The Cavemen of the Cli
mate city, bludgeoned out
points against its four
Southern Oregon conference
rivals and collected almost
half-13 of 23 spots from the
district for the state encount
er at Corvallis.
Medford gave the Cavemen
the strongest challenge with
116 tallies and will have
fixth berths in the Oregon
A-l hassle. Crater was third
with 72 points in a meet fill
ed with both surprises and
some keen disappointments.
Klamath Falls scored 59
and Ashland 17. The Comets
of Crater will have three men
in four events in the state
event, Klamath will have two
men in three contests and
Ashland placed one entry for
the Corvallis classic.

Terry in the dashes. He took
the 220-yarder after winning
by photo finish in the 100.
Grants Pass first place qual
ifiers along with Terry were
Ron Hoatson in the discus,
Ken Simmons in the mile,
Jim Armstrong in the half
mile and Jay Hughes, who
tied with Crater's Jim Eldred
in the pole vault. The Cave
men relay team of Ray Meek,
Larry Johnson, Hugh Brown
and Terry also took a first.
Murray Wins Shot '
Getting Corvallis trips with
seconds along with Winning-
ham, who also qualified in
low hurdles, for the Cavemen
were Steve Bennett in the
shot, Meek in the 100, John
son in the 440-yard dash and
Simmons in the half-mile.'
For Medford Mike Murray
won the shot put, Griggs and
George Koch were one-two in
the broad jump, Griggs was
second in the 220, Ray Smith
runner-up in the mile and the
relay team of Don Peek, Phil
Humphreys, Ron Reich and
Griggs was second.
: In addition to winning the
javelin for Crater, Burns tied
with Medford's Koch for sec
ond in the high jump 5-11 and
got the state berth on the
basis of one miss to Koch's
two at the previous height
they cleared. Eldred gained
state for the Comets in his
pole vault tie and Glen Cote
made it with second in the
discus.
Bob Voris was victor in the
440 fqr Ashland's only qual
ifying spot. Bill Santo, Klam
ath Falls, was second to team
mate Drace. .
100 Close
In the shot put Medford's
Murray, who has been ill all
week, made only one count
ing put at 51-1. He had a few
warm ups at around 55 feet
and "scratched" on his first
regular try at over 49. Steve
Bennett's second place put
was 48-10.
The 100 was a closey with
Terry and Meek nosing Peek
of Medford in almost a dead
heat at the tape. In the 440
GPs Johnson passed Med
ford's Ron Reich, one of the
favorites, on the home stretch
for his second. Voris won
handily in the fine time of

Grants Pass surprised with
a one-two-three finish in the
half-mile.
Bob Rix, Medford, who re
cently gave Armstrong a real
battle, was fourth and Bruce
Hill, who had Medford's best
time in the event before a
siege of illness, was fifth.
Eldred and Hughes in the
vault by going 12 feet turned
in the best efforts of their
careers. The favorite, Larry
Holmes, Grants Pass, tied for
third with Skip Bennett, Med
ford, at 11-9.
Roger Johnson, Medford's
top miler, still troubled by
shin splints, was in togs at
the meet but did not enter
his specialty.
Medford's Tornado led in
the early scoring in the meet
but Grants Pass midway
through the competition. The
score favored GP just 88 to
85 after nine contests but
the Cavemen pulled away as
additional events came in.

The Chicago White Sox
scored the tying run with the
help of a three-base error by
MicKey Mantle witn two out
in the ninth inning and then
went on to beat the New York
Yankees. 4-3, Saturday for
their eighth straight victory.
The White Sox remained
one game behind the Ameri
can league leading Cleveland
Indians, who downed the Bos
ton Red Sox, 12-6, the Balti
more Orioles beat the Detroit
Tigers, 6-1, and the Washing
ton Senators scored a 7-2 win
over the Kansas City Ath
letics in other games.
The White Sox appeared
beaten, 3-2, when Nelson Fox
lofted a fly to Mantle for
what would should have been
the final out of the game
But the Yankee center-fielder
dropped the ball and Fox
went all the way to third on
the error.
Fox scored the tying run
when Sherman Lollar singled
and the White Sox won the
game in the 11th when Na
tional league castoff Del En
nis singled home Fox. Fox
opened the 11th with a walk
and moved to second on Jim

Turk Lown, who pitched

6-A2 track meet on the South
ern Oregon college track with
90 points yesterday afternoon.
Runnerup Eagle Point had
79 points in addition to gain
ing seven qualifing berths in
the state meet at Corvallis
next Friday and Saturday.
Following in third place in
team scoring was Henley with
67, Myrtle Creek 64, Douglas
42, Illinois Valley 28, Suther
lin 22 13, Rogue River 17,
Glendale 12, Riddle 11 13,
Oakland 4 13. and Glide 2.
Eagle Point and Illinois Val
ley accounted for five of the
records while the tie was
gained by Burrell Gober of
Henley when he high jumped
five feet, 11 inches to tie the
old mark set by Dick Davis of
Crater in 1956.
Dan Slanaker and Mike
Hanby, two scatbacks in the
football season from Illinois
Valley, eclipsed the old marks
in the javelin and pole vault,
Slanaker threw the javelin
194 feet six inches to better
the old mark set by .Wayne
Christian, - of Eagle Point,
last year with a throw of 193
feet nine inches.
Hanby vaulted an even 12
feet, the highest he has ever
gone' to set a new standard

biggest personal dual of the
day, by virtue of their compe
tition in the high jump, high
hurdles, and low sticks.
Dillree .was a scant one inch
behind Gober's record tying
effort In the high jump and
the results were just reversed
in the high hurdles when Dill
ree finished no more than
four inches, in front of Gober
in a time of :16.
Gober fell to third In the
lows behind second place
finisher McClure of Eagle
Point and Dillree, who won in
the time of :21.25.
Phoenix qualified one less
than Eagle Point for the state
meet by gaining six final
