Alvarez while they will still produce an infection in a child, they will not pro duce a serious illness or any paralysis. Much the same thing was done 150 years ago with smallpox vaccine by pas sing it through a calf. In the calf it is changed into a virus which, except in very rare cases, produces only the so called cow-pox. But this "at tenuated" virus can usually protect the person against smallpox. ' Marvin L. Kline, executive director of the Sister Eliza beth Kenny Foundation, of Minneapolis, wrote me that they have been having excel lent results using this "live" vaccine at the University of Minnesota. In Colombia, South America 130, 000 small children . were similarly vac cinated. Practically all of the children in Managua, Nicara gua, were vaccinted in -the summer of 1957 in order to stop an outbreak of polio. We heaij that a live virus vaccine is being tested out on an enormous number of people in Russia. No bad results have" been reported. Now, of course, experts will be watching to see how much protection the children have, and they will want to find out how long the protection will Oregon Reserves Rated Satisfactory Fort Lawton, Wash. - (UPD -Every U.S. Army Reserve unit in Oregon was rated satisfac tory or higher during the an nual general inspections con ducted during the past 12 months. All persons who have the great sorrow of having a child with nephosis, a form of kid ney disease in which the pa tient usually swells up full of water, will be happy to hear that a new drug has just been reported from the Sloan-Ket-tering Institute in New York City. It is called triamcino lone. It is a synthetic hormone of the cortisone family. Of 15 children treated with it, 10 promptly went into a com plete" remission, and four into a partial remission. Some of these four, after slumping a bit, again got a remission when treated with the drug.;. MMT The Register and Tribune Syndicate, Box 957, Des Moines 4, Iowa. (Released by The Register and ' Tribune Syndicate, 1959) Secret Weapon Display Paralyzes Animal Subjects Washington (UPD Mem bers of the House Science and Space Committee went through a "gripping experi ence" watching animals being paralyzed by new secret weap ons developed by the Army, it has been disclosed. Chairman Overton Brooks (D-La.) said the "actual dem onstration" made it easy to imagine what would happen if such weapons were used against Americans in battle or in air attacks at home. Not Identified Brooks said the weapons used were "new experimental incapacitating agents" but he did not identify them further. The Army said recently it was working on a nerve gas which would have similar effects. "To relieve the minds of the public," he said, "the ani malsubjects were in no way permanently harmed even though they suffered almost immediate temporary bqdy pa ralysis." . However, Brooks warned that "the consequences for the nation . . .if we let down our defences, would be something else again." Not Enough Money He voiced concern that only one-thousandth of this coun try's defense budget it ear marked for chemical and germ, warfare weapons. It's not enough, Brooks said. The congressman did not re veal how much money actual ly was being spent but he call ed it "pitifully small." Brooks issued his statement following closed -door testi mony that the Russians would resort to germ warfare in any future war "if it is to their advantage." The report came from Maj. Gen. Marshall Stubbs, chief Army chemical officer,; who said the Soviets already have "openly stated", that the" next war would see the use of such weapons."
