ALL THAT MEAT Muncie, Ind. - (UPD - Police are seeking thieves who are riding high on the hog-specifically, a 27,000-pound truck load of pork. APPROVES POSTAL BILL Washington -(UPD- A House post office subcommittee has approved a bill to stave off a scheduled 100 per cent in crease in postage on mail of odd sizes or shapes. The mini mum rate on these mailings now is - slated to climb from 3 cents to 6 cents May 1. The bill would revise the rate to 3V& cents. . ' MORE BENEFITS Washington (UPD - A Sen ate labor subcommittee has approved, with technical changes, a bill -increasing benefits under the railroad I retirement system. APPLEGATE VALLEY Trees Planted at Church By MAUDE ZIEGLER Applegate Valley - Through a county-wide Grange tree dis tribution program, the Ruch Community church has re ceived over 100 young trees which are being planted on the church grounds and at the parsonage, according to the pastor, the Rev. Earl Best Port Orford cedars have been planted across the front of the church property, with Chinese Elm and Russian olive trees alternating at the sides of the plot. Redwood trees also will be added. The ladies' missionary group is an active organization of the Ruch church, and on Sun day quilts and clothing that have been made were on dis play in the basement. Much of the clothing is dis tributed locally to needy fam ilies, and surplus items are sent to mission centers in United States. A number of women of both Ruch and Pro volt churches went to Cave Junction Thursday to attend a ladies' missionary rally. Youth fellowship meetings at Ruch are held at 5 p.m. on Monday now, and include supper and baseball games. Choir practice is held at 7 p.m. on Thursday. Louis (Pappy) Jones, who has been in Vallejo, Calif., for some time receiving medical treatment, suffered a serious heart attack recently, accord ing to word received by friends. There was not time to remove him to a hospital, and firemen were called, who applied an inhalator, it was learned. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Tracy of Gold Hill are new residents of the community, Tracy hav ing charge of the B R ranch for C. D. Kendall. Mrs. Tracy's children, Carol and Burrell McCall, are enrolled in the Ruch school in the sixth and seventh grades. Mr. and Mrs. George Jones, who formerly were on the B R ranch, have leased the Glenn Travis home near Copper. Mr. and Brs. Bert Kenyon of Medford have purchased the Madeline mining claims 1 and 2 in the Beaver creek area from Mr. and Mrs. Vance Howlett of Medford. Mr. and Mrs. Kenyon expect to use the property as a vacation spot. Mrs. Charles Williams has resumed employment with the Copeland lumber company in Medford. , Mrs. Glenn Travis was elect ed president of Ruch Parent Teacher association at the April 3 meeting. Other offic ers elected were George Red head, vice president; Mrs. Stanley Larson, secretary; and Mrs. Harlan Cantrall, treasur er. -. A wide variety of questions from school patrons on ef fects of consolidation were asked Elliott Becken, assistant superintendent of Medford schools, who spoke at the meeting. The problem of "how can my boy participate in after school activities when he has to be home to milk the cows?" or "Is this type of consolida tion going on throughout United States, and does it cen tralize or decentralize popula tion?" were typical questions discussed. The 4-H Cooking club in the Ruch area has become so pop ular with youngsters that with an enrollment of 14 members, the club has been divided into two groups. Mrs. Fred Straube is leader of the project and two meetings a month are held at her home. Miss Alena Mekenen, coun ty health nurse, visited Thompson creek and other areas of the valley Wednes day, in preparation for the pre-school clinics to be held in Applegate and Ruch schools May 7. Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Kendall, who reside at their B M Lazy ranch on upper Applegate,, left last week on a trip to the! Grand Canyon and Phoenix, Ariz. Mr. and Mrs. Ted Adams, who have resided at Ruch for several years, are making their home in Medford. With the appearance of first warm days, conversations drift to trips and the popular Ashland loop driVe which opens in early summer. Some who have visited in the Swiss Alps say that this drive into the Siskiyous compares favor ably with the Alps. Local people are having their share of being photo graphed in the Mail Tribune, and the latest of these, uni dentified, were Mr. and Mrs Frank Mitchell, who appeared on the April 7 front page. Mrs. Henry Mapston was elected chairman of Upper Applegate extension unit at a meeting at the Grange hall Wednesday. Mrs. Glenn Bailey was elected vice chairman, and Mrs. Claud Williams and Mrs. Forbes Brown were re-elected secretary and' treasurer. The unit will join the new Apple- gate extension unit in holding a spring festival at the Apple gate school gym April 25th. Following W e d n e s day's meeting, the group was invited to the new home of Mrs. Glenn Travis for coffee. Mr. and Mrs. Travis have purchased the former Dutton home near Cameron bridge from Curtis Gearhardt. Bill Shannon, band teacher inhe high school at Clover dale near Portland, was an overnight guest of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Shannon Tuesday. Miss Shirley Dunlap of Medford, secretary for the city police department, spent Sun day here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Marion Dunlap. Other guests included Dun lap's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Dunlap, of . Williams creek. Lawrence Dale Dunshee re turned Monday to the Naval base at San Diego after spend ing two weeks here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Dunshee. Lawrence had com pleted basic training at San Diego. The seventh and eighth grade room of Ruch school will present a Centennial pageant at the school gym Friday, April 17, at 8 p.m. The pageant is written by eighth grade students, who also are arranging most of the scenes and stage property. A choral group will accompany the players, who will portray Oregon history. In preparation for daily de livery of the Mail Tribune on Route 1 out of Jacksonville, which includes the Ruch-Pro-volt area, mail boxes are be ing put up at subscribers' homes. - Rural Reflections: When the Farm Editor says that sit ting on the front porch has gone out of date he should have been in the valley Satur day afternoon when Charley Williams, free from his duties at Crater Lake Motors, was enjoying his front porch midst neighborhood activity. On the front hillside the wild flower seekers were busy, and to the rear was the boom of the Corson land leveling operation.
