1 A MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford", Oregon, Monday, April 6, 195 $4,526 Cash Found In Discarded Jacket Yonkers, N. Y.-tUPD A Sal vation Army worked unable to fold a tattered old Army jacket donated for the needy slit open the lining and found it neatly padded with $4,526 in cash, it was revealed today. Detectives called la by the charitable organization traced the old jacket through a clean ing mark to the home of James Ross, who identified the jacket as the property of his late brother-in-law, James Cashin, a former police cap tain. Ross said he had given the jacket to the Salvation Army after Cashin's death last February. Dozens of very sad and mentally tortured women tell that now after the death of a loved BS22?l child or hus- -"'jWj band they are ail - to - pieces 5 because they have the idea that if they had only call ed another physician, or had had a Dr. Alvarez C O n SUitailOn, or had accepted an operation, or had refused an operation, or had sent the patient to a hospital earlier, or had taken him to Mayo's, he would be alive today. They keep won dering and wondering if they are responsible for the per son's death, or if there was anything that they could have done that would have saved the person's life.' What makes matters worse, unintentional ly cruel people keep telling the unhappy woman about a quack they know who "can cure the disease" the sick child had, and now the poor L woman wishes she had gone to the quack. Or, she now hears of an old woman in her neighborhood whose Indian grandmother inherited a med icine that cures the disease that the child had. To all these unhappy wom en I say, please quit worrying and please quit trying to figure things out. Doubtless you did the best you could at the time, and there is no use now in mulling it all over, day after day, and night after night. All that this can do is to make you ill; it won't do the dead child any good, and this is an important point, it can easily injure the nerves and minds of your remaining children. Usually, when I can talk to one of these women and can see the doctor's re port, I can" assure her that, be cause the child had an acute leukemia, or a brain tumor, or a cancer of the kidney, there .wasn't a thing that could have been done by any one with any hope of curing the child. In the case of an older person with a bad stroke or a scattered cancer, again, there was nothing cura tive that could have been done. The Diagnosis That Means Lhlle I am often unhappy when I get a letter from someone who is obviously very much in need of heln and verv anxious to get it. I am sure he or she must feel terribly let-down when my card comes saying that I must not do any guessing as to diagnosis or treatment. Such guessing wouldn't go any good. Often what the person tells me does not help me at all. Perhaps his doctor said his blood "was a bit thin" or his lungs, "were a bit weak;" but such a diagnosis does not mean a thing to me. Sometimes the person gives me his diagnosis and that also is meaningless to me. He may say he has catarrh, or eczema, or indigestion. Just now my secretary hands me a letter from a man who says he has disease of the liver. That could be anything. Here is another letter from a mother who says her child has a heart murmur. She wants to know if the girl should be operated on? How can I guess when I don't know what is wrong with the heart and - most important of all -1 don't know if the child is ill or handicapped at all by her heart abnormality. Why operate if the child is a Itrong, active tomboy? Even we doctors can miss this important point.' For in stance; the other day a physic ian wrote to say that an x-ray man had just found in him a duodenal ulcer (just outside the stomach). What type of operation did I think he should have? My answer was, "Are you ill? Have you any pain? If you are comfortable, what do you want with an operation?" Here is a letter from a man who wants a cure for his "Bright's disease." I can't hek him because "Bright's dis ease" can mean pretty near anything. All the man may have is a little harmless al bumin in his urine; or, on the other hand, he may be bloat ed with water and dying! Many a woman says she has a high blood pressure. Again, this may be harmless and al most normal for her age, so why treat it? Another person' says, "I have a low blood sugar," or "a low blood pres sure," but I suspect that another two or three tests would show that the measure ments i were within normal limits and not causing the symptoms. Should Be Satisfied Many of the letters I get are from people who, I think, should be satisfied with their home doctor. From their story, he seems to be doing a good job. Hundreds of people ask if they should take their old father with an apparently hopeless stroke or cancer to some great medical center or to some quack. I think they should take the advice of their family doctor about this. Often he will say, "No; don't waste your money, and tor ture your poor father with the trip and many tests. I wouldn't do that to my father, if he were the patient." Finally, I wish all those who feel like writing me for ad vice would remember that I, who am a very busy man, cannot possibly read let alone answer - the 100 or more letters that may come in in a day. Hundreds write, "I'll watch tomorrow for an answer to this in my news paper." I am terribly sorry, but I cannot run this column in that way. Contractors are putting in long hours in both sites to prepare the construction proj ects to withstand the expected runoff. At Ice Harbor, the south shore construction is rated at about 98 per cent complete, but the upstream south shore abutment of the old coffer dam must be removed prior to the runoff to prevent it be ing washed downstream into the power-house intake sec tion of the dam.
