeley, and his mother, Mrs. Pearl Robbins of Oak land, Calif., were dinner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Pearson recent ly. Robbins collected some of the rare plants of this area. The visitors were en route to the Portland Centennial ex position. Other guests at the Pearson home recently were Dr. and Mrs. Raymond Smith of Medford. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Rush ton and daughter, Virginia, of Fresno, Calif., were over night guests recently at the home of Mrs. Rushton's aunt, Mrs. Nellie Rose. The family, en route to Coos Bay, caught their limit of fish on Middle Fork. Mr. and Mrs. E.- A. Dean, recently of Los AngeleSj were guests a few days ago of Dean's aunt, Mrs. E. E. June 28, 1959 a9 Man Threatens to Blow Up Union Hall A man identified as Joe Desmond, about 50, Wednes day, threatened to blow up the Medford Labor Temple, 24 Vi South Grape st., because, he said, others were being of fered jobs ahead of him, Med ford police reported. , Police were informed of the incident by Charles Walk er Crary, 2060 Andover dr., business manager of Electri cal Workers Union Local 659 here, who reported the man made the threat to his office girl, Donnis Fay Misek, 1309 Mt. Pitt ave. "I'll blow this place up and I have the stuff to do it with," Mrs. Misek quoted the man as saying. ' She said he had come into the office to ask for a job and, when told none were avail able, said, "You're not telling me the truth because I sen several fellows with work slips when I was downtown, and I was ahead of them."
