t 10B" MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Wednesday, April 8, 1959 Less Stylized Hull Design Keynote New Boats at NY Show Broader beam, less stylized hull design and the growing use of fiber glass and lap strake wooden construction keynoted the display of more than 250 outboard runabouts and utilities which comprised the majority of craft on dis play at the 49th annual Na tional Motor Boat Show in New York's Coliseum. The outboard boat display included rigs for day cruising, fishing, water skiing, camp boating, hunting and all man ner of boating activities. An interesting new design is the Keller Kraft Satellite II, billed as a "hydrabout.' This craft is basically a 17- foot runabout with hydroplane-type sponsons built right into both chines. When the boat gets under way, she comes up out of the water and rides on these two outer spon sons, attaining speeds up to 60 mph, according to the builder. Novel Outboard Another novel outboard craft that made its first public appearance at the Show is Custom Craft's new four-point Manta Ray runabout, a radical fiber glass craft that has a catmaran-type sea-sled hull. Fiber glass reinforced plas tic continues to grow by giant steps as a favored material for building these craft that vary generally from 12 to 19 feet in size. Playing the only strong counter point to this swing toward glass is the sim ilar growth of lapstrake- planked wood as a favored hull material, particularly for rougher water. Many builders of. wooden or aluminum boats are this year adding fiber glass lines to meet this growing demand. One of the most notable in this category is the Wagemaker company which introduced its Empire line of glass boats to supplement its Wolverine wooden boats and Cadillac aluminum craft. Outboard Motors To carry the more powerful outboard motors on the mar ket today and to provide ad ded stability and versatility, many outboard boat manufac turers offerings for this year have greater beam than prev iously. With the varied and increased use that today's out board boats are experiencing, this development logically fol lows the general build-up in the average boat lengths not able over recent years. Another trend evident in the outboard world is that manufacturers are now in cluding as standard equipment what used to be "extra" items, such as windshields, steering wheels and cables, deck hardware and in many cases upholstered seats. The automotive hull styling, particularly tail fins, that was widely featured in the past several years on outboard runabouts has in many cases been abandoned in favor of more simple design geared to actual usage rather than 'to visual appeal. However, man ufacturers are making wider use of color both in hull and deck combinations and in up holstery and interiors. Group Cruising Taking note of the growing popularity for group cruising in outboard boats with over night stops along the way, many manufacturers are offer ing utility models with after cockpits spacious enough for two or three persons to sleep on air mattresses. To provide shelter these craft have either convertible or permanent hard tops. Owens Yacht company, whose boats range from 15 to 35 feet, is concentrating its outboard production in fiber glass and wooden lapstrake planking, the latter an innova tion for the Baltimore firm. Another old line boat builder, Penn Yan, is also making a bid for a share of the bigger sized outboard boat market by introducing a line of five wooden lapstrake craft from 14 to 19 feet long. INSTALL ATION-Edgewater Marina, Edge water, N.J., is an example of a well planned installation. The U.S. needs more of these facilities to accommodate the thousands of new boats in the water. McFALL Eagle Point A reminder was made to residents of the city of Eagle Point that dur ing the month of April, May and' June, it is unlawful for dogs to run loose within the city. All dogs picked up will be taken to the county dog pound and the owners will be assessed a fine of $2.50 at the Eagle Point city hall before the dogs can be picked up at the pound. Several complaints have been received in the city hall of certain dogs killing chick ens on South B st. The dogs have been identified and they are to be kept tied up thru Easter, returning home Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mar tin were called to Klamath Falls Thursday, due to . the death of Martin's father. Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Sim mons arid family motored to Klamath Falls and visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lou Philliber and son Easter Sunday. Mrs. Elizabeth Ottosen left April 1 for Modesto, Calif., to meet her sister, Mrs. Mary Rich. They both went on to Pomona, Calif., for an indefi nite visit with relatives and friends. The annual Eagle Point Easter egg hunt was held Sat urday, March 28, on the high school football field. The Boy Scouts of the area met at 10 a.m. to hide the eggs. About 250 to 300 children partici pated in the hunt. Champlin Jr., that drivers should be alert for children in or near streets. He said 38 pedestrians were either killed or injured in Oregon traffic last year while playing in a street or road way. Champlin said figures from the department of motor ve hicles reveal that 11 children under 15 were killed in all types of pedestrian accidents and 470 in that age group were injured in pedestrian mishaps.
