o o o Fair Commission Awards Contracts S?lem- (UPD -The State Fair Commission has awarded Larry Allen,'' San Francisco, the night revue contract for the next State Fair with a budget of $25,000. Last year's budget was $33,000. Christenson Brothers, Eu gene, was awarded the rodeo contract again. It calls for $15,500, a $500 increase from a year ago. A 20 per cent cut in live stock premiums will be in ef fect this year, according to Howard Maple, fair manager. He did this by linking up a certain arrangement of 13 "amino-acids" - the building-blocks of those proteins which are so essential to the formation of our bodies. The substance synthesized is a hor mone produced by the pitui tary gland, which lies, at the base of the brain just above the nose. . This hormone has to do with producing melanin, or the dark color in our skins. Peo ple who lack this hormone are albinos, with very white skins and colorless hair and eyes. Until a few years ago, most chemists would have thought that the synthesis of a large protein-like molecule i would be impossible. The men who isolated the hormone from the pituitary gland were Drs. A. B. Lerner and T. M. Lee, of Yale. The persons who worked with Dr. Hofmann -with an American Cencer So- Woolner, Haruaki Yajima, Gertrude Spuhler, Thomas A. Thompson and Eleanore T. Schwartz. Wetting The Bed In a recent article by Rinvik and Steel in a Scandinavian Journal is a report of a study in a hospital of 186 children who wet the bed. Later, 122 parents reported that 20 per cent of the children studied had recovered; th,ere was some improvement in 17 per cent, but the remaining 63 per cent were still bad off. Drugs were not much used,' and little was expected of them. The main treatment was the ancient one of getting the' child up at night to empty his bladder. Expert study of the bladders of the children showed abnor malities in nine out of 158. Twelve children were mental ly retarded. In 50 per cent of the cases, one or more members of the child's family had been bed wetters. Obviously, there is a hereditary factor. I have found bed-wetting in 5 per cent of my patients who had mentally disturbed relatives. The au thors doubted if it is much use to reduce the water intake of the .children in the afternoons. Certainly, these children should never be punished, and life should never be made more miserable for them than Road Commission to Open Project Bids Bids will be received June 16 at 9 ajn. by the state high way commission for several projects on the Myrtle Creek Ashland section of Pacific Highway in , Douglas, Jose phine and Jackson counties.
