' Wayne Cowan of Hedrick in the discus and 150-yard dash and John Champ of Crater in the high jump and high . Bardies were 'double winners for their respective teams. Champ also dead-heated with ' Scott Eaton of Hed rick in the low hurdles for first place. School records for the Hornets were Fred Thomp son's 136 feet 1 inch in the javelin, Cowan's 120-4 in the discus and the :15.6 which' Eaton had along with Champ in the low barriers. Unofficial Timet An unofficial watch across the field from the start and finish of the race caught John son in 4:36.3, Hill in a bril liant 1:58, Reich in :53.2 and Norton in 3:27.2. Grants Pass gained its first places in the 440-yard, two mile and mile relays, the shuttle hurdles, the pole vault and the javelin. Glen Win ningham, Grants Pass, state A-l champ in the spear toss, was over 200 feet in winning his specialty yesterday but short of the 207-feet 5-inch mark he set last year in the Rogues. His distance was 205-9. The Cavemen of GP were :45 nat in the 440, 8:25.8 in the two-mile, 3:33.5 in the mile and :36 even in the shut tles. Lee Holmes won the pole vault at 12 feet for GP. Medford high jump team of George Koch, Jerry Shultz and Walt Ayres came within three-fourths, of an inch from pequalling that relay mark Koch and Shultz went 6 feet each and Ayres 5-6 for a 17-6 aggregate. Nored Victor Larry Nored won the discus for the Tornado with 140-3 Medford's 880 relayers were clocked in the fine early season time of 1:32.9. Broad jumpxmark for Medford was 58-938. Marshfield totaled 137-4 in the shot. Grants Pass had one second place, a tie for second, five thirds, two fifths and a tie for fifth to go along with its firsts. The Cavemen were helped by a new rule this year which permitted the ef forts of two participants of each school to qualify for points in the javelin, pole vault and discus. Medford had seconds in three events and a third and a fourth. The Tornado was hurt by lack of, entry in the polt vault because of the cur rent surge of flu which weak ened just about all of the participating squads. Mile Relay Thrilling The Tornado failed to place in the javelin and came in second in the shot put which it was favored to win. Mike Murray, who has put the shot over 58 feet so far this spring, managed only one good throw of 48-10 for the Tornado yes terday. Jerry Larsen of Marshfield had a best put of 53-2ii. x The mile relay had the most thrilling finish. Larry Johnson had the lead for Grants Pass on the final lap. He was passed as he came into the backstretch by Ker man Bennett of Crater and Ron Reich of Medford. Then Reich passed Bennett only to have Johnson, with a great kick at the finish, break the tape first. Perhaps the top surprise of the day was the double win by Angelo Coia, a football halfback, in both sprints Coia upset the favored Willie White in the 100-yard dash in 9.9, run against a slight wind. and then easily took the 220 in 21.7. Bobby Staten scored an even bigger upset by taking the 440 from Cal's Jack Yer- man in 47 seconds flat, which tied the meet record. The San Diego sophomore then went on to take the low hurdles in 23.5 seconds. The other double win of the day was scored by USC's Charlie Dumas who won the high hurdles in meet record time of 14.2 and easily cap tured the .high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 8 inches. California . did not take first place until the eighth event when Jerry Siebert won the 880 in 1:57.6 as expected. The Bears came back several events later with another first in the discus with Wayne Crow winning at 158 feet, 6 inches. The Bears also captured the two mile run easily as Alan Gaylord won in 9:21.1 and took the mile relay in 3:14.3 to set a meet record. Thanks to the McKeever twins, the Trojans swept the shot put. Marlin won the event at 55 feet 634 inches and Mike was second at 53 feet, 3. , . It was Southern California's 17th straight meet win over California and 82nd dual meet in which they have gone undefeated. PIONEERS WINNERS Salem (UPD Lewis and Clark defeated -Willamette, 6-5, in a Northwest Confer ence baseball game here Fri day, scoring four runs at the top of the ninth inning. It was the first conference game of the season for both schools, Gerry Stickley paced the Pioneec attack with, a home run and a single for three RBIs in four times up. Dick Hamada hit a home run with none aboard for Willamette in the third. , best high jumps and Bob Drace and Bob Lewis, Klam ath Falls', and John Burns of Crater each cleared 5-11 Crater's and Klamath's sec ond place tie in the relay event was at 17.4, two inches back of Medford. A question arose, how ever, as to whether the Cave men retired thet , Kiwanis trophy. There was contention that the meet must be won three consecutive times for permanent possession. Chicago' -40PB- Bob Ander son, aided by Sammy Taylor's four runs batted in, pitched the Chicago Cubs to a 6-1 triumph over" the Los Angeles Dodgers Saturday, scattering six hits, before a crowd of 12, 288 at the delayed opening day contest in 42 - degree weather. Don Drysdale, the Dodgers' starter, struck out seven men before he was replaced by Art Fowler after the Cubs' four run fifth inning. Rookie George Altman started the uprising with his second single of the game and advanced on Ernie Banks' sacrifice. Walt Moryn walked and rookie Earl Averill drove in one run with a double. Dale Long was walked in tentionally and, after Bobby Thomson forced Moryn at home, Taylor came through with a two-base liner down the left field line to clear the bases. The Cubs tallied twice in the fourth after Moryn and Averill singled. Both advanced on Drysdale's wild pitch and Moryn was safe at home when catcher John Roseboro drop ped Don Zimmer's throw after Thomson's grounder. Taylor singled to score Averill. Chicago made four inning ending double plays to stifle the Dodgers' attack, and only one Los Angeles runner got past second base, Drysdale on his third inning homer for the Dodgers only run. The win was Anderson's first over the Dodgers, and gave him a major league rec ord of four wins and four losses. Last year, when he won three games, he suffered two of his three defeats .against the Dodgers. Net Men Break Even For Medford Tennis players for Medford high broke even on a road jaunt this week end, downing South Eugene 7 to 0 on Fri day and losing a 4 to 3 nod to Springfield' yesterday. Grizzly (two-run homers by Bob John son here Friday as Crater high nudged Ashland 6 to 5 in a Southern Oregon confer ence baseball tussle. Crater also won the non loop second game 3 to 1 with a four-hit barrage in the third inning and two-hit chucking by Wayne Allen. In other Friday action in the circuit Grants Pass won a counting game from Klam ath Falls 4 to 3 and took a kings-x second game, also, 6 to 1. The Comets 'of Central Point broke a 4-all knot in the conference scrap with runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Bill Anhorn of Cra ter and Alan McKinnis of Ashland each hurled seven hit ball. Anhorn fanned 12 batters and walked three. Mc Kinnis registered nine strike outs and issued four bases on balls. Three-Run Triple Jerry Korbol's triple drove a run in the first inning to give Crater a lead in the game. But, Pete Stemple walked and Bob Johnson roundtripped in the same can to for a 2 to 1 Ashland jump. Gary Johnson then tripled in three runs. Ashland deadlocked the fracas again in the third inn ing when Stemple doubled and Bob Johnson slammed his second home run. The Comets' fourth inning marker was on a walk to Pfaff, a single by Gary John son and Wayne Allen's squeeze bunt. In the sixth Korbol singled and went to third on a two-base miscue. He tallied on a muff of Loyal Higinbotham's ground ball. Thown Out at Plate The Grizzlies threatened to tie in the bottom of the sixth frame. Bob Johnson walked and Phil Tucker safetied. Johnson tried to come all the way from second base on- Jim Doster's hit but outfielder Gary Johnson threw him out at the plate. Tucker reached home, however, on an error on Jim Stewart's swat.
