The 37-year-old southpaw who has had nine 20-victory seasons high-lighted another day of brilliant all-around Grapefruit league pitching Tuesday when he went the distance in a 3-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Spahn thereby took the play away from Los Angeles' Don Drys dale and Pittsburgh's Vera Law, each of whom, also hurled nine innings, as well Venezuelan On Retired List of SF Scottsdale, Ariz. -EPD- Ra mon Monzant and the San Francisco Giants have offi cially parted company at least for the 1959 season. The slim, stylish-throwing Monzant posted an 8-11 rec ord last season. He returned to his home in - Venezuela from where he made a series of declarations concerning his unhappiness in baseball. He finally announced he was re tiring from the game. But he had a semi-change of heart last month and said he might reconsider for $5,000 tax free. Giant vice president Chub Feeny declined, but of fered to advance Ramon money on his salary. Tuesday, Monzant said he no longer wanted to play in the U. S. and the Giants re gretfully placed hirri on the voluntary retired list. A happier note for the Gi ants was struck on the dia mond when the San Francis cans finally upended the Bos ton Red Sox at Phoenix, 10-4. Jack Sanford looked like the new king of the Giant right-handers with a relaxed seven inning performance. He gave up two earned runs. Leading the hit parade again was Andre Rodgers who has thumped 14 hits in his last 21 visits to the plate. He homered and doubled while driving in a quartet of runs. Orlando Cepeda hit a gar gantuan homer and single and drove in three markers while Bob Schmidt and Felipe Alou each contributed a pair of bingles. Four miscues, includ ing two by Rodgers, darkened the Giants' horizon, however. Don Hyman and Joe Ship ley worked one inning each in relief. Yanks Expect Kubek in Week Ft. Monmouth, N. J. -IP11-Tony Kubek, who is expected to be the New York Yankees' regular shortstop this year, will be discharged from the Army on Saturday and plans to join the club" in about a week. The 22-year-old American league Rookie of the Year in 1957 is being discharged earl ier than an anticipated April 19 date because . he did not take several furloughs due to him. Kubek went into the Army under a six-month en listment after the 1958 World Series. A spokesman at Ft. Mon mouth said that Kubek prob ably will receive his final processing at Fort Dix, N.J. as San Francisco's Jack San ford who turned in a power ful seven-inning performance. Joe Schaffernoth, a 21-year-old rookie, rounded out the string of fine mound jobs when he pitched seven shut out innings in the Chicago Cubs' 4-2 decision over the Cleveland Indians. Cards Spahn's Cousins Spahn scattered three hits, walked two and struck out three in a masterful showing against his favorite cousins. The Cardinals, who have lost 51 decisions to Spahn during his National league career, got only one man to second base -in a fourth-inning double by Chuck Essegian. Drysdale, the comeback kid of the Dodger camp, pitched a six-hitter and beat the Phila delphia Phillies, 1-0, when Jim Gentile tripled across a run in the fourth inning. Drys dale, who has given up two runs, walked five and struck out 17 batters in 24 innings this spring, used 109 pitches and faced only 31 batters Tuesday. Law, who had a 14-12 record last season, pitched a four-hitter as the Pittsburgh Pirates scored a 3-1 win over the Detroit Tigers. Gail Harris' second-inning homer produced the only run for Detroit. Hank Failes had a homer and two singles and Rocky Nelson also homered for the Pirates. Sanford Sparks Giants Sanford, who the Giants hope will approximate his 19- win total of 1957, pitched seven innings and was touched for five hits to lead San Fran cisco to a 10-4 decision over the Boston Red Sox. Andre Rodgers hit a dauble and a 400-foot homer to knock in four runs and pace the Giant attack. Rodgers had collected 14 hits in his last 21 tries. Schaffernoth, a right hand- er on the San Antonio roster, feced only 23 batters in his seven-inning outing for the Cubs. The Cubs snapped a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning when Ernie Banks delivered a two-run double as a pinch hitter. Cub pitcher Taylor Phillips was struck on the head by a line drive in pre game practice but X-rays proved negative. The New York Yankees beat the Chicago White Sox, 6-4. the Baltimore Orioles walloped the Kansas City Ath letics, 11-3, and the Washing ton Senators edged out the Cincinnati Reds, 7-6, in other exhibition activity. Yankees Rally The Yankees, held hitless by rookie Rodolfo Arias for four innings, rallied with seven singles and five runs in the fifth inning at Miami Sta dium in a night game. Bill Skowron had two hits to keep his spring average at .524 and rookie John Gabler yielded one run in five innings for the Yankees. Gus Triandos drove in three runs with a homer and double and Willie Tasby knocked in three with a homer and single for the Orioles. Jack Harsh man pitched the first seven innings for the Orioles and was tagged for a homer and a double. Bob Cerv had a single, double and triple for Kansas City. Rookie outfielder Len Tuck er's two-run homer helped the Senators build up an early 7-0 lead and a six-run Cin cinnati uprising against Dick Hyde in the eighth fell short. SP 3-6297 Drysdale Goes Nine, Beats Phils Vero Beach, Fla.-fUPD-John- ny Podres was to be out to match the pitching feat of teammate Don Drysdale as the Los Angeles Dodgers went against the Milwaukee Braves today. The Braves, National league champs last year, seem to be putty in the hands of the seventh-place Dodgers who took 14 of 22 games in 1958 and are doing great against the Wis consin team during the spring training games this year. The Dodgers, as a matter of fact, are doing great against all comers in the grapefruit league exhibition games, lead ing the so-called league 10-3 to top both National and American league teams. Full Nine Drysdale, 22-year-old hurl er from "Van Nuys, was the first Dodger pitcher to go a full nine innings this spring when he blanked the Phila delphia Phillies 1-0 Tuesday in a contest at Sarasota. Drysdale, starting his fourth season with the Dodgers, gave up five hits, walked one man and fanned five in going the route with 109 pitches. "Don had plenty of mus tard left," catcher Norm Sher ry said after the game. "He was throwing hard enough in the ninth to go a couple of more rounds." Drysdale in 24 innings this spring has yielded 17 hits and only two runs for an earned run average of 4.16. Junior Gilliam drove in the game's only tally when he hit a triple in the fourth to drive home Wally Moon who had connected for a double. Dodger Player To Hold Tongue Vero Beach, Fla. -(UPD-Gen-eral Manager Buzzie Bavasi of the Los Angeles Dodgers said today that outspoken in fielder Don Zimmer "has agreed to stop popping off" and just try to win a job with the club. Zimmer has been widely quoted all spring to the ef fect that he is in the Dodger doghouse and that the Mil waukee Braves "could prob ably get me for a dozen base ball bats." Zimmer, 28-year-old na tive of Cincinnati whose ca reer has been plagued by tra gedy, has made only two hits in 18 tries this spring and has been hobbled with a pulled leg muscle the last three days. Inter-City Ring Bouts Tonight Chicago (UPD Thirty-two amateur boxers representing the best in the West and the cream of the Eastern crop clash tonight in the 32nd an nual New York-Chicago inter city matches. Eight of the 16 matches will be for national Golden Glove crowns but the remain ing eight will pit alternates of each squad against each other in three-round bouts that will be just as important toward the team score. Four championship bouts in the flyweight, bantam weight, welterweight and light heavyweight divisions will be carried over a national TV hookup (ABC). Johansson Wants IBG included New York-fllPD-Ingemar Jo hansson wants to be sued by the International Boxing club of Chicago. Attorneys for the Swedish heavyweight made that known Tuesday when they filed a motion in federal court here, asking that the court name the IBC as co-plaintiff in the suit that has been filed against Johansson by heavy weight Eddie Machen of Red ding, Calif. Machen, who was knocked out by Johansson last Sept. 14 in Sweden, claims he has a return -bout agreement with Johansson and that the Swede should be forced to fight him before going through with a proposed summer title bout with heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson. Indispensable Party Johansson's motion, filed by attorney Justin Golenbock, claims that the IBC should be a plaintiff along with Machen because, as the proposed pro moter in the return-bout agreement, it is "an indis pensable party" in the case. The motion was interpreted as a legal maneuver to en hance Johansson's case since, it is understood the Swede's attorneys feel any suit brought by the IBC which is under a federal court order to disband would have little chance of success. Johansson contends he is not bound by the return-bout agreement. He claims that Ed vin Ahlqvist, who supposedly signed the agreement o: . his behalf, is only his "advisor" and not his legal manager. The case is due to be herd in Southern District federal court on March 31. Cubs Place Hopes On Young Pitchers (This is the seventh dis patch on the prospects of major league learns for 1959.) By SCOTT BAILLIE Mesa, Ariz.-fiJPD - Manager Bob Scheffling of the Cubs is j looking to an apple-cheeked pitching staff plus a veteran outfield and infield to hustle his club back into the first di vision for the first time since 1946. "We'll go as far as our young pitchers can take us," says Scheffing, who points out that southpaws Taylor Phil lips is the "dean" of the staff at 25. "And I hope for better days from Moe Drabowsky and Dick Drott." These two right-handers, aged 23 and 22 respectively, won a total of 28 games be tween them in 1957 when Chicago finished last. Then in 1958 the best they could mus ter up was 16 wins for a team that ended in a fifth-place tie with St. Louis. Want Left-Hander Drabowsky (9-11) suffered a sore elbow last season, an ailment which may have been caused by some infected teeth which since have been extract ed. Drott (7-11) a rather wild strikeout artist with the Cubs in 1957, ran into even more control trouble last year and had ' a lot of errors behind him. "I'm also looking for a-better year from T-Bone," Schef fing says of the husky Phil lips. "He went sort of sour in the latter part of the season." If the Cubs can get another left-hander to help Bill Henry (5-3) in relief, they'll be hap py. And they may have found him in Art Ceccarelli, a draf tee from Phoenix where he had a 10-6 mark last season. Bob Anderson (9-6), steady and tireless, figures in Schef fing's plans as a possible start er. So do Glen Hobbie (10-6) and Dave Hillman (4-8). Banks Is Big Man The most impressive-looking rookie is John Buzhardt, a right-hander who compiled a 1.88 earned run average dur ing a 23-inning stint with the Cubs last season. The big man on the club is Ernie Banks, who won the National league's most valu able player award last year while hitting 47 homers and leading both leagues with 129 runs batted 'In. The lithe shortstop appears as danger ous as ever. Alvin Dark, now 36, is peg ged for third base and has said he is ready to go 154 games. But Scheffing wants to play the former LSU football star about two weeks at a stretch, then rest him with either Johnny Goryl or Earl Averill stepping in. Averill, who is the son of Cleveland's star center fielder of two dec ades ago, was obtained from that club in a recent deal which sent pitcher Johnny Briggs and outfielder Jim Bol ger to the Tribe. Some camp experts say that Averill still is not ready for the majors. Tony Taylor, tremedously fast but rather weak at bat, last season, may ' turn into a better hitter this year while holding down second base. He has been tabbed as the most improved player in . camp. Tony hit .300 in Puerto Rico this winter after ending up with .235 at Chicago. Long At First Dale Long who ' never has hit less than 20 homers per season since entering the Na tional League in 1955, con tinues to be the long-ball threat at first. Right behind him is Jim Marshall, who thinks he is at the peak of his career and also hits a size able belt. In the outfield it looks pret ty much like Walt Moose Moryn in left, Bobby Thomson in center and Lee Walls in right. All are solid veterans although Walls is the only member of the trio to hit over .300 last year. Also on hand for outfield duty are Bob Will, who hit .361 at Fort Worth in 1958; Chick King and rookie George Altaian. . Scheffing hedges when faced with the question of the Cubs' chance for getting a share of the World Series money for a first-division fin ish. But Banks says: "Every body is up this season because we are so Improved over 1958. Now we know we can win games." Ducks Even Cal Series Berkeley, Calif. -(UPD- Ore gon evened a two-game non conference baseball series with the California Bears Tuesday, 12-6. Cal won Mon day's game 6-5 in 10 innings. Jim Hollister and Len Read paced the Webfoot victory. Hollister banged out two doubles and a single and Read hit a double and a single. Denny Peterson, who pitch ed the first five innings, was credited with the Webfoot vic tory. Oregon met Santa Clara to day. Undefeated Santa Clara ov ercame an 8-1 deficit to down USF 11-10 yesterday. It was the Broncs seventh straight win. SF Giants Get Jones In SL Deal St. Petersburg, Fla. (UPD -The St. Louis Cardinals today traded Sam Jones, the major league's strikeout t king of 1958, and a young pitcher to the San Francisco Giants for outfielder-first baseman Bill White and third baseman Ray Jablonski. - The rookie pitcher who was sent to the Giants with Jones was Don Choate, 21, a right hander who had a 7-7 record for Omaha in the American association last season. Choate promptly was assigned to the Giants' Phoenix farm club in the Pacific Coast league. No Cash General Manager Bing De- vine of the Cardinals, who an nounced the deal, said there was no cash involved. He said he and Chub Feeney, vice president of the Giants, had been negotiating the trade for several weeks. "We need power as the Giants need pitching," Devine said.
