Newspaper Page TextAssociate Minister At 1st Methodist The Rev. Robert F. Dowrey Is new associate minister at First Methodist church. He recently came to the Oregon conference from the Indiana conference. Mr. Dowrey was born in Lowell, Mass., and was grad uated from Tufts college in Medford, Mass. He did gradu ate work at Boston univer- city prior to spending two years as a medical laboratory technician with the U. S Army at Walter Reed hospi tal, Washington, D. C. He also served part of his military service in Germany. , He attended the University cf Chicago seminary from which he was graduated June 12. ; While at seminary Mr. Dow rey served as assistant pastor in the Hyde Park Baptist church, Chicago, and during the summer he served in a Congregational church in Challis, Idaho, and Sheridan, Wyo. i The past year he was an as sociate minister at Embury Methodist church, Chicago, and one summer was student chaplain- at Topeka SJate hos pital, Topeka, Kansas. The second sermon in the series of three sermons on God at First Methodist church will be given Sunday entitled "In His Love" by Dr. George Roseberry. The chancel choir will sing "The Sanctus" at the 11 ajn. service. The youth choir will sing "Mindful of His Own" Board of trustees meet Mon day at a breakfast meeting.- Methodist men meet Thurs- noon at the church with the Rev. Robert Dowrey as speak er. The Ladies Bible class meets Thursday noon at the church. " Dr. Roseberry and Mr. Religious Drama Scheduled Sunday The Rev. J. M. McCraw of the First Southern Baptist chugch, 794 Lozier lane, has announced that in place of the regular service Sunday there will be a religious drama, "The Challenge of the Cross," by the Volunteer Mis sion Band of Wayland Baptist church, Plainview, Texas. The cast includes eight young1 college students and is under the direction of Martin Landers, professor of speech and drama at the college. The service will begin at 11 a.m. i Following the service the entire congregation will have a picnic dinner at a local park. . For the past week the church has been conducting a religious survey in adjacent communities in view of es tablishing a mission Sunday school. Assisting the pastor in this work are Miss Lynda Far ley and Miss Murlene Seright. - Miss Farley is from Kenni wick, Wash., and is a sopho more at Columbia Basin col lege. She is sponsored by the Baptist Student Union. Miss Seright is from Elk City, Okla., and is a graduate of Wayland Baptist college, Plainview, Texas. Mission Sunday Speaker Scheduled at St. Peter's Miss Gertrude Simon, of Hong Kong, nurse, teacher and deaconess, will be the fea tured speaker at St. Peter's Lutheran church, 1020 East Main st., Sunday at 11 a.m. It is the congregation's annual Mission Sunday. Miss Simon joined the mis sionary force of The Lutheran c h u r c h Missouri synod in 1927; beginning her work among the Chinese on the Chi na mainland where she served in Hupeh and Shasi provinces. Work in Hong Kong ' .Arriving at Hong Kong she set to work teaching the Chris tian Gospel to the refugees from the mainland. Miss Simon is the elder sis ter of the Rev. John E. Simon of St. Peter's Lutheran church. After her visit in Med ford she plans to attend the Lutheran Deaconess conven tion at Ft. Wayne, Ind., and then to proceed to Wisconsin Dowrey will attend the Eu gene District Minister's An nual retreat to be held at Dead Indian-Soda Springs Youth camp. The ministers will hear a review of the year's work reviewed by the secretaries of the con ference. Minister Starts Sixth Year At Nazarene Church Sunday will mark the be ginning of the sixth year the Rev. Raymond W. Hum has been pastor of the First Church of the Nazarene, Med ford. Members of the congre gation will welcome him home from a three week vacation to begin his sixth year here. During the five-year term extensive remodeling of the activity building and addi tions to the church plant have been made. Membership in the church and Sunday school have all-times highs. Ground work was laid for the opening of a second church in Medford, with First church donating the major portion of money. Nucleus of members for the initial organization of the Mt. Pitt Avenue Church of the Nazarene were First Church members. Under present leadership, the Church recently engaged in a financial canvass, pledg ing $500,000 for current re modeling and future expan sion. Last year church giving reached the all-time high of $48,458. Eastwood Baptists Announce Schedule "A Time of Crisis" is the title of the sermon to be given by the Rev. Richard M. Jones at the 11 a.m. service at the Eastwood Baptist church, North Keene Way dr. at Ridgeway ave., Sunday. The chancel choir will sing the anthem, "But the Lord is Mindful of His Own." Nursery care is provided. There is no evening service during the summer months. The Baptist Youth Fellowship meets on Tuesday evening. Eastwood Baptist church is located north of Hedrick Jun ior High school and is affiliat ed with the American Baptist Convention. ARMY SERVICES ' The Salvation Army will be holding its regular services Sunday with the holiness service starting at 11 a.m. Lt. David Petersen will speak on the subject "God's Great Love." The Salvation service at 7:30 p.m. will include Lt. David Petersen speaking on "God's Great Salvation." The public is welcome at services. to be present for the '60th wedding anniversary of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. F. Simon, Bonduel, Wis. Mr. Simon also plans to at tend the anniversary. It is hoped that all nine of the Si mon children will be able to attend. During the mission service St. Peter's choir, directed by Al Huntemann, will sing "We Give Thee But Thine Own" and the "Seven-fold Amen." The children's choir, under the direction of Mrs. Emil Taws, will sing "I Am Jesus' Little Lamb." A mission offering will be taken. Mr. and Mrs. Simon and Miss Simon are currently tit tending The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod convention in San Francisco. At the meeting Dr. John W. Friday, June 26, 1959 Majority of Local Congregation to Eugene Assembly The Medford Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses an nounced today that nearly 100 per centof the congregation members have formulated plans to travel to Eugene, to join 4,000 to 6,000 delegates in their "Awake Ministers" convention there, July 9 through 12. "Knowing the number of members who are plannmg to attend, the Eugene members have been working for weeks to obtain rooming accommo dations for us," said T. R. Thompson, presiding minister of the local congregation. - The Medford man said that speakers from the Watchtow er Bible and Tract Society's headquarters in New York will be featured, including Max Harry Larson, director of the New York corporation and manager of the printing plant. He will, in addition, serve as convention chairman, and be assisted by Russell V. Mock, minister of a Brooklyn congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, who also works in the Bible printing plant as an engineer. Principal Speaker "The principal speaker will be E. D. Rosam Jr.," Thomp son said. The Eugene convention is one of 3J9 to be held in the United States, Canada and Iceland this summer. Six are scheduled for the West coast. "Assemblies are as impor tant to Jehovah's Witnesses as their regular meetings, which number five each week," the Medford minister said. " Is the Bible a Man Made Book?" will be the title of the public talk Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Kingdom hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 2 4 0 2 Jacksonville highway. The Watchtower study will be held at 7:30 p.m. with the subject "Christians -Need Accurate Knowledge." Methodists Set School Dates Vacation Church school will begin Monday, July 6, at First " Methodist church and will continue through July 17, the hours being 9 lo 11 a.m., according to the Rev. Robert Dowrey, who will be general superintendent of the school. Ages of those who will at tend include those who will begin school in the fall of I960 through those who will be in the seventh grade this fall. Pre-registration forms will be available Sunday, Fri day, July 3, and Sunday, July 5, at the church office. Mrs. Robert A. Forbes will be superintendent of the younger children's kindergar ten and ' will use the text "Children Learn from Jesus." Mrs. Don Faber will be super intendent of the older chil dren's kindergarten using the text "Stories About Jesus." Mrs. A. O. Walker will be su perintendent of the primary department .using the text "Outdoors in Palestine." Su perintendent of the junior de partment will be Mrs. C. Gor don Morris and the text for this group will be "Praise Ye the Lord." ' St. Luke's Church Plans Activities Sunday school for the chil dren's department and the worship service are both held at 9:30 ajn. Sermon Topic The Rev. William C. Piper will preach at both services on the topic "The Faith to Live By." At the first service Mrs. Vera Selby will sing a solo. At the second service the chancel choir will sing the anthem "Heavenly Light." Mrs. Wayne Wakefield and Mrs. W. I. House will be host esses at the coffee hour. This will be the last coffee hour during the summer months. The Christian Youth Fellow ship will meet at 7 p.m. for their study. Bert Lindemann will be host for the youth fire side at 8 p.m. Mr. Piper will be in Turner this week attending the state convention of Christian Churches. He is head of the Evangelistic commission for the state. Mrs. Ralph Cook, who is on the state worship committee will also attend the convention. SummerCommunion Service Scheduled Thex summer communion service will be held at 'the Congregational church Sun day at the usual 10 ajn. hour. Visitors are welcome as at all the services. The commun ion meditation by the Rev. Thomas McCamant will be "Our Weakness and Our Strength." ' At the close of the service a congregational meeting will be held. Principal business will be a discussion of the Sun day school, following a report from the Christian Education committee. Co-chairman for the every member canvass committee will also be nomin ated and elected. There will also be discussion of a Cen tennial service. The date for the annual vesper services at Crater Lake has been set for July 12 at 4 p.m. Missionary Film Set At Pilgrim Holiness The missionary film, "A Cry in the Night," will be shown at the Medford Pilgrim Holi ness church, East Jackson at Bessie sts., Sunday at .7:30 pjn. An hour-long, full-color doc umentary, produced by World Vision, Inc., the film recently won first place in the docu mentary division of the Win ona Lake Film Festival, an in ternational competition for re ligious films. Churches using it, rather than paying rental fees, are required to take an offering for their own foreign mission ary program. TOPIC Gold Hill - "New Lamps for Old," will be the sermon topic by the Rev. James F. Eubanks Jr. Sunday at 11 a.m. worship service in the Gold Hill Community Meth odist church. It will be World Service Sunday. CHURCH NEWS National Religious Publicity Council Churches 'The Word Made Flesh". The meeting will be announced at church school Sunday morn ing. At 4:30 pjn. Sunday the Westminister Fellowship will meet at the church in order to go to Jacksonville for a joint meeting with the WF group there. The combined groups plan to go up the Applegate river for swimming and a picnic, after which de votions and the meeting will be held. Geneva Fellowship for all post-high school young people will have its first meeting of the summer Sunday at 7 p.m. at the George Flanagan home, North Pacific highway. There will be swimming and games. The group will meet at the church Thursday at 7:30 p.m. for a time of prayer and Bible study. A party for all college and other post-high school young people is plan ned for Friday, July 3 at 6:30 p.m. Ashland-"The Marks of His Presence" will be the sermon topic at both the 9:45 and 11 a.m. worship services Sunday at First Presbyterian church, Ashland. The Rev. B. J. Hol land, minister, will speak. Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. the men's breakfast will be held at Omar's Dining room. Central Point - The Rev. Bruce J. Weber, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, Central Point, will' preach Sunday on the subject, "My Messenger" at 11 a.m. This sermon will be a study of the book of Malachi. Following the service a fel lowship hour will be held. Westminster Fellowship will meet at 7 p.m. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Archie Purdy, 3521 Oak Pine Way, and the topic for discussion will be "The Disadvantages of Being Christian." Jacksonville-The monthly church fellowship night din ner at the First Presbyterian church, Jacksonville, will be held Saturday atthe church at 6:30 p.m. The minister, the Rev. King K. Jones, will speak Sunday at 11 a.m. on "Can the 'Saved' Be Lost?", another in the series on "Perplexing Portions of Presbyterian Belief." The adult choir will sing "Consider and Hear Me" which will be their final selec tion for the summer. Miss Jane Anders will be soloist. The junior choir, under the direc tion of Mrs. Ross Crowley, will sing during the worship services this summer. The Jacksonville West minster fellowship, will meet at the church at 4:30 p.m. and will be hosts to the Med ford Westminster Fellowship. The groups will travel to a spot on the Applegate river for recreation, picnic supper and program. This will be the final fellowship program for the summer. The group will reconvene in September. The church will liold a Va cation Bible school from Mon day, July 6, through July 17 for children from age 5 through the sixth grade. The daily classes are scheduled from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Children who plan to at tend are asked to fill out a reigstration card at the manse if they have not already done so. Although it is not neces sary to preregister to attend the school, church officials will have a better idea of the enrollment if the majority fill out these cards. Wednesday, July 1, a meet ing for Bible school workers will be held at 7:15 p.m. Rogue River-The Rev. Rob ert T. Bridge will complete his ministry as interim pastor of the Hope Presbyterian church, Rogue River, Sunday. The monthly coffee hour will immediately follow the morn ing worship service. There will be a family pot luck dinner tonight at 6:30 o'clock in Fellowship hall in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Bridge. Everyone in the congregation and community is invited. Those attending are asked to take their food and table serv ice. Coffee( rolls, and butter will be furnished. I Bible School Goes Into Second Week The Daily Vacation Bible school program for school age bovs and eirls will continue at First Baptist church through Friday, July 3. Those in grades one through six meet from 9 a.m. until noon, and the junior high teen time ac tivities are held from 7 to 9 pjn. daily. Thursday, July 2, the clos ing program and demonstra tion of work completed in the school will be held at the church. Special closing day activities for the children are planned for Friday, July 3. Grace Bible Church Organized in Valley The Rev. Tyley O. Evans, former pastor of several area Community Bible churches, is now pastor of ihe newly organized Grace Bible church, 3430 North Pacific highway. Services are held at ihe church each Sunday at 11 a.m with Sunday school at 10 a.m. Worship services are also held at 7:30 p.m. and young people meet at 6:30 p.m. Prayer meeting and Bible study is held Wed nesdays at 7:30 p.m. The church members are currently renting a build at the North Pacific high way address. Dinner Scheduled By Christian Home Fellowship Glenn Frye, dean and youth leader of Cannon Beach con ference, Cannon Beach, Ore., will be the speaker at the first dinner meeting of Christian Home Fellowship scheduled here. The event will be held Tuesday, July 7, at 7:30 p.m. at the Medford hotel. Fred DeVoss will be master of cere-, monies and Miss Karen Pat terson will be organist. The program, which is for both teen-agers and their par ents, is for all interested per sons and is interdenomina tional. It was explained that persons not having a teen ager must "adopt" one for the evening to be able to attend the dinner. The first Christian Home Workshop was held Wednes day morning at the Girls Com munity club and was attend ed by 13 representatives from various valley churches. Slate Campmeeting Scheduled Monday The Assembly of God annu al camp meeting for churches in the Oregon district will get underway Monday, June 29, and continue through July 12 at the permanent camp site near Brooks, Ore., according to the Rev. R. E. Cull, section al presbyter of the Rogue valley section. Meetings will be held daily at 10 a.m. and 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. while the camp is in session. Camp meeting evangelist will be the Rev. C. C. Burnett, national secretary of the de partment of education for As sembly of God churches, Springfield, Mo. Camp teach er will be the Rev. Robert Ashcroft, president of Evangel college and Central Bible in stitute, Springfield, Mo. John Mark Davidson of Salem is director of music for all serv ices. Approximately 60 families from the Rogue valley plan to attend all or part of the camp services. The public is invited. Assembly Youth Set Car Wash Day Here A group of teen-agers from First Assembly of God church have designated Saturday as "cawwash day" and will be on hand at Dale Cook's Chevron service station, 416 West Main st., from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the project. Miss Joyce Hen- son is chairman of the youth group. The project has been planned to raise funds for sending teen-agers to the As sembly of God youth camp at Brooks, Ore.
