o School Crater High School By Daxlene Tomlinion The awards assembly was held May 24. New student body offers will be installed They are Bob Gardner, presi dent; Charlry Warren, vice president; Connie McDon- tOugh, secretary; Patti Straus, treasurer; and Harry Bartley, business manager. , Janet Kilbourne was named outstanding band member by Norman Carothers, band di rector. Art awards were given by Warren Holbrook to Marilyn Hixson, Clark Cutting, Connie McDonough, Mary I Savage, Nancy Clark, and Tim Prom. Nancy Clark was given the National Scholastic Art award. James Backen and Bill Rus sell presented the Jerome awards. Sharlette Hale as the best actress and Kent Randall as the best actor. Margaret Taylor was award ed the senior speaker award by Donald Lacy, speech in structor. The state champion extemporary speaking Award went to Doug Davis. Senior Mary Howard was announced as the Girl of the Year by Margaret Taylor, Girl's League president. Geraldine White, dean of girls, awarded medals to the following journalism students: Jane Crubbs, Arvella Prom, Delton Trautman, Evan Thum- bler and Darlene Tomlinson. The new intitiates for Quill and Scrool, a national honor society for student journalists, were announced as being Joan Skov, Melba Tucker, Marilyn Hixson and Dlanna Cummings, Doris Owens gave gifts to Arthur L. Straus, principal, and Geraldine White, dean of girls, from the Future Teach ers of America. The Senior class gave their 'advisor, Martha Boshears,. a gift. Yell squad awards were giv en to Melba Tucker, Rebecca Ferrell, Sandra Ghelardi, Don na Burnett, and Joan Skov, queen, by Nancy Purviance, advisor. Shirley Drysdale presented a pin to Jim Hays for placing highest in Crater in the an nual mathematics contest. Per ry LeCIerc was presented a chemistry award. , Sally Carr and Mary Jones wer;e presented the George Turnball yearbook award. Sherry Koellner received the Eric Allen Newspaper award. Both awards are by the Ore gon Scholastic Press ai; the University of Oregon. Janet Kilbourne and Doug Davis were awarded the Dan forth awards for citizenship. Basketball and junior vars ity awards were made by Lloyd Hoffine. Junior varsity basketball awards were made by Ron VanDolah. He also pre sented, the social . studies ward to Sandra Smith. Track awards were made by Edward Knapp who was in turn pre sented with a gift certificate from the track members. Frosh basketball awards were made by Don Miller and fresh man numerals were given out by Leonard Warren. . At the awards assembly sev eral scholarships were also given out. State college, scholar ship was given to Herschel Mack. Doris Owens received a scholarship from the. Future Teachers of America for use in preparation for a teaching career. Baccalaureate services were held May- 31 in the . Crater High gym. The Rev. Paul Kroon, of the Community church of Central Point, gave the invocation and benedic tion. The sermon, "Promote Me, O Lord," was given by the Rev. Jean Shelley of the Church of Christ in Central Point. The Crater High varsity choir, under the direction of Norman Carrothers, sang. Sophomore and junior class officers for next year have been elected. Next year sopho more class officers are Jan Bateman, president; Diane Rowe,, vice president; June Hopkins, secretary; Clayton Banry, treasurer., . Next year's junior class of ficers are Steve Howell .presi dent; Bryan von Buskirk, vice president; . Alison Pinkham, secretary; and Dave ' White, treasurer. CP Junior High School By Linda Myrick The eighth grade class of 127 will receive diplomas at promotion exercises today. H. P..Jewett, superinten- -:nt, will present them. The class has chosen Harry Meyers song, "Oregon Waltz," for the class song. Meyers won third place in the State Cen tennial song contest. The annual presentation of awards was held at an assem bly May 27. Mike Glines, stu dent body president, and oth er officers conducted the meet ing. Journalism- awards went to members of the school paper and annual staffs. Robert Ryan of the eighth grade received the award for outstanding shop student, and the 7-3 class was presented with the trophy for outstand ing shop class. In Home Eco nomics work, Arlene Hansen received the good grooming award. - Seventh and eighth grade track letters and awards were made, including 15 ribbons won in the recent AAU in competition with 220 boys. Boys earning ribbons were Swanson, Loren Cochran, Ken Stewart, Gary Wald, Pat Pep per, Dennis Ryerson, Danny Mainwaring, Charles Young, Larry Pepper, Darryl Sum- merfield, Forrest Young, D. They drove about 30 miles to the French border at La Cure, then when it began to rain turned "back toward Lake Geneva. On the way back the Chev rolet got a flat tire and its three Russian occupants join ed Gromyko in his long black sine. One Russian remained with the Chevrolet to arrange re pairs. Graham Addresses 65,000 in Brisbane Sydney-, Australia - (DPD -Evangelist Billy Graham ad dressed a crowd of 65,000 Sunday at Brisbane's Exhibi tion Ground. It was the larg est religious assembly in Queenslands history. After the meeting 2,500 persons stepped forward to make "decisions for Christ." In chorus, members of the seventh and eighth grade sex tets received special awards. Band awards were presented all band members. A special award went to Janet Pfaff, director of the Pep Ban and president of this year's ad vanced band. Outstanding science ' stu dents, Leslie Dewey, Judy Roberts, Robert Butcher, Carole Crenshaw, Tom Rozell, and Alan Bray, received sci ence awards.
