Newspaper Page Textt 0 CENTRAL POINT Vacation Program Set Br DORIS HUGHES Central , Point - A summer vacation program in athletics is planned lor the children in the Central Point area. The program, whifh is sponsored by the city and schools, will begin June 22. Don Miller and Keith John, son will direct ethe boys groups. Mrs. Don Miller will be the girls' athletic director. Program activities aro planned for boys from t to IS years. More free play will be fea tured this year tfttm last. Fridays will bt "special" days with a bike hike planned for the first Friday, June 26. Other special day plans in clude swimming ptrtias, a pet contest, wheel competition and possibly a fish derby. Boys who prefer sports other than baseball will find other activities in the program. Two Pee Wee teams will be organized this summer. Also featured in baseball will be the intermediate and cub teams as well as the in- termural teams. All boys in terested in the program are to meet for registration at 8 a.m. Monday, June 22, at the Crater High school baseball field. Mrs. Don Miller Is in charge of the girls program which is planned for 6 through 18 years old. The girls program will include arts and crafts, free play, cro quet, badminton, ping pong, basketball, softball, baton and tumbling A girls' softball team will be organized. Four softball games with two Medford teams are 'included in a ten tative schedule.. Registration date for the girls will be at 1 pan. Monday, June 22, at the Central Point Junior High school little gymnasium ' A Boy Scout Court of Honor was held at the Amer ican Legion hall in Central .Joint ' June 5. Among those tending were Boy Scouts, Troop 40, their families, spe cial guests and members of the . Boy . Scout committee. Acting as master of ceremo- ifes was Dr. A. O. Clark, Bedford, district chairman. Posting the colors for open ing ceremony were Jody .Van Horn, Boy Scout, and Larry $oner, Eagle Scout. Assisting them were Cub Scouts Mar tin Chadd and Jack Snook. The leader was Jim Ricks. John Yoakleyled in the flag salute. Dave Parker played the trumpet. j. Dr. Clark ' introduced Bill Colley, Central Point, com mitteeman; Kenneth Toner, Central Point, advancement; Jim Grigsby, Medford, assist ant commissioner; Lloyd Chadd, Central Point, Cub Scoutmaster, Pack 40; Bill Russell, Central Point, insti tutional representative; Har old Wright, Central Point, advancement; Harry Barne burg, Medford, commissioner at large; and Paul Retter, Ashland, district chairman. Colley made the presenta tion of the . second class awards to . Fred Marshall,' Jck Parker, Don Davis, Ran dy Cavin, Billy Wright, Ran dy Penney, Bob Marshall, Larry Glenn, Jody Van Horn, Max Brassfield, Kelly Wil son, Billy. Colley, Jon Single ton and Danny Reed. -Lloyd Crfadd presented first -class awards to Frank Armstrong, Joe Reeder, John Boyce, Lloyd Toner, Robert Snook, Jim Ricks , and John Yoakley. Kenneth Toner pre sented star rank pins to Rob ert Snook, Jim Ricks, Lloyd Toner, Joe Reeder, Frank Armstrong and John Yoak ley. Jim Grigsby presented eagle rank badges to Larry Toner and mention was given to Dave Parker, Harold Wright 'and Bill Russell pre sented the 'star merit , badges to Robert Snook, seven achievements; Lloyd" Toner, five achievements; Joe Reed er, five achievements;- John Yoakley, five achievements; Jim Ricks, five achieve-' ments; and Frank Armstrong, five achievements. Jim Grigs by presented merit badges, eagle rank, to Larry Toner, 10 achievements aid "Dave Parker, six achievements. Re ceiving . additional merit badges were Fred Marshall, two achievements, and Jack Parker, four achievements. All of the Scouts received . miniature pins which they pinned on their mothers. The closing ceremonies were giv en by Jim Ricks, Larry To ner, Jody Van Horn, Jack Snook, Martin Chadd and Dave Parker. Refreshments were served from a table dee orated with - red rose gar- lands. The Central Point Jun ior Chamber of Commerce sponsors Troop 40. A potluck dinner was held June 6 at the David DeAr mond home for committee members, leaders, den moth ers and their families of Cub Scout Pack: 40. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Chadd, Virginia and Martin, Mr. and . Mrs. John Snook, Robert and Jac, Mr. and Mrs. Harold - Wright, Carol and Bill, Mr. and Mrs. Al John son, an Gloria, and Mr. and Mrs. David DeArmond and five children. - Den 1. Cub Scouts had a swimming party at Twin Plunges and a picnic at Lithia park in Ashland June 7. Viar, Edith and Bruce, La Von Mclvor, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Henson, Steven and Mike, Mr. and Mrs. William Irons and Ern est, Mrs. A. Ayresl Lexie and Dennis Hamilton, John Yoak ley and Lloyd Toner. Den 3 Cub Scout Pack 40 had a picnic at TouVelle park June 4. Attending were Chris Johns, Steven Colley, Billy Walters, David Cavin, Fran kie Norris, Ricky Kendall, Michael Henson, Jimmy Ma lot, Tommy Offutt, and Mrs. Lloyd Chadd, Den mother. Also accompanying the group were Mrs. Norman Hensen, Mrs. Claude Allsop, Mrs. George Johns and Mrs. Alvy Kendall. News About Servicemen IN EXERCISE Pfc. Don C. Imhausen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ira H. Imhau sen, route 4, Medford, recent ly participated in a NATO field training maneuver in Italy. The maneuver was con ducted under simulated com bat conditions. Imhausen is a mechanic in the 82nd Artillery's Headquar ters and Service Battery in Vicenza, Italy. He arrived in Europe in May, 1958. ABOARD DESTROYER Seantan Melvyn B. Arent of Jacksonville is , serving aboard the destroyer, USS Colwell and recently took part in an amphibious land ing on the beaches of Camp Pendleton, Calif. The opera tion involved more than 60 Navy ships and 25,000 ma rines. , ON CARRIER Radio Seaman Ronald E. Renisen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl E. Remsen of Butte Falls, is serving aboard the attack aircraft carrier, USS Ranger, in the Western Pacific. The Ranger is on a tour of duty with the Seventh Fleet. Greensboro, N. C. -(UPD- Harold Edgar Johnson became manager of the local store of a shoe chain this week, re placing Ray Johnson who was transferred to the Washington store. Harold Edward Johnson had been transferred a few days earlier from Greensboro to Philadelphia. VICTORY KISS Pro golfer Billy Casper of Apple Valley, Calif., gets a victory kiss from his wife, Shirley, after he was presented with the trophy for winning the U. S. Open at Mamaroneck, N. Y. Casper copped the $12,000 first prize with a 72-hole total of 282. Har- Piggy, Bank Theft Brings Life Term Chicago-(DPD-John' D. ris, 27, was sentenced to life imprisonment Tuesday for stealing a child's piggy bank. It was Harris' third ; con viction and his 27th arrest. The life sentence was manda tory under the Habitual Crim inal Act. SAUCER NOT AIRCRAFT London -(UPD- The govern ment ruled Tuesday that Brit ain's new flying saucer is not an aircraft. The House of Commons was told the exper imental SRN-1 Hovercraft "is a vehicle for sea or land transport rather than an air craft." The Hovercraft, which has been undergoing trials near Cowes in the Isle of Wight, is capable of traveling over land or water on a cush ion of air.
