Main ALL ARE WELCOME State Capitol: Gov. Hatfield, Staff Helpful To Reporters By DICK HUMPHREY UPI Correspondent Salem - (UPD - As state gov ernment becomes bigger and more complex, the problems of reporters in getting the news also becomes more com plicated. But Oregon agencies and officials, in general, have pretty free-and-easy attitude toward reporters. For instance, Gov. Mark Hatfield is usually available to reporters. He gives them the same priority as heads of state agencies and works them into his schedule as quickly as possible if he is busy. Hatfield has a listed tele phone number (Empire 3-7245) in Salem where he can Medford Students to Graduate at Milo Eight students from the Medford area were members of the fourth graduating class at Milo Academy near Can yonville recently. Hicks, legal counsel, also are available. Available by Radio In an emergency, reporters can locate the governor when he is traveling by car by us ing the state police radio net work. The calls are 5599 for the Cadillac and 5590 for the Rambler. Ex-Gov. Robert D. Holmes also had a listed home phone number, although he confess ed :that it gave him some trouble. He suspected that some of his late-night and early-morning calls were com ing from bars where there was a dollar bet about some obscure phase of state govern ment, but he answered any way. Both governors took this problem in stride. A lot of help is provided to capital reporters by public in formation specialists from various state, agencies who write news releases. But reporters are a skep tical bunch and usually have some questions. Court Clerk Helps One very helpful service is provided by longtime Su preme Court Clerk Jack Ser comb who briefs decisions of the supreme court which usually come out Wednesday mornings when the court is in session. The governor holds no reg ular press conference but works on the "general avail ability" technique. Cross tries to make sure Hatfield is avail able every day at 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. for news quer ies. During the legislation ses sion, reporters may approach senators and representatives at will when the two houses are in session, the only restric tion being that no one crosses in front of the rostrum. You have to infiltrate to the desk you want from the side or rear of the chamber. Some of thenv come from other buildings in the capitol mall just to chat and find out the latest. The coffee shop also doubles as a "Student Union" for stu dents of Willamette Univer sity, situated just behind the capitol building. So you often see young . people, cramming for political science exams sit ting next to state workers try ing to solve the practical problems of government. Sometimes they both look pretty grim.
