KlamatK Has Lot of History in Short Time Portland - Klamath Falls has packed a lot of history into the brief span of time sine ."mountain man" Finan McDonald, a trapper for Hud son's Bay company, became the first known white man to explore the area in 1825. So says .Forestry Digest, na tional forest industry news magazine, in a feature spread on that community in its July issue due out in the next few days. The city was founded as a wagon train settlement named Linkville in 1867 during an era of Indian massacres and stagecoach holdups. The first The Digest article says the Klamath basin has one of the nation's richest timber re sources.. The basin, further more, is on a sustained yield basis under which harvest is geared to growth. Even so, says the article, through greater utilization of each tree cut and through finding a use for lodgepole pine-an abundant resource once considered industrially useless-the industry is ex panding its base. The area's new $12,000,000 Johns Man ville plant, which utilizes lodgepole to manufacture acoustical board, has added sawmill moved to the county i 250 jobs to the local economy. in 1863 from the gold diggings at Jacksonville. -Heralded Start The move, says the Digest, heralded the beginning of the important forest industry which today accounts for 85 per cent of the county's man ufacturing and processing ac tivity. ' "We have one of the high est per capita incomes-it was $2,035 in 1957 as against the U.S. average of $l,734-of any city in the country," Frank Tucker, Chamber of Com merce manager, said. "The forest industries and agricul ture give us a stable, depend able basis for our economy." School Bus Drivers To Renew Permits Salem-flTD-Licensed school bus drivers were urged by the Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles today to renew then- licenses now for the fall school term. Licenses of more than 2,500 of these drivers who were li censed during the initial year of the program expire on July 1. Police said the . victim, Adolph Joseph Verneris, 63, en route from his former home in Salem to a new resi dence in San Leandro, Calif., had left the property in his car overnight while he slept at the hotel. The thief or thieves had broken the car's right front wind wing in order to reach in and unlock the door, ac cording to the report. Most of the drop came in green Douglas fir di mension, although weakness was reported in some dry items and in No. 2 and No. 3 pine boards. Despite the drop, there has been a firming tendency in green standard and better grade dimension in the past few days, Crow's said.' Ran dom length 2x4s have shown more stability at the $73 to $75 level. Utility grade was still losing some ground, and board items were also on the weak side. Weakness in the pine area was most noticeable in No. 2 and No. 3 common boards of several species, with Ponder- osa pine and Engelmann spruce losing themost ground. Some lower prices have been noted in dry dimension from the pine area, but the drop has not been as sharp as in green coast fir.
