There are more than 200 ice cream flavors but the major ity of eaters still say "make mine vanilla". Beyond ques tion, vanilla ice cream is the perfect underpinning for sun daes, milk shakes, sodas. One usually figures that a pint of ice cream will make 4 serv ings when combined with a sauce. Sundaes are at home in chi na dishes, dessert glasses, can taloupe halves, peach, pear or banana halves . . . and a great many of them are going into plastic-coated dishes and small plates that are designed for every possible ccasion and ''every day" too. Chocolate topping contin ue! far and away the favorite, used alone or. in combination with fruits, nuts, coconut. Molasses or Honey ' ' Many agree that the finest of all ice cream toppings is a tablespoon of unsulphured molasses or honey spooned over. RaUin-Fruii auc Add plentiful raisins to any leftover syrup from canned fruits such as pineapple, peaches, apricots, berries, plums or cherries. Combine and let stand in refrigerator at least 12 hours for blending. Chocolate Balls These are tremendously popular. Roll balls of ice cream in chopped nuts and top with chocolate sauce. Gr roll In coconut and top with chocolate sauce. Or top with chocolate sauce; and sprinkle liberally with chopped nuts or snowy coconut. 8piced Lemonade " Party stuff for enjoyment ' all summer long. Boil three- fourths cup sugar artf three fourths cup water for about five minutes. Combine one cup of this syrup with 12 whole cloves and a three-inch stick cinnamon;' simmer five minutes. Strain and add juice of five lemons and one quart water. Chill. Pour over ice cubes made of lemonades Cheese Cuslard Ring Will Please Family v A fine way to use up your share of June's bounty of chedar chese. A recent host ess baked this custard in a regular pie crust and served in pie wedges very attrac tively. If you try it that way thoroughly butter pie crust pan to prevent sogginess. Omit water pan if you bake custard in crust. 2 tablespoons buter 3 tablespoons flour 1 cup milk t . , Vt teaspoon salt V teaspoon paprika Vt teaspoon mustard 1 cup grated American cheese 1 cup grated Swiss cheese 4 eggs . Melt butter: add flour, stir ring to a smooth paste. Add milk gradually, stirring con stantly until mixture thickens vsA is smooth. Add salt, pap me, mustard and cheese and stir until cheese is melted. Re move from heat id beat in eggs, one at a time. " Your into buttered nine-inch riag mold. Pjtee in pan of hot water (omit u you re Dax- ing in pie shell) and bake in moderate oven, 350 degrees, 40 minutes. Aerve with any creamed green vegetable and broiled tomato or peach halves. Sour Cream Dressing ' A wonderful tart -sweet i dressing for slaw using plenti ful cabbage, sliced cucumbers or tossed salad greens and plentiful, popular dairy sour cream. Combine these ingredients in a jar and shake thoroughly or beat in a bowl until smooth and creamy: one-half cup sour cream, one tablespoon sugar, one-half teaspoon salt, one half teaspoon paprika, freshly ground black pepper, one-half teaspoon mustard, two table spoons vinegar, one-half tea spoon salad herbs. Dairy Products lead June Parade of Better Values June is Dairy Month for the simple reason that this is the month when our milk cow population works hardest and consistently establishes new production records. The dairy industry is a ma jor one in our state which not only supplies most of our dai ry needs but exports some items to other states and to other countries. Considering the food value in a quart of milk, it is one of the best buys for the mon ey, day in and day out. Cal cium, phosphorus and iron, all found in milk, are the three most important miner als needed by the human body for health and growth Other fine plentiful dairy items readily available at rea sonable cost include sour cream, cottage cheese, Ameri can (chedar) cheese, a wide variety of fancy cbeses, but termilk, ice cream and other frozen dairy products. And of course nonfat dry milk which is an exceptional bargain. . Meat and Poultry Those who believe that "meat makes the meal" find many excellent values in pork, some specials in brais ing, long cooking beef and lamb cuts. Poultry continues in the best buy bracket. Cold cuts are many; make good eat ing at reasonable cost in sand wiches and in hot dishes. 1 Good idea to have handy a few cans of specialty meats for both planned and emer gency meals. Fish and Shellfish Good buys, wonderful eating in plentiful, reasonably priced cod, fish sticks, flounder, hal ibut, rockfish, salmon and shrimp. Vegetables Bins continue to overflow with . fresh - produce of high quality; potatoes in all sizes, tender cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, romaine, spinach, rhu- b a r b, bunched vegetables. Available at modest cost are celery bunches and hearts, corn-on-the-cob, cucumbers, variety of summer squashes, tomatoes. Berries Beckon 5 Strawberries are making way in displays for the bush berries of the Youngberry, Loganberry, Boysenberry and Olallie types. Early grapes are ahead of their season. Ap ricots, peaches and. figs are nudging plentiful Valencias and grapefruit. Apples, sur prisingly, have excellent qual ity despite long storage. Mel ons are increasing seasonally with slight price reductions noted. t Get that present now for your own . . . !
