SPORTS 1 Snider To Be In LA Opener Vero Beach, Fla. -OD- Vet eran star Duke Snider will play in Saturday's opening game of the grapefruit league between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies. The Duke, showing all the signs of eagerness and deter mination that could lift the Dodgers into the first division of the National lea sue this year, volunteered Wednesday to play a couple innings in trie exhibition game. "I can't even remember Duke playing in the first spring game b ef o r e, said Manager Walt Alston. "I hadn't planned to use him." Delivered SP 2-5271 Rupp Gets UP Honor New York-(CPD-Adolph Rupp of Kentucky, now busy get ting another squad of "fid dling" Wildcats ready to de fend their NCAA basketball title, today was voted United Press International "Coach of i the Year" for the 1958-59 sea son Rupp described the Wild cats who scored a surprise tri umph in last year's NCAA tournament as "just a bunch of fiddlers who turned into violinists." It was the same story this season. Johnny Cox was the only starter who re turned from the champion ship team but Rupp directed his inexperienced squad to 23 victories in 25 games' of a rugged schedule. Jay Cheatham, Dragster Pilot, Killed in Crash James Walker (Jay) Cheat ham, Sunnyvale, Calif., whose powerful dragster set a Camp White strip record last summer, was killed Sunday at Bakersfield, Calif. His gasoline-powered rail dragster flipped end-over-end after striking some metal bar rels on the Bakersfield strip. Cheatham had just completed an elimination run and was clocked at 150.34 miles per hour. He had shut down the engine and was traveling about 75 mph when the acci dent occurred. Barrels were used to warn drivers that the course narrowed for the next half-mile. Cheatham was pinned be neath his machine. The Sunnyvale driver last fall set world records of 9.48 seconds elapsed time and 150.5 miles per hour for gaso line driven vehicles. His strip record at Camp White is 144.46 miles per hour.
