The school, fi nanced by Easter seals, has youngsters from many parts of the state and includes daily therapy as well as education. Promoters File Articles; Will Seek Industry Ashland - Articles of incor poration for an organization to promote development of new industry for Ashland are being filed this week by Ash land Promoters Inc. Incorporators include Lloyd Selby, chairman of the Ash land Economic Development commission, and William Briggs and Mayor Richard Neill, commission members; the three, plus Arnold Bauder and Dr. Chris Hald, also com mission members, comprise the original board of direct ors. Purpose of the new corpo ration will be to work closely with the Ashland Economic Development com mission, with the privately financed company able to purchase in dustrial sites, erect and lease buildings, and spend or bor row funds which state law prohibits a city from, doing. City Prohibited Selby said "the city is pro hibited from using its funds to purchase sites for private industry or erect buildings. After a study of the success which other cities are having in attracting industry, it be came apparent that some priv ate corporation was needed which could do things prohib ited to the city. This new com pany in no way supersedes the development commission, but It will work closely with the commission and the two, act ing together, should be able to attract additional payrolls for Ashland." Original capitalization for Ashland Promoters Inc. is set at $5,000, with 5,000 shares at $1 each. Local business and profes sional men wefe reported to have expressed enthusiastic support for the program. A meeting of stockholders for election of directors will be held as soon as the articles of incorporation are approved, Selby reported. Bridge Teams Baffle for Cup Seattle -(UPD- Two teams out of an original field of 80 will battle it' out today for the Vanderbilt cup in the Spring national tournament of the American Contract Bridge League. After winning nine straight matches, the B. Jay Backer team of New York was beaten in the early hours today by 3 international match points by the Charles' Goren 4eam of New York. An international match point is worth about 100 points in rubber bridge scor ing. The Goren team led at the halfway mark by 2 points and managed to hold on during the second 18-match round of play. The two teams will play 18 hands this afternoon and fin ish with another 18 hands of play tonight. The winning team in the double-elimination tourna ment will be one of five to represent the United States in the 1960 World Bridge Olym piad in Rome. OPPOSE DEATH PENALTY Ottaa, Ont. fUPB Support grew today for a move to abol ish the death penalty for mur der in . Canada. The contro versial question of capital punishment was spotlighted in the House of Commons Tues day when a private member's bill to abolish capital punish ment came up for second reading. Mrs. Duncan To Be Sentenced To Death on April 3 Ventura, Calif. - (UPD - Eliza beth Duncan, 54, found sane at the time she hired two men to kill her pregnant daughter- in-law, will be formally sen tenced to death April 3. Judge Charles F. Black stock, who Tuesday ruled the Santa Barbara matron sane, will pass the sentence com mitting her to death in the gas chamber and on the same day also will hear arguments by her attorney for a new trial. Success Seen Mrs. Duncan, who along with her son, Frank, 30, heard the sanity ruling with com posure in the same court room where a jury of eight women and four men convict ed her of the for-hired mur der of Frank's wife, Olga, 30, and then condemned her to death, said she thought her appeal would be success ful. She said the murder case against her was "full of holes," and defense attorney S. Ward Sullivan charged he could cite 16 points including judicial errors and miscon duct by District Attorney Roy Gustafson to back up arguments for a new trial. Judge Blackstock, 83, who presided over . the separate trial and sentencing hearing prescribed under California law in capital punishment cases, took less than five min utes to rule Mrs. Duncan sane. Sanity under Calfornia law is the ability to distinguish the difference between right and wrong. Slaying Admitted Mrs. Duncan, pictured as an over-possessive mother too jealous to share her son with another woman, hired for a promised $6,000 Luis Moya, 22, and Augustine Baldonado, 25, to kill her daughter-in- law last Nov. 17. Both men admitted, the slaying and testified against Mrs. Duncan during her lengthy trial concluded last week. They will stand trial next month on their pleas of innocent by reason of insanity. Duncan Elected By Fiscal Group Salem -(UPD- Members of the newly-created legislative fis cal committee Tuesday elected House Speaker Robert B. Dun can (D-Medford) as chairman. Duncan named a subcom mittee to receive and study applications for the position of fiscal officer, top staff job for the committee. Named were Sen. Alfred Corbett (D-Portland), Sen. Ed win Durno (R-Medford), Rep. Keith D. Skelton (D-Eugene) and Rep. Stafford Hansell (It-Athena). Dog's Bite Fatal To Five-Year-Old Olympia, Wash. -(UPD- An 80-pound Siberian Huskey Tuesday ripped the jugular vein of a five-year-old young-j ster who had crawled into a shed to pet the animal. ; Billy Stillions, Tumwater, j was found dead about a half j hour later. The dog's owner, Martin J. i Sebska, immediately shot the : animal. ' Hollis B. Fultz, Thurston county coroner, said the boy died from a severed jugular vein, and has been bitten sev eral times. He said the youngster had petted the dog before and had apparently crawled into the animal's quarters. "The dog had never bitten anyone else before," Hollis related, "but he attacked in the dark when Billy crawled into his hole." Kentucky Coal Field Situation Eyed by Governor Frankfort, Ky. -(UPD- Gov. A. B. Chandler kept a watch ful eye on the tense strike bound eastern Kentucky coal fields today despite assur ances by union leaders that it would be unnecessary to call out the National Guard. "With this sort of thing you can't wait for something to happen. Then it would be too late," said Chandler, who sent troops to the coal fields dur ing his first term as governor in 1939. , Guard Alerted Chandler alerted the guard Tuesday after State Public Safety Commissioner Don Sturgill reported that a crowd of 1,000 members threatened to destroy and burn a mine tipple at Colson in southeast ern Kentucky. The situation eased a few hours later, however, whert Carson Hibbitts, president of United Mine Workers Districts 28 and 30 gave assurance that pickets at the Camp Fork Coal company tipple would be "no further demonstration of force there." Most Serious Tuesday's incident at Col son was the most serious since the UMW went on strike to en force demands for a $2 per day wage increase from op erators on, March 15. It broke 'the uneasy quiet that hung over the coal fields since last week when the un ion agreed to withdraw pick ets pending the outcome of a court hearing Tuesday at Pikeville. It has been found that the spores of certain fungi can survive long exposure to " a vacuum equivalent to inter planetry space.
