French violinist Zino Fran cescatti will be soloist for the Cleveland orchestra broad cast, under the direction of George Szell on KYJC-CBS Radio Sunday, March 29 at 11:05-12 noon, PST. Mr. Fran cescatti, "among the greatest performers on the instrument now before the public," ac cording to the New York Times, will be heard in Sir William Walton's "Concerto for Violin and Orchestra." Dr. Szell will open the broadcast program with the Beethoven overture to "Corio lanus." Next, Dr. Szell and the Ensemble will play the Bach "Brendenburg Concerto No. 3 in G major for String Orchestra." Bach was com missioned by the Margrave of Brandenburg in May, 1718 to write a set of six compositions for solo instruments with string orchestra. He finished them on March 24, 1721, sent them to the Margrave's house, where they were stored away. It is probably that they were never played. Following the Margrave's Death Bach's con certos were auctioned off for the equivalent of eight cents apiece and were not printed until 1850, 100 years after Bach's death. Today the "Third Concerto" is probably the most performed and popu lar work of the series. The Violin Concerto is the .first of two Walton works to be given their word premieres by the Cleveland Orchestra. The other was the Walton "Partita for Orchestra," com missioned for the orchestra's 40th anniversary and broad cast on CBS Radio last year.
