My old friend. Dr. Harold S. Diehl, of the American Cancer Society, recently told me about the p r o b a bility that viruses cause at least some forms' of cancer. We know already that a dozen types of ani mal cancers jsij are caused by Dr Alvsre viruses. Many years ago, it was found that a certain type of leukemia (a cancer-like disease) in animals ! was produced by a virus. So i far, some 30 types of viruses have been identified. Eighty have been found in the last 10 ' years, and new ones are now being found at the rate of one a week. Research work-1 ers are now unding more viruses than they can find dis- i eases to go with them-hence the name "orphan viruses." As Dr. Diehl says, if only the research workers should find now that certain viruses are responsible for some types oi human cancer,, the next step would be to prepare vac cines. Then we could perhaps keep people from getting can cer, or we could help people to stop the growth of a cancer when they get one. During April the Cancer So ciety plans to raise funds to support more than 1,300 able scientists who are working in this field of research. Cer tainly, everyone should help support the splendid work be ing done by the American Cancer Society. Its offices are at 521 West 57th St., New York 19, N.Y. Cancer in Childhood Many of us, even physicians, think of cancer as a disease of the older years, but actual ly, cancer is common in chil dren. In the Statistical Bul letin of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, I find a note that cancer accounts for one out of every four deaths in children between the ages of four and 14 years. It causes more deaths among children Yreka Teachers To Get Pay Bcosl Yreka - Teachers' salaries at Siskiyou Union High school will be increased 100 will be increased S100 the next school year and principals' pay S600 across-the-board, according to a decision made last week by the Union High school board of trustees. In its acute form it is a terrible dis ease, wrhich usually progresses rapidly. Cancers of the nerv ous system, and particularly the brain, constitute the sec ond most important . group.
