rpHE PUBLISHED EXTRACT of the diary of Kay Nelson, a
J- lovely lady, gives an interesting insight into a woman's
way of filling a hope chest.
in June, Miss Nelson
bought a pair of white Ber
muda shorts and a grey
checked shirt for $14.98. In
July, she bought a grey
flannel skirt to go with the
shirt ($35). In August she
bought shoes and a hand
bag to go with the blouse
and skirt ($90).
In October, she bought a
fashionable black dress to
go with the shoes and hand
bag: ($260). In November,
she bought a platinum mink
stole to go with the dress
($1,000).
In December, for Christmas, she's trying to promote a grey
convertible ($4,600) to go with the mink stole.
For ten minutes, I racked my brain trying to think bf whom
Miss Nelson reminded me. Suddenly, in a blinding flash, it
came to me. My own wife, Phyllis!

Adrienne S. I want to go
back home . . . I'm lonely.
Leon S. She'll forget it
when we raise a family.
Adrienne S. My husband
I have been married for nearly
a year and we haven't been
very happy. The main trouble
Is that we are very lonely.
When we got married we
moved out of our home town
to a large city quite far away.
At first I was thrilled by city
life, but now I find I miss my
family and friends terribly.
We have found that people
in this city are very unfriend
. ly. I try to make friends with
.some of our neighbors, but
they are so cold. They hardly
greet you. I have begged Leon
to bring people from his of
fice to our home for dinner,
but he is just a social dud.
He can't seem to make contact
with anyone. I would like to
go back home, even if we have
to take a cut in our income.
Leon S. It's so silly to talk
about a "cut in our income"
when Adrienne knows perfect
ly well that there just aren't
any jobs in my field in our
home town. I not only couldn't
make as much money, but I
would have to figure out a
new way of earning a living.
I have spent quite a lot of time
and money to get the training
I need for the work I do. It
would mean that the whole
thing would be chucked out
of tfie window.
I guess it's true that I am
a "social dud." I know I'm
either too quiet or too talk
ative. The people in my of
fice were friendly at first, but
our relations petered out very
quickly.
I figure that once we start
. raising a family Adrienne will
' be kept busy enough and will
forget her loneliness.
The Council: Neither of the
solutions suggested by the two
partners holds much promise
of satisfaction for the other.
Certainly, Leon needs to do
the work he is trained to do
and which nets him a better
income if he is to be reason
ably happy. But Adrienne
can't sit around waiting for
a family to keep her company
if she is to be reasonably hap
py. Friends are always needed.
This couple should recog
nize that people in cities are
not at all unfriendly, but they
have different habits of socia
bility. They do not usually
make friends with neighbors
because they have so many
of them and they live so close
that they run the risk of hav
ing their private lives in
fringed on.
Friendships are often made
at the place of work, but here
too there is a tendency to be
careful about intruding on the
privacy of another. Usually,
invitations to outside-of-the-office
sociability are made
cautiously, each party care
fully feeling out whether soc
ial overtures are desired. If
he wishes to be friendly with
some person or persons in his
office, Leon should gradually
move the talk in the direction
of personal interests and if all
works well, he should give or
get an invitation to visit or
go out with another couple.
However, such contacts will
probably not be enough for an
out-of-towner living away
from family and childhood
friends. Adrienne and Leon
should make up their minds
to find friendships through
church and community groups.
Here they will meet a large
group of individuals of their
own inclinations and they will
find them open, friendly and
eager to know newcomers.

Government Makes
Money on Money
Washington - (LTD - The gov
ernment makes money by
making money.
It will make a profit of $40
million on the coins it turns
out in the fiscal year that
starts July 1, according to the
testimony of treasury officials
which was made public today,
The profit results from the
fact that the metal which goes
into the coins cost less than
their face value.
For instance, the govern
ment uses only 12 cents worth
of metal for every $1 worth
of nickels, officials told a
House appropriations subcommittee.

Mrs. Duncan's Fafe In Hands of Jury
Ventura, Calif. -rtlPD- Eight
women and four men began
deliberations today on the
fate of Elizabeth Duncan, 54-year-old
matron accused of
hiring two killers to murder
her pregnant daughter-in-law.

trial were completed
