Black Takes Trophy As Top Eliminator A thrilling duel of speea climaxed yesterday'i drag races at Camp White spon sored by Southern Oregon Timing association. Pitted in the top elimin ator race of the day was Noel Black, Medford dragster pilot behind the wheel of his "buy lark 220," and Bub Hewitt sunning the powerful "Zom bie," an A-Competition coupe belonging to the Wheelers club of Medford. Black was slow getting off the starting line and Zombie built up an early lead of some four car lengths. Midway down the strip Zombie was still leading with Black's drag ster coming up fast. At the finish line it was Black who flashed across first to win by a length. For his efforts Black won both top eliminator honori and the fast-time trophy. His best effort of the day was 119.84 miles per hour in the one-fourth mile distance. . More than 90 contestants and a good sized crowd were on hand yesterday for the opening racing slate of the season. Records fell in six classes and with the indica tion that many more will be bettered in the coming meets on the SOTA strip. v New recotd holders include: Glen Cave, Medford, F-stock; Kenny Mitchell, Triangle Lake, A-stock; Douglas Pruitt, Medford, Super stock; G. O. Wright, Crescent City, Calif., E-gas; Chuck Culmer, Ash land, E-sports; Gene Hoyt, Medford, C-sports; and Jerry Copley,' Grants Pass, B-sports. . Minnie Minoso drove in a total of nine runs in Cleve land's sweep of Washington. Minoso hit a homer in each game, including a grandsiam in the ninth inning of the nightcap. Charlie Maxwell utilized his famed "Sunday punch" in pacing the Tigers to their sweep over the Yankees. Max well's thre-run homer off loser Whitey Ford in the eighth inning brought the Tigers from behind ' and extended Frank Lary's life-time record over New York to 19-5. The homer was Maxwell's 14th, the eighth one he has hit on a Sunday this season.
