the Cleveland Indians their
seventh straight loss, 2-1, be
hind the six-hit pitching of
Bob Turley. ,
Turley posted his fifth vic
tory and had a shutout going
until Tito Francona hit a
pinch homer with two out in
the ninth inning.
The Yankees scored their
first run off loser Don Fer
rarese with the aid of Willie
Jones' error in the fifth and
then tallied what proved to
be the winning run in the
eighth on a single by Hank
Bauer, a sacrifice by Elston
Howard and another single by
Mickey Mantle.
Howard saved the game for

Tells Drag Racing Plans
Southern Oregon Timing i protect both the driver and

mer months.
Racing events will begin
next Sunday, June 14 and
will be held every other week
until August 23. Climax of
the season will be the Cen
tennial Gas championships' on
Saturday and Sunday, Sept.
12 and 13. On Sept. 27 the
third annual all charity races
for the United Crusade will
be held. : -

at the SOTA drag strip in
West Camp White. Association
officials indicated numerous
improvement have been init
iated this year to smooth the
general operation of the races
and make them more interest
ing to the public. Again, the
local Lions club will be in
charge of the concession fa

Contestants will note sev
eral rule changes, mostly in
line with those of the Nation
al Hot Rod association, per
taining to safety measures
and classifications of vehicles.

Sports car fans will now

put on a brilliant birdie bar
rage on the back nine for a
six-under-par 66 that pulled
him even with Gene Littler of
Singing Hills, Calif., at the
end of the third round in the
Eastern Open Golf tourna
ment Saturday.
Ragan and Litler were dead
locked with 203 totals, 13 un
der par, for the 54-hole route.
With only nine - holes to
play today, the 23-year old
Ragan trailed the pace-setting
Littler by six strokes.
However, Ragan all but
blasted the flags off the
greens1 as he fired five
straight birdies, starting at the
11th hole. And his putt for
a sixth straight birdie teeter
ed on the lip of the cup on
the 16th hole.
At the same time, Littler
was having putting trouble
for the first time in the tourn
ament. He three-putted three
greens for a 71 Saturday.
Ed (Porky) Oliver, of Den
ver, Colo., started Saturday's
.round a stroke behind Littler
but went over par for the first
time, taking a 73. This put
Oliver in a three-way tie at

Francisco Giants surged to

tional league lead Saturdav
when they crushed the Cin
cinnati Reds, 13-3, with the
aid of an 18-hit attack and
the eight-hit pitching of Sam
Jones.
Leon Wagner hit the only
homer for the Giants although
they raked six Cincinnati
pitchers for five doubles in
moving up on the league-leading
Braves, who dropped a 3-2
decision to the Dodgers.
Wagner's homer, his fifth
of the season, came with two
aboard in the first inning and
set the pattern of the day.
Victim of the blast was right
hander Bob Porkey who de
parted in the third inning
with his seventh loss against
five wins.
The Giants, scoring in all
but three innings, made it
easy for Jones to register his
sixth win against five losses.
An error by shortstop Andre
Rogers in the third inning
paved the way for three un
earned Red runs and spoiled
