Northern Pacific Railway 1959 earnings should be around $4 to $4.25 a share, against $3.68 in 1958, Abra ham & Co. estimates. ' Twining Given Recovery Chance Washington - (UPD - Gen. Nathan F. Twining, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was given a good chance to day to recover from lung cancer. The 61-year-old general, who underwent surgery Tues day at Walter- Reed Army Medical Center, was expected to leave the hospital in three or four weeks and return to his defense post a few weeks after that. The Defense Department announced Thursday that a cancerous tumor had been found on a portion of Twin- ing's left lung removed by surgeons. It said there was no evidence of cancer in other areas of the chest. "This is a single area," said Brig. "Gen. James H. Forsee, chief surgeon at Walter Reed. "It has all been removed and we thing his prognosis (out look for recovery) is a good one considering the fact that this is cancer." Earlier, Clifford Moffitt, Salem, was named principal of South Eugene High school. The department ordinarily has four supervisors of sec ondary education. It now has I only one, Dale Skewis. John S. Conway; formerly a super visor, is now director of sec ondary education. Local Student Gets Award at University Eugene-Donald W. Robin son, senior in journalism at the University of Oregon, has been awarded a $50 Harpham prize for outstanding work dealing with- international subjects and world peace. Pat Newcomb, the friend and public relations represen tative who accompanied them on their honeymoon, said they spent most of Thursday with "accountants and tax people" preparatory to their three to four-month, trip abroad. After a honeymoon yacht cruise, Miss Taylor is sched uled to begin work on a movie pleted visits to Eastern Ore gon college and Oregon Tech nical institute on the previous day and will continue on the higher education survey until the end of next week, accord ing to Dr. Stevenson. ILLINOIS VALLEY Annual Dinner Scheduled By RUTH RAUSCH Cave Junction State Grange Master Elmer Mc Clure has accepted the invita tion to appear on the panel of guest speakers scheduled for the anual dinner of the Illi nois Valley Chamber of Com merce, which is to be held Saturday, May 23, at the Deer Creek Grange hall. Other speakers on the panel include Arnold Ewing of the Northwest Timber Products association , and representa- times of the National Forest Service from either the Re gional office or the Siskiyou office. The annual affair, which will also serve as a booster meeting for,, the Selma-to-Gold Beach road, will be at tended by delegations of the Selma-to-Gold Beach Road association headed up by co- presidents Robert Vaneer of Gold Beach and Frank Amer of Selma. The last meeting for the Spring term of Mrs. Eldon Durham's Baton Twirlers was combined with an entertain ment program for the mothers last Friday. On June 15, there will be a meeting of the mothers to organize a summer session for the Twirlers group. Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Cook have returned' from a month's trip which took them to Iowa, with stops in Wyoming and Montana, visiting friends and relatives. The joint installation for the newly-elected PTA offi cers of the Kerby, Evergreen and Illinois Valley high schools will be . held at the high school on Wednesday, May 20 at 8 p.m. During the brief business meeting preceding the instal lation ceremonies, the impor tant issue of holding joint PTA meetings once a month each school having a turn at being host school, will be voted on. x Since this proposition has resulted from the expressed desires of the parents, i is hoped there will be a good representation of parents to carry out the vote. The final sessions of the advance classes in Red Cross work are temporarily post poned. The date of resuming the work will be announced later. Tibbs defended himself in the paternity suit brought by Leah J. Conner, 26, Salem, who asked Superior Court here to adjudge the "World's champion cowboy and bronc rider" as the father of her child, Roberta. Miss Conner, a Umatilla Indian, once was queen of the Pendleton Round up. The cowboy said he never dated Miss Conner, and denied that he had ever given her money for the child's support.
