The In dustry. Average was down 97 cents per thousand, with most of the drop coming in green Douglas Fir dimension and in Number 2 and Number 3 Com mon Ponderosa Pine boards. Prices remain at a high level, however, according to Crow's, with the 75 items in the index averaging close to $15 over June 1958 levels. Green Fir dimension con tinued to slide, Crow's said, with random length standard and better grade 2x4's dip ping to the $77 mark. Utility and economy -grades also dropped slightly on the rail market. Kiln-dried dimension remained steady, according to Crow's, and prices paid for July and August cargo load ings are unchanged at strong prices. Friday, June 12, 1959 Former Phoenix Boy Critical With Polio Danny York, 4-year-old son of the Rev. and Mrs. Leonard York, formerly of Phoenix, and Church of the Nazarene Missionaries in British Hon duras, is reported in critical condition in a Miami, Fla., hospital with polio. The Yorks, members of First Church of the Nazarene, Medford, spent a year in the valley leaving here June, 1957, for Corazal, British Honduras. They had previous ly spent four years here. Danny, one of four sons, be came ill May 26, but it was first thought he had malaria. When he showed signs of paralysis he was flown . 80 miles to Belize where an iron lung was available at the British hospital. Returned to U.S. - T When the boy's condition worsened the American con sul there made arrangements for him to be returned to the United States. The Key West Navy Base wa, contacted since they had a portable iron lung. Homestead Strategic Air Command base had a doctor and the Navy furnished a hos pital corpsman. The 2-engine amphibious plane1 and crew of four were supplied by. the Coast Guard. In Belize, it was necessary to take the lung six miles from "the airport to the hospital, then return to the, plane. When the family arrived in Miami June 2, Danny was tak en to the Variety Children's hsopital. . Mrs. York is the former Mirian Cummons, daughter of C. L. Cummons, 1566 Pacific rd. Local relatives reported that the Yorks have written Presi dent Eisenhower thanking him for the Armed Services part in getting Danny from British Honduras to the United States. Prior to entering the mis sionary field, the Yorks estab lished the First Church of the Nazarene in Yreka. Zone Change Denied By City Planners A requested zone change for all but two properties along the south side of East Jackson st. between Genessee and Stark sts., was denied last night by the Medford Plan ning commission, The petitioners asked a change to limited commercial zoning. Clif Ouellette, Med ford attorney who represent ed them, stated the area was already in effect a commer cial zone. ' But commission members pointed out that granting the change would be against good planning policy. One noted that a change to limited com mercial zoning had already been granted to Rogue Valley State bank for the northeast corner of Genessee and East Jackson sts., and explained that approving commercial zoning on both sides of a street was considered poor. Maintaining Zoning - . Ouellette commented that maintaining residential zon ing for his clients "isn't a f air burden to place on homeown ers living in a commercial zone but limited to residential use." i , The apparent effect of the commission's action was to draw the line for further com mercial zoning . along East Jackson, for the time being at least, at the bank's property just east of Genessee. There is commercial zoning further east, however. The planners deferred a public hearing on another zone change request for a change to light industrial for property at the northeast cor ner of Biddle and McAndrews rd. This property reportedly would be used for a trailer park. Light Industrial Light industrial zoning, ac cording to Medford's present ordinance, is required for trailer parks. But v a trailer park ordinance is now under consideration that would per mit parks meeting certain standard, in special multiple family zones. The commission called for public hearings at its next meeting on three zone change requests. One is for re-zoning more than 20 lots along Crater Lake ave. be'tween East Main and" East Jackson sts. from single family. to multiple fam ily residential. Multiple fam ily zoning would permit clinics, lodge halls, apart ments, office buildings and other uses. A second, by O. H. Bengt son, asks rezoning from single family to multiple family for property he owns at the south east corner pf East Jackson st. and Oregon terace. This prop erty, currently occupied by a stable facility, would be used according to the request for apartments. . A" Third Request The third request concerns rezoning of Harold Farr's trailer park property on North Pacific highway from limited light industrial to light in dustrial. (DPD The Oregon Centennial Wagon Train camped on a homestead ranch near historic Split Rock 60 miles northwest of Rawlins Thursday night after four days on the original trail to the Oregon country. The wagoneers were cheer ed Wednesday night with the return of their missing mas cot, Racket the raccoon, given to them in Guernsey, Wyo. He disappeared during the week end at Casper but a radio ap peal located him, sporting a new red collar and a huge ap petite. He was given milk and syrup and put to bed. Nearly 1,000, persons visit ed the tram at Independence Rock, some coming from a ranch 100 miles away. The Oregonians, at a dance in the Sweetwater community hall given by the Sweetwater Women's club, met Indians, wild horse trainers, cattlemen, sheepmen, and tough field workers from the Bear oil dis trict. - T Tom Sun, local rancher and historian for the Sweetwater area, pointed out the route of the Old Oregon Trail to Cav alcade advance scouts as they paused at his historic ranch at Devil's Gate Thursday morning. $105,649.09 $102,687.84 $ 94,575.00 TOTAL ALL RECEIPTS $138,650.00 is the result of an error at city hall. . Rain Dampens Centennial, Rose Festival Spirit Portland (DPD Attendance at the Oregon Centennial Ex position picked up to 14,696 Thursday despite poor weath er conditions. The forecast was for show ers Saturday for the Grand Floral parade which high lights the annual Rose Festi val. ' Attendance at the opening day of the Centennial was 9,616. The Ice Capades show opened Thursday night at the Centennial and Rose Festival queen Mary Sue Woolfolk and her royal court were present ed. Ticket' Sales Mount Centennial officials said the advance ticket sales to arena shows and for admission to the Exposition and Interna tional Trade Fair passed the $160,000 mark Thursday and were expected to reach $200, 000 by Saturday night. 'The Rose Festival was high lighted this afternoon by the annual Junior Parade on the east side. Upwards of a quar- rter of a million people may see the big parade through downtown Portland Saturday. Rain Insurance While Rose Festival officials will frown if it rains hard on Saturday, Centennial officials will at least have something to smile about. If it rains more than two-tenths of an inch between 10 p.m. and 4 p.m. today, Saturday or Sun day the Centennial will get $10,000 for each day it does through its rain insurance. YMCA Day Camp Set June 15-20 Saturday is the last day that boys between 7 and 10 years old can register for the first session of t h e Young Men's Christian Association's day camp on the Applegate river, YMCA officials have an nounced.
