Black was slow getting off
the starting line and Zombie
built up an early lead of some
four car lengths. Midway
down the strip Zombie was
still leading with Black's drag
ster coming up fast. At the
finish line it was Black who
flashed across first to win by
a length.
For his efforts Black won
both top eliminator honori
and the fast-time trophy. His
best effort of the day was
119.84 miles per hour in the
one-fourth mile distance.
. More than 90 contestants
and a good sized crowd were
on hand yesterday for the
opening racing slate of the
season. Records fell in six
classes and with the indica
tion that many more will be
bettered in the coming meets
on the SOTA strip.

The Pirates won the game
by rallying for three runs in
the bottom of the eighth, scor
ing the tie-breaking run on
Gil Hodges' error. Dick Stuart
drove in three runs in the
nightcap with his. 11th and
12th homers tohelp Vernon
Law to his sixth triumph.
The Chicago Cubs blanked
firsVplace Milwaukee, 6-0, but
the Braves actually increased
their lead to 1V& games over
the second-place Giants, who
dropped a twin-bill to -the
Phillies, 7-5 and 6-3. The Car
dinals won their opener from
the Reds, 5-4, but Cincinnati
took the nightcap, 3-2.v
In the American league, the
White Sox retained their half
game lead by sweeping a pair
from the Orioles, 9-6 and 3-2
in 10 innings; the Indians beat
the Senators twice, 9-5 and
12-6; the Tigers won both ends
of a double-header from the
Yankees, 3-2 and 8-2, and the
ReA Sox emerged from the
cellar with a 6-1 triumph over
the . Athletics. A scheduled
second game between Boston
and Kansas City was post
poned because of rain.
