Cavemen Champions in District 6 A-l Trade; Tornado Nabs 2nd Grants Pass High school, true to its favored role, won its second straight District 6 A-l meet at Grants Pass Sat urday and was more success ful in gaining state meet berths than anticipated. The Cavemen of the Cli mate city, bludgeoned out points against its four Southern Oregon conference rivals and collected almost half-13 of 23 spots from the district for the state encount er at Corvallis. Medford gave the Cavemen the strongest challenge with 116 tallies and will have fixth berths in the Oregon A-l hassle. Crater was third with 72 points in a meet fill ed with both surprises and some keen disappointments. Klamath Falls scored 59 and Ashland 17. The Comets of Crater will have three men in four events in the state event, Klamath will have two men in three contests and Ashland placed one entry for the Corvallis classic. Javelin Record Only one record fell during the day. John Burns, Crater, heaved the javelin 208 feet, 8 inc'iejr to defeat Glen Win nir, , Grants Pass, nation al r.rd holder, for the sec ond week in a row. Winning- Glendale Defeats EP Eagle Point-Glendale high completed its Rogue league baseball season undefeated by downing Eagle Point 3 to 0 here Friday night. ' ". The tangle was to a large extent a pitchers' Dattle with Floyd West of the Pirates per mitting one hit, fanning 13 and walking three and Jim Nease of Eable Point yielding four bingles, striking out 10 and giving three bases on balls. A couple errors in judg ment on the part of EP en abled the Glendale team to score. Bud Smart doubled and came home on an error in the first inning and Cliff Wor ley's pop fly double account ed for two runs in the third frame. Smart had doubles and a single in the game. Af ter the completion of the event yesterday, Winningham had a non-counting throw of 219-7. Bob Drace, Klamath Falls, was the top individual win ner of the meet. He qualified for state with three clear cut firsts in the high and low hurdles and the high jump. Double victor was Marvin Terry in the dashes. He took the 220-yarder after winning by photo finish in the 100. Grants Pass first place qual ifiers along with Terry were Ron Hoatson in the discus, Ken Simmons in the mile, Jim Armstrong in the half mile and Jay Hughes, who tied with Crater's Jim Eldred in the pole vault. The Cave men relay team of Ray Meek, Larry Johnson, Hugh Brown and Terry also took a first. Murray Wins Shot ' Getting Corvallis trips with seconds along with Winning- ham, who also qualified in low hurdles, for the Cavemen were Steve Bennett in the shot, Meek in the 100, John son in the 440-yard dash and Simmons in the half-mile.' For Medford Mike Murray won the shot put, Griggs and George Koch were one-two in the broad jump, Griggs was second in the 220, Ray Smith runner-up in the mile and the relay team of Don Peek, Phil Humphreys, Ron Reich and Griggs was second. : In addition to winning the javelin for Crater, Burns tied with Medford's Koch for sec ond in the high jump 5-11 and got the state berth on the basis of one miss to Koch's two at the previous height they cleared. Eldred gained state for the Comets in his pole vault tie and Glen Cote made it with second in the discus. Bob Voris was victor in the 440 fqr Ashland's only qual ifying spot. Bill Santo, Klam ath Falls, was second to team mate Drace. . 100 Close In the shot put Medford's Murray, who has been ill all week, made only one count ing put at 51-1. He had a few warm ups at around 55 feet and "scratched" on his first regular try at over 49. Steve Bennett's second place put was 48-10. The 100 was a closey with Terry and Meek nosing Peek of Medford in almost a dead heat at the tape. In the 440 GPs Johnson passed Med ford's Ron Reich, one of the favorites, on the home stretch for his second. Voris won handily in the fine time of hp ROYAL SCOTTS hp SCOTTS :51.7. In the 220 Medford's Grigg's was :22.8 behind Ter ry's :22.6. ' Grants Pass surprised with a one-two-three finish in the half-mile. Bob Rix, Medford, who re cently gave Armstrong a real battle, was fourth and Bruce Hill, who had Medford's best time in the event before a siege of illness, was fifth. Eldred and Hughes in the vault by going 12 feet turned in the best efforts of their careers. The favorite, Larry Holmes, Grants Pass, tied for third with Skip Bennett, Med ford, at 11-9. Roger Johnson, Medford's top miler, still troubled by shin splints, was in togs at the meet but did not enter his specialty. Medford's Tornado led in the early scoring in the meet but Grants Pass midway through the competition. (EPD Sam Snead shot on of the greatest com petitive rounds in golfing history Saturday a phe nomenal 59 to forge far out in front in the third round of ih Sam Snead Festival golf tournament. Slammin Sammy's 11 under par set a competitive record for a major tourna ment. He and six others had shot 60's in previous tourna ments. The sensational , round gave Snead a 54-hole total of 196 for the tournament named in his honor. Snead's brilliant round gave him an eight stroke lead at the end of the third round. E. J. (Dutch) Harri son of St. Louis, the leader at the. halfway mark, shot his third straight two-under-par 68, but this left him with a 204 apparently too far back to catch Snead to day in the final round of the $10,000 tournament. White Sox Top Yanks By 4-3 By United Press International The Chicago White Sox scored the tying run with the help of a three-base error by MicKey Mantle witn two out in the ninth inning and then went on to beat the New York Yankees. 4-3, Saturday for their eighth straight victory. The White Sox remained one game behind the Ameri can league leading Cleveland Indians, who downed the Bos ton Red Sox, 12-6, the Balti more Orioles beat the Detroit Tigers, 6-1, and the Washing ton Senators scored a 7-2 win over the Kansas City Ath letics in other games. The White Sox appeared beaten, 3-2, when Nelson Fox lofted a fly to Mantle for what would should have been the final out of the game But the Yankee center-fielder dropped the ball and Fox went all the way to third on the error. Fox scored the tying run when Sherman Lollar singled and the White Sox won the game in the 11th when Na tional league castoff Del En nis singled home Fox. Fox opened the 11th with a walk and moved to second on Jim Landis sacrifice. Turk Lown, who pitched the last two innings for the White Sox, gained his second win of the year while Art Ditmar, the third New York pitcher, suffered his third set back. Mantle doubled home a run to put the Yankees ahead in the seventh inning but struck out three times - the last time for the third out of the 11th inning. Rocky Colavito drove in four runs with two homers and a single to lead a 16-hit Cleveland attack that enabled Herb Score to win his third game. Score struck out nine and went the distance yield ing all Boston's runs in the fifth and sixth innings when he walked seven batters. George Strickland had three hits and Woodie Held, Vic Power, Russ Nixon and Billy Martin two each for the In dians. Hoyt Wilhelm, knuckleball ing National league castoff, won his fifth straight game for the Orioles, limiting the Tigers to nine hits and pitch ing hitless ball over the last three innings. Willie Tasby hit a three-run triple in the sixth inning to clinch the vic tory. Camilo Pascual pitched no hit ball for seven innings and wound up with a four-hitter for the Senators. Runnerup Eagle Point had 79 points in addition to gain ing seven qualifing berths in the state meet at Corvallis next Friday and Saturday. Following in third place in team scoring was Henley with 67, Myrtle Creek 64, Douglas 42, Illinois Valley 28, Suther lin 22 13, Rogue River 17, Glendale 12, Riddle 11 13, Oakland 4 13. and Glide 2. Eagle Point and Illinois Val ley accounted for five of the records while the tie was gained by Burrell Gober of Henley when he high jumped five feet, 11 inches to tie the old mark set by Dick Davis of Crater in 1956. Dan Slanaker and Mike Hanby, two scatbacks in the football season from Illinois Valley, eclipsed the old marks in the javelin and pole vault, Slanaker threw the javelin 194 feet six inches to better the old mark set by .Wayne Christian, - of Eagle Point, last year with a throw of 193 feet nine inches. Hanby vaulted an even 12 feet, the highest he has ever gone' to set a new standard Don Goyett of Crater set the old mark in 1956 at 11 feet seven and one-half inches. Bob Berryman of Eagle Point gained a come from be hind win in the 440-yard dash in record time of :52.9 seconds Chuck Swingle did hold the record with a :53.5 timing in 1958, Bill McClure, Steve Char ters, Bob Berryman, and Bill Turner combined to set a new standard in the 880 relay for Eagle Point with a 1:35.9 clocking. Myrtle Creek set the old mark last year at 1:36 .Turner was a double winner for the Pirates who were the host school in the meet. Turn er scooted to a new record in the 100 and also copped hon ors in the 220. Dillree .was a scant one inch behind Gober's record tying effort In the high jump and the results were just reversed in the high hurdles when Dill ree finished no more than four inches, in front of Gober in a time of :16. Gober fell to third In the lows behind second place finisher McClure of Eagle Point and Dillree, who won in the time of :21.25. Phoenix qualified one less than Eagle Point for the state meet by gaining six final berths as the first two finish ers in each event qualified for the state meet. Henley gained five berths, Myrtle Creek and Illinois Val ley three each, Douglas two, and Rogue River and Glen dale each qualified one.
