G) VaraCss fad DEBdoans 7th Loss Dim Sow TOffla 2-7 Victory By United Press International The New York Yankees, back on the ' victory trail again, made it four in a row Saturday when they handed the Cleveland Indians their seventh straight loss, 2-1, be hind the six-hit pitching of Bob Turley. , Turley posted his fifth vic tory and had a shutout going until Tito Francona hit a pinch homer with two out in the ninth inning. The Yankees scored their first run off loser Don Fer rarese with the aid of Willie Jones' error in the fifth and then tallied what proved to be the winning run in the eighth on a single by Hank Bauer, a sacrifice by Elston Howard and another single by Mickey Mantle. Howard saved the game for Turley by robbing Rocky Co lavito of a home run with a brilliant leaping catch. Jones was on base at the time. 1 Paul Foytack turned in a six-hit effort and touched off a three-run rally in the eighth to lead the Detroit Tigers to Ja 4-1 triumph over the Wash ington Senators. Loses Shutou Foytack, who gained nis fourth victory, lost his shut out when Faye Throneberry homered for the Senators. LP SO Timing Association Tells Drag Racing Plans Southern Oregon Timing i protect both the driver and association will conduct eight drag races during the sum mer months. Racing events will begin next Sunday, June 14 and will be held every other week until August 23. Climax of the season will be the Cen tennial Gas championships' on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 12 and 13. On Sept. 27 the third annual all charity races for the United Crusade will be held. : - . All races will be conducted at the SOTA drag strip in West Camp White. Association officials indicated numerous improvement have been init iated this year to smooth the general operation of the races and make them more interest ing to the public. Again, the local Lions club will be in charge of the concession fa cilities. Contestants will note sev eral rule changes, mostly in line with those of the Nation al Hot Rod association, per taining to safety measures and classifications of vehicles. One of the -.new rules of in terest ;to the "gas" classes states that all vehicles oper ating in this group must be equipped with a 360 degree safety shield around - the clutch and flywheel assembly. This shield must be constructed of one-quarter inch steel and must not be anchored to the bell housing of the engine. Six Sports Classes Sports car fans will now nave six classes. This is an increase of three more than last year. SOTA officials said the change should result in more entries in sport classes A practice meet is being held today for the purpose of checking equipment, proced ure and organization. It is not an official race and no prizes are being given. The public, nevertheless, is invited to at tend. Members of the various clubs in SOTA will time their cars and participate in the mock eliminations. The con cession stand will not oper ate and there will be no ad mission charge. Littler , Baltimore - (DPD - Dave Ra gan of Chattanooga, Tenn., put on a brilliant birdie bar rage on the back nine for a six-under-par 66 that pulled him even with Gene Littler of Singing Hills, Calif., at the end of the third round in the Eastern Open Golf tourna ment Saturday. Ragan and Litler were dead locked with 203 totals, 13 un der par, for the 54-hole route. With only nine - holes to play today, the 23-year old Ragan trailed the pace-setting Littler by six strokes. However, Ragan all but blasted the flags off the greens1 as he fired five straight birdies, starting at the 11th hole. And his putt for a sixth straight birdie teeter ed on the lip of the cup on the 16th hole. At the same time, Littler was having putting trouble for the first time in the tourn ament. He three-putted three greens for a 71 Saturday. Ed (Porky) Oliver, of Den ver, Colo., started Saturday's .round a stroke behind Littler but went over par for the first time, taking a 73. This put Oliver in a three-way tie at 206 with Don Whitt of Bor rego Springs, Calif., and Hen ry Ransom of St. Andrews, 111. Venturi, the slender Palo Alto, Calif., resident, who captured top money last year with a 272, filed his entry Saturday, joining Sam Snead who entered Friday to become the No. 1 .entrant. Medford 11 Giants Top Reds 13-3; Near lead Cincinnati (UPD The San Francisco Giants surged to within -l1 games of the Na tional league lead Saturdav when they crushed the Cin cinnati Reds, 13-3, with the aid of an 18-hit attack and the eight-hit pitching of Sam Jones. Leon Wagner hit the only homer for the Giants although they raked six Cincinnati pitchers for five doubles in moving up on the league-leading Braves, who dropped a 3-2 decision to the Dodgers. Wagner's homer, his fifth of the season, came with two aboard in the first inning and set the pattern of the day. Victim of the blast was right hander Bob Porkey who de parted in the third inning with his seventh loss against five wins. The Giants, scoring in all but three innings, made it easy for Jones to register his sixth win against five losses. An error by shortstop Andre Rogers in the third inning paved the way for three un earned Red runs and spoiled Jones's bid for a shutout. Wild Inning Aids Giants Phoenix, Ariz .-(UPD-A wild seven-run seventh inning gave the Phoenix Giants an 8-4 de cision over the Portland Beav ers in a Pacific Coast league game Friday night. A key play in the big frame which saw the Giants over come a two run deficit was an errant throw by George Freese, Portland third base man. Freese, trying a force play at the plate, hit Phoenix second baseman . Jim Bride weser on the head. The ball caromed past the catcher. Two runs scored on that play. Big Bill Wilson, Phoenix centerfielder, bit his seventh homer to start the frame off. But it was a broken bat single by pinch hitter Bobby Pres cott that put the Giants ahead 3-2 and set the stage for the wild throw from Freese.. Pendleton Picks Martin Pediqo Pendleton-OJPD-Martin Ped igo, 24 -year -old freshman track coach at the University of Oregon, today was named head track coach at Pendleton high schol. Pegigo, who will take over his duties next fall, also was named head of the physical education department at the high school. He replaces George Rasmussen, who said he was resigning to take a job somewhere in western Ore gon. Pedigo, a former Oregon track star, is a graduate of Hermiston high school. Sailfish Caught On -Mexico Trip Clifford Lewis, 2150 Bar nett rd., and Richard Holz hauser, Eagle Point, returned recently from a successful nine-day sea fishing jaunt to Mexico. Lewis, an accountant, and Holzhauser, a' logger, caught both marlin and sailfish. Holzhauser brought in a 165-pound marlin off LaPaz and Lewis a 115-pounder. Each caught two sailfish off Mazatlan, having, fish on at the same time on one occa sion. BOWLING ROGUE VALLEY LEAGUE State Forest Patrol won the Rogue Valley league bowling championship recently. They won the third round of the loop season and won a play off for the full season honors. Members of the team are Doyle Stockton, Bill Davis, George Davis, Buz Moran, Bert Cook and Gordon Lay ton. An award for the league's most improved average bowl er went to Layton. He then had the best series in the play offs against Domestic Laun dry and Communication Workers.
