6 MAIL TRIBUNE, MtdforJ, Or. A Thursday, May 7, 1959 Family Council Frank B. - She makes a fool of herself. Adele B.-I make out better than he does. Frank B.-I am 18 and my sister, Adele, is 16. She is verv immature for her age and I am trying to help her grow up. One of Adele's problems is that the is very shy. She won't open her mouth at parties, but you can t shut her up at nome T have tried to make her un derstand that she has to learn nmthmz about sports and world events so she'll have something to talk about with boyi. Shell rah-rah at foot- tall games, but when I try to explain something to her she doesn't even listen. - Adele complains to my par ents when she hasn't any date, but she doesn't do any thinf to help herself. She wears her hair in a way that makes her look like a nut -real long and stringy - and won't do anything about that either. AdeU B. - Look who's talk ing! He's the one who looks like a nut. He thinks he looks like Rock Hudson or some body and spends hours trying to comb his hair with a cer tain wave, but he's afraid to let anyone cut it and doesn't get a haircut until it drips over his collar. I'm doing all right without his help. I have more dates than he had at my age. I also mal.e out better at parties. One of his stupid friends told him I'm too quiet, but this particular boy was just im possible to talk to. He kept acting like a clown. I like tmv who have a little dignity. The worst of it is that my parents pay attention to Frank. They believe every thing he tells them about me. Then they nag me, but every- ' thing he does is okay. The Council: It is a char acteristic of adolescents to be terribly critical - basically of themselves. This self - criti cism is often so overwhelming that the immediate family is forced to share it. - Two or more teenagers in a family can make hash of one another when they get start ed. They see every fault in the world in one another and they are not objective enough to see any assets. Parents are sometimes in clined to pay a little too much heed to such criticisms. Per haps they give the elder child hearing because they feel he has more judgment and they want to help the younger with any social problems - particularly if she is a girl. However, this is an error, The girl or boy should be en couraged to talk directly with the parents if she or he has problems. The older brother or sister should be kept out of the picture. Frank, for ex ample, may be projecting some of his own difficulties on to Adele. It certainly con 'fuses the picture. Frank and Adele are so close in age that it is hard for them to find separate cir cles of friends, but they should make an effort to do exactly that. Each will have a greater sense of freedom and will be able to develop social ly in his own individual way. When they are older and less critical of themselves they will find that they see fewer faults In one another. They will also be more tol erant of the shortcomings they do see, for they will recognize that others aren't perfect either. At that time they will be able to be help ful to one another in broad ening their social relation ships. (Copyright 1959 General Features Corp.)
