Many boats, from canoes to sailboats, which were not oric- inally designed for propulsion by an engine, may be adapted to take an outboard motor. This Can be done with the use of outboard brackets, available in local marine hard ware stores. The brackets can be clamped to the side of a canoe or bolted to the tran som of a rowing skiff or sail boat. Peak Performance However, before motorizing your boat, make sure it can safely use the motor you in tend to purchase. Is the boat built by a recog nized boat builder and will it give peak performance when using recommended horse power? If you are a water-ski enthusiast is the hull recom mended for that sport? Another factor to consider is material construction. Whether the boat is built of wood, metal or fiberglass, has the material been proved dur able for your locale? Is the transom strong enough to hold two motors if desired? Freeboard, the height that extends above the water, is something else that should not be overlooked. Big craft carry more freeboard, not because it is necessary to keep afloat, but for the large waves that are encountered in rough weather. Flooding Miniminixed Outboard motors have 18 inch and 20-inch motor drive shafts. The longer shaft per mits a higher transom cut-out, thereby minimizing chances of flooding by a following-sea. Most boats built today have a self-bailing motor well which allows any water ship ped to run right out. Also there are outboards manu factured that have automatic power bailing. Last summer, this reporter witnessed a marine accident and took part in the rescue while sailing on Long Island Sound. Six fishermen, cram med into a 12-foot rented row boat with an outboard motor, were swamped and overturn ed during a blow. Valuable Lessons Luckily, all were saved. Bat the accident taught some val uable lessons. First, there should not have been six peo ple in the boat. The transom was low in the water and there was little freeboard due to the overcrowding. Second, the motor was too powerful to handle properly. Finally, these Izaac Waltons knew nothing of boatman ship. To carry the more pow erful outboard motors on the market today and to provide added versatility and stabil ity, many outboard boats of fered this year have greater beam than previously. With -the greater and more varied use that today's outboard boats are undergoing, this de velopment follows the general build-up in average boat lengths during recent years. Cruiser Rise Rapid A boat that has risen rapid ly in the past few years in the outboard cruiser. Its popu larity has grown because motor manufacturers are com ing out with electric starters and remote control steering devices. Today's new motors are made so that there are fewer maintenance cares for the owner and quieter, more ver satile operation. In most med ium and high horsepower motors, for instance, shearer pins are replaced by slip clutches, thereby eliminating the frustrating job of chang ing sheared pins. And alum inum cowlings are being re placed with fiberglass, which serves a dual purpose. Fiber glass will not oxidize, as alum inum does. Also it absorbs sound, making for a quieter motor. Special District Elections Voted Salem - UPD - The House Tuesdav passed a bill regu lating elections in 19 differ ent types of special districts in Oregon. Irrigation and drainage dis tricts would be excluded from the bill. The other 19 special dis-i-;cts would hold elections on the third Friday of May to elect directors.
