Sheriffs officers said Miss Dennis told them she had planned to go to Miss Watter son's room at 2 a.m. but for got to set her alarm clock and awoke at 4:40 a.m. Armed with the hatchet, she said, she crept into the sleep ing girl's room, quietly shut the door to the adjoining room and swung the hatchet. Miss Watterson's cries woke others in the freshman dorm itory. Ready To Pay Brown said Miss Dennis, a plump, sad-eyed brunette, at first was "pretty close-mouthed" except to demand a law yer. Later, however, she told a reporter, "I know what I've done and I'm going to pay for it. Whatever the court says." Both girls were freshmen at the two-year liberal arts college here. Officials said they once had roomed to gether. Miss Dennis was held with out bond on an open charge in the county jail at Asheville. Senators Offer Plan To Close Tax Loopholes Washington-UPD-Four .Dem ocratic senators today pro posed closing tax loopholes in four ways that would raise an extra S2V4 billion and help equalize the taxpaying burden, Their separate bill would abolish many "luxury" busi ness deductions, automatically withhold taxes on dividend and interest payments, repeal the credit and tax exclusive on dividend income, and slash the oil depletion allowance. The four sponsors are Sens Josep S. Clark (D-Pa.), Wil liam Proxmire (D-Wis.), Eu gene J. McCarthy (D-Minn.) and Paul H. Douglas (D-Ill.). lhey recommended using the additional revenue from these tax law changes to re duce the national debt, pro vide new public services and apply tax reforms benefiting high-bracket taxpayers and those hit hardest by excise levies. "The basic purpose of our bills is to make our tax sys tem fairer and more equita ble," the four Democrats said in a joint statement. "The principle which we are working to establish is that those with equal incomes should pay equal taxes in line with the pledge contained in the Democratic platform of 1956 that "the immediate need is to correct inequities in the tax structure." Proxmire authored a bill to withhold dividend-interest payments at the source, as is' done with wages and salaries. McCarthy is sponsoring the tax credit repealer and Doug las the oil depletion allowance revision. To Die Friday The governor's refusal means Starkweather, 20, must go to his death in the elec tric chair as scheduled short ly after 6 ajn. Friday. In a letter to the governor, Caril said she wanted to talk with her former boy friend so he could "at least confess to a minister that I am innocent." "I believe there is a chance he may tell the truth about what happened," Caril wrote. In a written reply, the gov ernor said such a meeting would be against state law. He also said he believed Stark weather, who was the state's chief witness against Caril, has had ample time to reveal any information he might have. Mother Among Victims Caril was convicted of help ing Starkweather in one of 10 killings the red-haired former garbage collector committed during his January, 1958, mur der spree. Starkweather later admitted killing another per son in December of 1957. The victims included Caril's ! mother, step-father and infant half-sister.
