We keep dogs to day mostly for pets. Time was when the hunting dog was essential to a family's require ments. Without the dog the folks had no meat on the table. The horse has all but given up; even the circus is motor ized. The cat's job is pretty well taken care of by thous ands of inventions, each one claiming to be the "best mouse trap." The sheep, who has had a seat up front for a long time, is sitting farther and farther back in the hall, and may be pushed out the .back door in a few year. Synthetics Rayon, nylon, and a hun dred other fabics of a syn thetic nature have begun to cut deeply into the wool mar ket, and further discoveries in mm 54th Year 1959 Pages 1 Small Worlds Around Us By Lynn M. Watkins artificial fabrics may hasten the opening of the read door. Of course nothing tastes like roast pork or pork chops, so the hog is destined to hold a prominent place, in the barn yard. But scientists have been looking for meat substitutes for some time, and may come up with something that will make pork chops and beef steak as obsolete as the dodo bird. They already have done some wonderful things. Now they have a machine that "thinks." We are told that "nothing is impossible." Right here is the time to take a whole handful of salt, or stick your tongue in your cheek, laugh up your sleeve and say, "Oh yeah?" For even the cre ators of the "think" machine, or the atomic bomb, or the guided missile, know better than to try to make a machine that "will give milk." Tried It Don't laugh. There was a man a few years ago who ac tually tried it. He invented some pretty complicated gad gets and did some remarkable things. He received a great dealjof publicity, but no one detected a worried look on the cow's face. No, he didn't succeed. Look Silly The component parts of milk can be written down on a piece of paper, and they look rather silly. Water forms 85 per cent; the rest is pro tein, fat sugar, ash and salts. Taken all together milk is simply i'a whitish fluid secret- by female animals for the nourishment of their young. Really nothing to it or is there? But, strangely enough, mix ed up in the "suff" somewhere is a certain "sometning xnat puts this simple fluid, we call milk, in a class by itself. It defies imitation, or synthetics The contented cow isn't wor ried at all. She's "got some thing" and I think she is wise enough to know it.
