10 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Tuesday, April 7, 1959 New Ambassador Incorporates Two Types of Vehicles The 1959 Ambassador V-8 Rambler, on sale at Lea Motors, Bartlett at Fifth st., "incorporates the luxury, com fort and performance of larg er American cars with com partness of design that affords greater ease of handling and parking dexterity of smaller automobiles." Six models, all with four doors, are offered in the cur rent Ambassador line, includ ing a Super sedan and station wagon, a Custom sedan and yhardtop sedan, and a Custom station wagon and hardtop sta tion wagon. The 1959 models are offer ed in 15 solid colors and 18 two-tone combinations. Inter iors, as well as exterior de sign, have been re-styled, with "personalized comfort" of in dividually adjustable reclin ing seats offered for the first time as optional equipment on all models. Ambassadors are available with standard transmission, optional overdrive, or the "Flash - O - Matic" automatic transmission, as o p 1 1 o nal equipment. Other improved items in this year's Ambassador are a new parking brake warning light and thicker brake linings which increase lining life by 30 per cent. Epps Suggests Second Term for Robert Duncan Salem - (UPD - State Demo cratic Chairman Dave Epps said recently that House Speaker Robert Duncan of Medford has done such an outstanding job he should seek election to the lower chamber again so he can serve a second term as the House leader. ; . House speakers usually do not run again for the lower chamber, sometimes running for the Senate- Epps said that the Jackson county Senate seat does not come up for election next year and that "I am afraid the state will lose his services if he does not seek office next time." Epps also indicated he felt Duncan would be excellent material for either state office or Congress sometime in the future. . . .. Duncan, commenting upon Epps' statement, said "I have no political ambition and right now my only concern is how the Legislature can do the best, job possible for the people." He said there were many other "very competent" representatives who could serve as speaker. Optional Items For More Safety . Two new optional items of fered by Plymouth for 1959 make major contributions to ward highway safety, accord ing to local dealers. They' are the new Mirror Matic rear-view mirror and the automatic headlight dim mer. Each is designed to re duce the causes of accidents at night, when the majority of accidents occur. Plymouths are sold locally by Dick Knight company, Parsons Motors and Hamlin Motor company. The new rear-view ,mirror is self-dimming when it picks up the lights of a following car, shifting automatically when bright lights strike it and returning to normal posi tion when the lights pass. Op erated by a photo-electric cell, the mirror can be con trolled by a three-way switch, "city," "hi-way" or ' off." The headlight dimmer util izes an electronic eye to auto matically dim or brighten headlights. It can be manually adjusted to lower the beam when an on-coming car is any distance from 900 to 1,200 feet away and automatically shifts back to bright beam. Crater Lake Motors, Main and Fir sts., reports that the nominal body length of seven feet means a bigger loadspace for cargo of all sorts. Volkswagens in U.S. Top 100,000 Mark Deliveries of Volkswagen cars and commercial vehicles in the United States during 1958 totaled 102,035 units, ac cording, to VW's export divis ion. The number is 25 per cent of the total of 401,000 foreign cars registered here last year. They are sold locally by Morse Motors, Sixth and Ivy sts. . Last year was the first time that any foreign automobile reached the '100,000 figure in the United States, it was said Volkswagens are sold in 120 different countries, led by the United States, Sweden, Can ada, Australia, Holland and Switzerland, in that order. Commenting on ,the effect the manufacture of smaller cars in Detroit will have on Volkswagen, a corporation spokesman said, "we feel that if the great American automo bile manufacturers decide to enter this field, it will prove the soundness of the smaller, compact car as basic economi cal transportation." California leads all the i states in the number of its reg istered trucks. DE GAULLE ILL Paris-flJPD-President Charles de Gaulle is suffering from a cold and has postponed' a scheduled four-day visit to the central provinces of France, it was announced Monday night. NAME GOVERNOR London-flJPD-Maj. Gen. Sir Julian Alvery Gascoigne, 55, has been appointed to succeed Lt. Gen. Sir John Woodall as goyernor and commander-in-chief of Bermuda, it was an nounced today. Oldsmobile Features Increased Passenger, Luggage Facilities The 1959 Oldsmobile fea tures increased passenger and luggage space, two complete ly new and more efficient Rocket engines, more respon sive power steering, new Air Scoop brakes on all four wheels and other engineering and accessory advancements. Darrell Miller, local deal er, reported this week for the "Live Better by Far with a Brand New Car" campaign, that Oldsmobile for 1959 rep resents the most outstanding product in its history. ' Total glass area in all models has been increased up to 36 per cent to give in creased visibility in all direc tions. The new "Vista-Panoramic" windshield has up to 570 square inches more glass area and contours deep into the roofline offering an un hindered view of overhanging traffic signals. Air Conditioning Pushbutton Type All air conditioning and heating controls in the 1959 Chrysler cars are of the push button type, integrated com pletely in the instrument panel. ' Buttons actuate . vacuum servo motors and eiecinc switches to perform all ad justments previously made by the driver. Cars of the Chrysler and Imperial division are among those in the "Live Better by Far with a Brand New Car" campaign. Hamlin Motor com pany has models on display at Eighth and Front sts. Thin Rooflines All models are marked by their thin rooflines, with in creased passenger compart ment roominess and. comfort. Rear seat passengers have over an inch more leg room in the Dynamic "88" and Super "88" series. Trunk space has been increased up to 64 per cent. A completely redesigned body and wide-spaced four beam headlamps set in a full width grille of anodized alum inum, give Oldsmobile a new "Linear Look." Among functional styling touches are the new rear deck handle and the platform top of the rear bumper. Matching the 6tyling are Oldsmobile's two responsive and economical , Rocket en gines, Miller reported. Both are "smoother, and, quieter, having longer cylinder bores, new reinforced aluminum pistons, connecting rods with greater bearing area, larger intake valve and a more rigid crankshaft. Ride and cornering char acteristics of the 1959 Olds mobile have been further im proved through use of a stronger and wider X-member frame; new, wider tread both front and rear; new double- acting front suspension; and new rear springs with wider- base rear, suspension. Everyone Said To Have Capacity To Cure Own Cancer By DELOS SMITH UPI Science Editor Excelsior Springs, Mo. -(UPD - Every human being has within himself "the capacity to cure his own cancer," Dr. Charles Higgins said Friday. He and other scientists dis closed progress in their ef forts to learn how to manipu late this capacity to the full. It is hidden within the en docrine system of interdepen dent glands which secrete a host of chemicals that regu late man's development, growth, reproduction and bod ily functions, in the opinion of Higgins, who has earned world fame for his pioneer ing discoveries of their rela tions to cancer. Tool Disclosed He disclosed the discovery of a new, easily used tool which could bestow a magnif icent benefit on the female sex. The tool is a way of get ting at the secrets of mam mary cancer which kills more women than any other. The tool is a particular kind of rat whose female never develops a mammary cancer spontaneously. Hig gins and his associates at the University of Chicago have learned how to inflict that cancer on these females 100 times in every 100 tries. He said 40 per cent of these cancers were found to depend on the secretions of the endocrine glands for their existence, which ,60 per cent are independent of those se cretions. This is also, rough ly, the proportion of human mammary cancers which are dependent or independent of those secretions. These rats are thus living laboratories both of how mammary cancers begin, how they can be dealt with by manipulating the extremely complex chemistry set off and regulated by endocrine secre tions, and finally cured. Put Through Cycles Higgins disclosed that al ready his laboratory has rats which have been put through that cycle, from cancer-free to cancerous and back to cancer free. A few which had mam mary cancers have been cancer-free - cured, that is - for a year. A year in a rat's life is equivalent to 30 in a wom an's.
