L 30 betters Signed To Contend In Rogue Valley Tournament A field of some 30 players will contend Saturday and Sunday in th men's, women's and junior men's divisions of the Rogue Valley Invitational Tennis tournament at Ash land. The tourney with entries from California and several Oregon communities is the second on a four-tournament southern Oregon-n orthern California circuit. It will be conducted n the Southern Oregon college courts. Rogue Valley Tennis club Is sponsor. Matches will get underway at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday's activity will be gin at 8 a.m.1 Twenty-two entrants are listed for men's singles and the same number for men's doubles. Six players will vie In junior men's singles and three in women's singles. Just two mixed doubles teams will take part. Public Welcome r The public is invited to watch the matches. There will be no charge for admission. A division for . boys 15 years of age and under got underway this afternoon. In the first round -of men's singles matches included Alex Petersen, Ashland, vs. Merle Deets, Ashland; Norm Froh wein, Medford, vs.- Don Gor don, Medford; Don Auxier, Medford, vs. Duane Fitzsim mons, Klamath Falls; Joe Corona, Gold Hill, vs.. Bruce Merrill, Grants Pass; Dick Joy, Ashland, vs. Larry Ottis, Grants Pass, and Bob Gouley, Ashland, vs. Jerry Jennings, Klamath Falls. Going into action in the second round will be Phil Holman, John Root, Tod Tib butt, and Jerry Kalapus, Medford; Denny. Todd and Earl Brooks, Klamath Falls; Don Megale, Corvalis; Bud McCoy, Sacramento; Jim JacQBon, Portland, and Jerry Joy, Ashland. Doubles Matches First doubles matches will be Dr. Alva Graham and Deets, Ashland, vs. Jennings and Fitzsimmons; Frohwein and Lawrence Gastorf, Ash land, vs. Pete Smith and Scott Foster, Corvallis; Gor don Taylor and Auxier, Med ford vs. Tom Renchler and Pragner, Medford. Also in, doubles will be Jackson and McCoy, Petersen and Root, Megale and Todd, Corona and Kalapus and Dick and Jerry Joy. Gertie Brooks, Klamath Falls, will play' Jan Newman, Northwest NCAA Golf Entries Out Eugene-fUPD-The final two Northwest entries in the NCAA Golf Tournament here were eliminated Thursday. Gary Hval of Oregon lost a third-round match to War ren H Simmons of Syracuse, l-up, although he was two strokes under par. Simmons later lost a quarter-final match, 2 and 1, to Ted Weiss of Yale. Seattle's Ed Pearsall was eliminated in the third round by Jack Luceti of San Jose State, 2 and 1. Luceti later upset Del Beman of Mary land, 3 and 2, to enter the semi-finals. Eugene, Ore.-(UPD-Limping Bob Moser of Georgia takes on San Jose state's Jack Lu ceti today while Houston's Dick Crawford meets Ted Weiss of Yale in the 36 hole semifinal round of the NCAA golf championships. Moser, a polio victim as an infant, upset Walker Cup star Ward Wetlauffer Thursday. The 6-3, 160-pounder, was two down to Wetlauffer after eight holes, buf he grabbed the next three holes and won 1 up. : Luceti, a 21-year-old who enters dental school next year, putted flawlessly as he played one under par golf while defeating Del Beman of Maryland, 3 and 2. FIRST BASEBALL GAME Tokyo-(DPD -Emperor Hiro hito and Empress Nagako of Japan saw their first profes sional baseball game Thurs day when, they attended a game between the Tokyo Giants and the Hanshin Tig ers. A crowd of 45,000 saw the Giants win, 5-4. Gold Hill, in the first wom en's singles tiff with the win ner, to ' face, Kay O'Bryon, Redding, Calif., in the final. The mixed doubles will have Jackson and O'Bryon against McCoy and Gertie Brooks. Smith will play Fitzsim mons and LeRoy Harmon, Ashland, will take on Foster in the first junior singles. Mixed doubles finals, Sunday. 4 p.m. 104 Enroll In Tennis Instruction A total of 104 boys and girls are enrolled in the Med ford School districts tennis classes, instructor Robert Huff has reported. There are seven classes four for girls and three for boys. Huff, with the assistance of Glen Schireman of the city recreation program, is con ducting the instruction from 7 ajn. to noon Monday through Friday. Five classes are held at the senior high courts and two at McLoughlin Junior high. Today wraps up the first week of a five-weeks tennis slate. Fundamentals have been the matter of attention and will be applied starting next week in games and sets in round robin play in the class es. A tournament is planned in the last week of the school. Games will be in the second half of the league schedule. Rogue Valley wound up its first time around last week end against Vancouver, B.C. Salem met American Linen of Portland Wednesday in its first half concluder. Score of the game was not available this morning. Split Before The Maids and the Sham rocks split when they met at the end of May in Salem. Next non-league action for the Maids will be on Tuesday at Klamath Falls where they will have their fourth game of the season with the Basin ettes. Rogue Valley has won two of the three games played. The Dairy Maid are an ticipating two special events in July. On the 17th, as 1958 state champs, they will meet American Linen in a benefit fray at Normandale park in Portland. On the 30th they will meet the world champion Raybestos Brakettes of Strat ford, Conn., in a Centennial Softball Feature at Memorial stadium here. The Lind Flor ists will play the Braketts in the other half of the twinbill. Pat Barron, Maids' pitcher, is still out of action with torn knee ligament injuries suffer ed earlier this month. Coach Shy Callaghan is hopeful she will be ready for the July 4-5 series against Vancouver here. Good Competition Seen For Local Drag Racers Stern challenge to local en-1 tries from speedsters in Cali fornia and elsewhere in Ore gon is anticipated Sunday when the Southern Oregon Timing association puts on its second, drag race program of the season. . The Wheelers Zombie is expected to have a rival in the competitive coupe running in Roy Dunn, Areata, Calif. Dunn drives a Chevrolet-powered Crosley. He lost to the Zombie last week and is re ported looking forward to a return engagement. Races will be at the SOTA strip in west ,Camp White. Time trials are to start at 9 a.m. with eliminations set for after lunch. Redding, Calif., probably will be well-represented at the meet, SOTA officials said. Dragster entries will set their sights on bettering the 144.46 miles per hour track record. A $75 bond will go to the car and driver beating this mark. White's Cycle center has put up a $25 bond on the B cycle standard of 100.55. Dean, a regular first baseman, is big and strong and with the Black Tornado having considerable infield depth it will be a big boost in the defense of the District 6 title if he shows he can take a turn on the mound.
