Thursday, May 14, 1959 Hayden Assured Panama Passage Los Angeles (UPD The for mer wife of. actor Sterling Hayden has stipulated in court she will not interfere if Hayden sails his schooner through the Panama Canal on his court-defying cruise with their four children. "Nothing could be more dangerous than a passage around the Cape Horn in any season," Mrs. Betty De Noon Hayden said. . She indicated Wednesday she had information that Hay den would travel around Cape Horn if she failed to give her permission for passage through the canal without any hindrance. Hayden took his four chil dren, aged 6 to 10, aboard his 98-foot schooner Wanderer last January and sailed to the South Seas despite a court order forbidding him to take them along on the year-long film-making voyage. CENTRAL POINT Tribute Paid to Jewett By DORIS HUGHES Central Point - Friday the Jewett Elementary school paid tribute to H. P. Jewett, retiring superintendent of district 8C schools. The cele bration, which also included lunch, was held at the school from 11 aJn. to 12:30 p.m. Each of the 12 class rooms has written a special song in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Jewett. George Johns, . principal, acted as master of ceremonies Mrs. Jeanne Carothers, music director, composed a special song which students of the school sang. The Central Point Elemen tary and Junior High school will present a concert at 8 o'clock tonight, in the Junior High school gymnasium. Both the beginners band and. the junior high school band will perform under the direction of Harry G. Meyers. Mrs. Mary Gardner is chorus di rector. Also giving special numbers will be the "Hi-los" and the "Singing Satellites." A record crowd attended the Central Point Elementary and Junior High school open house which was held recent ly. The number attending was 1,858. More than 500 attended the band concert which was given later. During the band concert, the school principal, Charles A. Meyer, was pre sented a bronze dsk set. Mak ing the presentation was Janet Pfaff, band president. Mrs. Ben McManama, pub licity chairman, announced that the Central Point Home Extension unit will meet May -2.0 at 10:30 ajn. at the home of Mrs. Maynard McKay, 360 North Fifth St., Central Point. It will be the last meeting of the season. The lesson will be on hair styling. Maxine Hammond from Holland's Studio of Beauty will give the demonstration. A report on the convention which was held in Corvallis last week will be given by Mr. George Dunphy and Mrs. Wesley White. Child care will be available at the home of Mrs. Eunice Jones, 235 laurel st. ; Also at the meeting, offi cers will be installed. New officers for the unit are Mrs. Charles Klutsenbeker, chair man; Mrs. George Dunphy, vice chairman; Mrs. Don Fab er, - secretary; Mrs. Wesley malt, treasurer. Members of the Crater Grandmothers club who at tended the Centennial Tea given by the Medford group recently were Mrs. O. T. The humorist was taken to the institution near here on the advice of psychiatrists who found him "quite dis turbed" and in.need of "long- term" mental care. Winters, master of a multi tude of voice characterizations and comic facial expressions, had been - showing siens oJ strain and recently joined Al coholics Anonymous.
