'It was a J patchwork af 71 fair into which I a sorts of fM2f I stran2e filmed "J mi I snippets had William Ewald been tossed-a Bob Hope monolog in Alaska, Edgar Bergen exchanging wooden talk with his wooden friends, George Sanders hov ering around the edges, a few songs from Julie London and Miss Langford popping in and out of this weird hash in an attempt to impose a fake unity on it all. Some of its parts had the ticky-tick gloss of a cheap movie of the 1930s - one of those things made up of make believe people, coiffed and slicked and grinning with all of their human beingness! enameled over. With the en tire mess, there were only a few entertaining moments those provided by Miss Lon don and the Four Freshmen. Miss Langford, a performer of small skills, tried to carry the burden of the show. It was a misplaced act of con fidence on her part. Slides to be Shown At Foresters Meet The Siskiyou chapter, So ciety of American Foresters, will meet Friday, March 20, at the Jackson hotel. Dinner will be served at 7:30 p.m. preceded by a 30 minute soc ial period. Ralph Wiese will show slides of Newfoundland and the Hudson Bay region. CANADIAN OFFICIAL DIES Ottawa - (UPD - W. D. Police Investigate Gold Hill Burglary State police today are in vestigating the burglary Sun day of the P. J. RasmUssen garage, two miles north of Gold Hill. Thieves entered the service station early Sunday morn ing by breaking a window. They took cigarettes, candy, chewing gum and trading stamps, officers said. State police estimated that approximately S25 worth of property is missing. Officers are also investigat ing a complaint from the act ing forest ranger at Union Creek that some youths Sun day chopped down a highway sign and destroyed forest ser vice signs. CHIP FOUNDER DIES Monrovia, Calif. - (CPD - Fun eral services will be held Tuesday for Mrs. Laura Scud der, founder of the potato chip firm which bears her name. Mrs. Scudder, about 70, died Friday night after a lingering illness. Americans took out 19,276, 767 fishing licenses last year. Back Stairs: Macmillan and Camp David By MERRIMAN SMITH ; UPI While House Reporter Washington - (UPD - Back stairs at the White House: Today or Tuesday, British Prime Minister Harold Mac millan will be packing his bags in London for the flight to Washington and his con ferences with President Eisen hower on the Berlin crisis. The two leaders will meet Friday at Eisenhower's spe cial woodsy hide-away, Camp David, in the Catoctin Moun tains of Maryland. Since it is highly unlikely that the urbane and polished Prime Minister's previous summit conference experi ences have led him into such sylvan surroundings, there are some things he should know about Camp David. For one thing, he would be well advised to wear that white fur cap that caught the fancy of the Russians when he wore it in Moscow re cently. Spring still is some time away on the chilly Mary land summit, and the weather can be quite sharp until mid April or later. The Prime Minister should know that a walk in the Cat octin Woods is fine in day light but risky business after dark. The camp is guarded by a well-trained detachment of U.S. Marines and when dark ness falls, there's a sharp eyed leatherneck behind more than a few of the trees. Otherwise, Macmillan won't need toq much in the way of heavy clothing except for his arrival and departure, probably by helicopter. The president's cottage where he'll be a guest is snug and well heated. Movies in Mess Hall Night life? It's very lim ited. Sometimes there' are movies in the Navy mess hall. The nearest town in Thur mont, a bit on the smallish side. Its entertainment facili ties include Camp Cosy, a roadside dining spot with tourist accommodations, one movie and a snake farm (un fortunately the boa constrict or and the cobra are appear ing currently in the south) mere are no bars. Beer is sold over the counter, liquor is available only in a package store Normally, when heads of government meet, the host entertains at dinner, and the guest picks some fancy ban quet hall and gives a "thank you" dinner before returning home. Up Against II Eisenhower can offer the Prime Minister a comfortable dinner without leaving the camp, but Macmillan will be up against it when he goes shopping for dinner facilities off the premises. He might consider Moun tain Jerry's, a Thurmont spot, just north of the railroad un derpass. The Prime Minister wouldn't have to worry about seating arrangements or such fancy details. Many of Moun tain Jerry's devotees never go inside, but have their ham burgers and cheese sand wiches pushed out to them through a window. They said Msopole, who was belieyed to have received training in Moscow, was di recting operations for large gangs of Africans in raids on villages where government buildings and homes of Afri cans loyal to the government have been burned. Rains Check Operations Heavy rains brought a tem porary halt to both terrorist and government operations in the northern province. Security forces, conducting a clean-up campaign in the native villagesr killed one African and wounded two others Sunday when they opened fire on "massed demon strators. Troops in the Bomb area arrested 23 young Africans as they wound up "Operation Berringbone" i n southern Nyasaland : while "Operation Triangle" ended in the central provinces with the arrest of five persons. Others Surrender Another 50 Africans sur rendered to authorities at Fort Manning following riots Saturday at Mlanje, near the northern Rhodesia border. Lord Perth, Britain's min ister of state for. colonial af fairs, who arrived in Blantyre for a first-hand report on the situation, took advantage of the lull in the violence to in terview Africans who have been rounded up by the se curity forces and placed in detention camps. Central African Federation Premier Sir Roy Welensky said Communist influences could be blamed for some of the recent African disturbances. Volunteers Hear Cancer Society State Official Mac Gardner, field service director, Oregon division of the American Cancer Society, spoke Thursday before a group of local volunteer work ers. The speaker stressed the importance of the volunteer worker in the educational program of the society and stated that the fact that each person did volunteer made the more than 1,000 scientists in research centers throughout the country. He mentioned that 255,000 men, women and children die each year of cancer. Other speakers at the morn ing session were Dr. Robert Buck, president Jackson coun ty unit, who spoke on the re search division of the society; Mrs. Ray Frisbie, service chairman for Jackson county, spoke on the services avail able to cancer patients; and Mrs. C. B. Collins, county edu cation chairman, who report ed on the films which are be ing shown throughout the county. Also speaking were, Joe Moore, crusade committee chairman; Mrs. Ralph Odell, Medford chairman; and Mrs. Mahr Feymers for Mrs. Jack James, chairman for areas outside Medford. The life-saving and fund raising drive will begin April 1 and has been . termed "the greatest attack ever mounted against a disease." The month has been designated Cancer Control Month. Hilleboe, New York state health commissioner. A per son's chances of surviving a serious accident are far great er when he is not thrown from the car. Studies show that the risk of death to oc cupants who are thrown from the car is about five times as great as those who remain in side the car. Memorial Fellowship Told by University Eugene - the establishment of the Paul Patterson Memor ial Fellowship has been an nounced by O. Meredith Wil son, president of the Univer sity of Oregon. Under the program, a $1,000 fellowship will be awarded each year to a student com pleting his' junior year in the school law. The memorial is to the late Paul Linton Pat terson, 26th governor of Ore gon. Winner of the fellowship will be known as the Paul Patterson Fellow in law and public service.
