Monday, May 18, 1959 Meet Set To Settle Bowl Issue Chicago - (CPD - Hardly any chance remained Saturday that the Big Ten would vote to save its agreement to play annually in the Rose Bowl at the final official balloting this week. The spring conference meet ing, opening at Michigan Thursday, will settle the issue in a vote either Thursday or Friday. Five schools have gone on record as opposed to a new bowl contract and five favor a new agreement. A 5-5 deadlock, however, would kill the proposal since the balloting technically will be on an amentment to con ference rules to permit par ticipation in the game and a tie would prohibit the amend ment. Once in the four previous votes on the Rose Bowl, which has been approved each time by the barest mar gin possible, the bowl agree ment was saved when one of the opponents, Minnesota, ab stained from voting rather than cast a "no" ballot. This time it was .unlikely any member would abstain. The presidents of the five schools whose faculties have voted against the bowl, Northj western, Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio State and Minnesota, have indicated to United Press International that they presume a "no" vote will be cast. '. Though there is strong sen timent among some confer ence powers favoring a new bowl agreement, should one of the "no" schools change its position, it would be liable, to requests for proof that the .faculty controls athletics. Atkinson Golf Victor Cornelius, Ore. - (CPD -Bob Atkinson Jr. of Portland can ned a 15-foot putt on the 18th hole to finish with a 147 and win the . Oregon Champion of Champions golf tournament Sunday. , Roy Wiggins of Oswego was second in the 36-hole event with a 148. Sid Mllligan, Eugene, had 149; Bill Prentiss of the home Forest Hills course had a 152 and Sam Cavalli of Portland had 153. Brooks Net Champion Corvallis 1DPD - Klamath Falls won the boys division and Lake Oswego took the girls title Saturday in the finals of the Oregon State high school tennis tournament. The Pelicans scored 12 points to win. The Oswego girls had 23 points. Neither school had an individual champion. Larry Brooks of South Eu gene won' a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Dave Oehling of Os wego for the boys single title. In the girls division, Mary Campbell of North Salem beat Oswego's Nancy Grant, 6-4, C-6, 6-4. Aaron stretched his hitting streak to 21 games and kept his batting average at .484 Sunday when the Milwaukee Braves beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 8 to 3. Hammering Hank broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run homer in the fifth inning and also contributed a single to Milwaukee's 14-bit attack. Such devastating clutch hit ting has the Braves 2Vz games in front in the National league race-by far their best position at this stage of a pennant race in three years. They trailed after 29 games by Wz in 1958 and by two games in 1957. Sticks With Pitcher But you could light a cou ple of matches on Gordon's ears because of the job the second-guessers are doing on him in the aftermath of the Cleveland Indians' Sunday doubleheader split with the Baltimore Orioles. Gordon came under fire for stacking with rookie reliever Jim Per ry in an 8-7, 11-inning open ing game loss even though the Indians rebounded to take the nightcap, 8-3, and retain their half-game lead in the Ameri can league. Gordon stuck with Perry, recent hero of a Cleveland victory over the New York Yankees, even though he served up a three-run ninth inning homer to Gus Trian dos that tied the score. Then, with relief ace Dick Brodow ski ready in the bullpen, he stuck with Perry again as he filled the bases with two hits and a walk and then walked Bill Klaus to force in the win ning run. Chisox Streak Ends The San Francisco Giants took over second place by beating the Cincinnati Reds, 9- 1, and the Pittsburgh Pi rates split with the Chicago Cubs in the other National league games. The Pirates won the first game, 5-4, but the Cubs came back to take the nightcap, 7-6. The Chicago White Sox beat the Washington Senators, 10- 7, after their eight-game winning streak was ended, 4-2, in the opener; the Yanks their, opener, 3-2, but were humiliated, 10-0, by the Kan sas City Athletics in the sec ond game and the Boston Red Sox beat the Detroit Tigers, 10-1, in other American league activity. A crowd, of 49,347 at Los Angeles saw Lew Burdette game and win nis sixm de cision with an eight-hitter. Battery mate Del Crandall, playing before Fullerton, Calif., townfolk, homered and had three singles for the Braves. Commit Seven Errors Perry's sloppy pitching was the climax of a real "married men vs. single men" sandlot game in which the Indians made three errors, the Orioles made four and only seven of 15 runs were earned. ' Vic Power drove in three runs with a single and triple in the nightcap. Andre Rodgers hit two homers and Willie Mays had a homer and a double to lead a JO-hit San Francisco attack that enabled Stu Miller to breeze to his second victory. Bill Mazeroski drove in three runs with two homers to help Pittsburgh's Vera Law to his third victory and Ernie COt 'CRETE C9 248 E. McAndrews Rd. Banks hit his ninth as Chi cago's Glen Robbie picked up his fifth triumph. Killebrew Homers Twice Pedro Ramos ended the White Sox' streak with a five hitter with the aid of homers by Jim Lemon and Reno Ber toia but Washington couldn't manage a sweep In the night cap although Harmon Kille brew belted his 13th and 14th homers. Bob Grim pitched a two hitter and Dick Williams slammed a three-run homer for the Athletics after the Yankees pulled out the open er with a three-run ninth inning rally. Dick Gernert hit a 'homer and three singles and Marty Keough also homered as the Red Sox snapped a five-game losing streak. ' Medford high will play a doubleheader at Klamath Tails tomorrow and Crater will be host to Ashland in a 4 pjn. single game at Cheney field at the south edge of Medford. ' Crater, Ashland and Klam ath Falls are out of the run ning for the conference and District 6 A-l titles but Med ford seeks to clinch the cham pionship. The Black Tornado can do this by defeating either Klamath Falls on Tues day or Crater in a game at Cheney field on Friday, after noon. Neither the Pelicans of KF nor the Comets of Crater would mind being spoiTers. Medford is 6-0 as leader of the. loop while Grants Pass is 6-2 in second place and would tie for the "crown should Klamath and Crater both spill the Tornado. The Cavemen of GP are finished with their regular season. Another Medford ambition is to stretch its victory total to 20 this week. The Tornado has 16 wins now and its rec ord includes a tie and five setbacks for the full season to date. Women's Golf On Thursday, May 14, the lady golfers participated in "medal play" and, due to rain, the Babe Zaharias tournament for the cancer fund, was post poned until Thursday, May 21. At that time, it is hoped that all lady golfers will partici pate in "medal" play and prizes will be awarded to win ners. Littler Wins In Arlington Hot Springs, Ark. - (UPD -Gene Littler fired a two- under-par 70 Sunday to win first money in ' the $22,000 Arlington Hotel Open golf tournament with 'a record-tying score of 270, but young Jim Ferree almost forced him into a playoff. Littler's top money brought his total to $20,641 for the year, fourth among . all the pros. " Ferree's 20-foot putt on the 18th green, that would have tied the score if it had drop ped, lipped the cup and stay ed up and Littler held a one stroke margin. 1 Littler's score, 18-under-par, equalled the 72-hole score of Bo Wininger in 1955, the first year the Arlington was held. MEDF0RDliJTraUNB SIPdDIfHTrS American Linen Defeats RV Dairy Maids 7-5, 18-1 Memorial stadium, Camp White -Led by the pitching and batting of Marge Grant and helped by home team miscues on the second night, the American Linen Whirl winds of Portland swept a two-game series here with the Rogue Valley Dairy Maids in the Northwest Girls' Major Softball league. vThe Linens tripped the Maids 7 to 5 on Saturday and swamped them 19 to 1 on Sunday. With the victories the Port land club took a 3-0 standing in the circuit. The Dairy Maids are now 2-2. Grant on Saturday drove in four runs with a homer, dou ble and fielder's option. She turned in a no-hitter in the game but the Maids collected its runs in the first inning when the Whirlwind twirler was wild. The scores were on four walks, a hit batter, a fielder's choice and four passed balls. Last night the Linen pitcher-slugger blasted five hits in GHOSTS COMING - Sleepy Edward is one of the leading trouble makers for the Iowa Colored Ghost Softball team which plays Camp White's baseball nine Thursday night at the Veterans Administra tion domiciliary stadium. Only the one game will be played by the Ghosts in Jackson county. Snead Winner In Own Tourney White Sulphur Springs, W. Va. (UPD Slamming Sam Snead, who turned in the most spectacular triumph of his fabled careei just nine days before his 47th birthday, dis closed today he wants to achieve two goals before he quits the golf circuit. 1. A U.S. Open champion ship. 2. The all-time 72-hole com petitive record. Snead said he felt like "a spring chicken" after posting superb rounds of 59 and 63 in succession to easily win his own Sam Snead Festival tour nament Sunday. They are be lieved to be the best 36 holes ever put back-to-back in com petitive golf. That finish gave the Slam mer a 21-under-par total of 259 for the 12th annual tour ney over his home courses at this Mountain resort. Eleven strokes back at 270 was Mike Souchak of Grossinger, N. McLoughlin Cops Meet McLoughlin Junior High school seventh and eighth graders won both division of a track meet with Central Point on Saturday. Eighth grade score was 63V to 49Vfc and the seventh grade totals were 64V to 21V2. Central Point eighth got seven first to McLoughlin's six but the Bulldogs were more successful in picking up second places, getting nine and tying for another. The Pointer eighth had three' double winners Pat Pepper with 140 feet in the javelin and 105 feet Vz inch in the discus. Vern Swanson with :09.6 in the high hurdles and :39.5 in the 330 yard run and Gary Wald with :08.2 in the 75-yard dash and :16 in the 150. CP relay team won in 48.4 with "Joe McCalvy, Swanson, Mike Glines and Wald running. Calkins Doubles Calkins took two Mac firsts with :15.3 in the low hurdles and 1:35 in. the 660. Other Bulldog victors were Jack Lowery 47-5 Vz in the shot put, Jim Dalbec 1-2Vz in the broad jump, Hammons 8-6 in the pole vault and Stansfield 5-3 in the high jump. Little Johnny Thomson of Boyertown, Pa., was the fast est week-end qualifier, aver aging 145.908 m.p.h. Saturday for the four-lap test to win the pole position. Thomson; a driver - farmer also roared to a one-lap qual ifying record of 146.532 ! m.p.h., shattering the mark of 146.509 hung up by Ed Elisian last year. Twelve cars were qualified Saturday on a cool and windy day, but only two made it Sunday as winds, then rain, cut into the six-hour time trial period. f Veterans Tony, Bettenhaus en and Johnnie Tolan figured in week-end crashes, which deiriolished their cars. Both escaped injury. Bowling Lanes, Butte Falls Nab Practice Frays Medford Bowling lanes tip ped Riddle5 to 4 and Butte Falls nicked Camp White 11 to 10 in 11 innings yesterday in practice 'games among Rogue Valley league baseball teams. Tie Bowlers got only two hits to six for Riddle but put over scores in four innings, including a winning run in the ninth, against the Doug las county foe. Gordon Owsley and Ron Perry got the Med ford hits. A Butte Falls the winning run came on an, error, a sacrifice by Edwin Ellis and single by Raymond Ab bott in the bottom of the sec ond extra canto. Camp White had the biggest inning with four counters in the eighth. Mullhollen hit three for four for BF, including a homer and two-baser and Hank Tygart and Ellis each creacked three for six.
