Helms, 77, of- the Upper Applegate, died Sun day. He was a forester for the U.S. for 16 years. Mr. Helms was born Sep. 4, 1881, in Jacksonville, and had lived all his life in south ern Oregon. His parents moved to Jacksonville in 1856, and pioneered in the Jackson ville and Applegate areas. He was married July 6, 1924, to Lillian H. Renard, who 'survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Alice Morris, Oakland, Calif.; and Mrs. Ardith Lewis, Medford; and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held in Conger-Morris Funeral home at 11 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Earl Best will of ficiate. Commital will be in Jacksonville cemetery. There are about 4,000 rail road bridges States. in the United Broadcasts Bounced From London To Boston Via Moon London - - Researchers at j the Jodrell Bank radio tele scope said today they had been able to bounce Brahms, Beethoven and Bach to Bos ton from the moon. The experiments were car ried out by Manchester Uni versity's Jodrell Bank experi mental arm and Pye Telecom munications Ltd. in demon strating that the moon can be used as a cheap relay station for world wide communica tions. 'Qualified Success' They said the experiment was a "qualified success" and said "most of the spoken words ' failed to reach the United States but the Three Bs of music made it." 'Prof. A.C.B. "Prof. Lovell sent various audio tones, short vocal mess ages, 'a Morse code message and some music," the Jodrell spokesman said. He said the U. S. Air Force's 86-foot "glorified aerial" suc cessfully picked up the audio tones, a few feeble words, the Morse messages and the music. ' Samples of moon-relayed trans-atlantic communications were:, -Audio tone: A sound like a long series of "dahs." -Spoken words: "Hello, America," "Jodrell Bank call ing the moon." No Boat Trouble -Morse code: "We'll have no trouble with fishing boats on this circuit." A reference to the recent U. S. search of a Soviet fishing boat accused of cutting trans-atlantic , tele phone cables. -Music: "Prof. Lovell and his assistants whistled and hummed but they finally re sorted to a gramophone," the spokesman said. Jodrell announced that Lo- vell's work will enable pri vate enterprise to develop the field. Pye's managing direct or, John Brinkley, said his firm will continue the research. The driver, Glen F. Hamp ton, Sacramento, Calif., was reported in good condition to day by Rogue Valley hospital attendants. He is suffering from a broken ankle, Young said. Treated and released Sunday were Hampton's sons, Glen, David and Rickie, and Bryon Rollins, Talent, an other passenger. The Hampton car apparent ly rounded a curve in the road too fast, hit a bank and rolled over two or three timeSj Young said. Davenport Fire Put Out by SOC Student ' Ashland - A fire in a daven port in the men's dormitory recreation room at Southern Oregon college was extin guished late Friday after noon before the fire depart ment was called, firemen re ported. 1 Firmen said O.. A. Ham mett, a student, saw the cushions of the davenport blazing when he entered the room, took them outside and extinguished them. He then called the fire department to report it. Firemen were dispatched to the scene, checked the building, but found no further evidence of fire. 'Jerry Howard Dillon, 19, of Gold Hill, received a 10 months suspended sentence for petty larceny. He had pleaded guilty to charges of taking a chain saw, gas can and crescent wrench from Clyde A. Dunkin, Gold Hill.
