Boyd, a sophomore in pre- , journalism at Southern Ore gon college, last week saw the . inside workings of the 50th legislative assembly. As the selection from SOC in the Citizenship Clearing House program, Boyd was an aide to House Speaker Robert B. Duncan, Medford Demo crat. Attend Sessions From that position, Boyd attended legislative sessions and . committee meetings, handled liaison between the speaker's office and other leg islative members, did research for Duncan and observed the legislative process in general. From the week-long experi ence he said: "As a rule, legis lators are interested first in the welfare of their districts and of their state, without re gard to party affiliation, and they will listen to reason." Boyd also said he was "quite impressed by the way legislators make time for their constituents" despite a heavy work load. County Delegation Of the Jackson county dele gation he said: "Bob Duncan, a vigorous and dynamic man who is very busy, is doing an excellent job as speaker. Sen. Edwin R. Durno (R-Medford) and Mrs. Evelyn Nye (R-Medford) in the House are doing a very adequate job of repre senting all segments of their constituency and yet seem fully aware of and interested in statewide problems." Boyd said that what he got was the real flavor that one cannot get by reading of the legislature's actions or by watching it from the gallery. Boyd was the first of a num ber of students who will, in terne at the legislature this session one from each pub lic and private institution of higher learning in the state. He was selected by the poli tical science department at SOC, where Dr. Marshall Woodell, the department's head, serves as a director of the Citizenship Clearing House. National Program K The Clearing House is a na tional program sponsored by the Ford Foundation and oth ers, with state headquarters at Lewis and Clark college. On the Oregon state level, its board of directors consists of faculty members from each of the higher education institu tions. Its purpose is to encourage participation and interest in government. Students are ex pected to report back their ob servations to other students. Boyd is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard J. Boyd, 431 Ha ven st., Medford. He was grad uated from Medford High school with a national merit scholarship and attended the University of Oregon for one year before enrolling at South ern Oregon college. Past, Present Saluted in Annual Kiwanis Kapers at High School Tha nast and the present were saluted Wednesday eve ning when Kiwanis club pre sented their annual Kapers at the Medford High school audi torium. The Kapers, entitled "Now and Then," compared the Gay 90's with the 20th Century, depicted life as it would have been in the two periods. ciottintr the scenes were Mrs. Sally Champlin as Miss j Gay 90's, dressed in a yeuow frock with pantalets, and Mrs. Margaret Dix as Miss 20th Century, wearing a plum col ored velvet sheath dress, rtntstandina Scenes Oustanding among the scenes was one comparing me melodrama of yesteryear with tnrlav. Tonv Manno played a superb villain who enticed the heroine, Norma i olana, wnn tales of the bright lights of Gold Hill. The play, entitled, "Saved in the Nick of Time," lived up to its title and con trasted wi:h the modern ver sion, a tale described as one that "would sell DaDers." The unmentioned hero of this scene was the prop man, who, while smoking a pipe, managed to hold a door erect and throw snow at appropri ate times. The "then" and iow" com- Cub Scouts Den 11, Pack 8 Den 11 of Pack 8, Jackson school, met March 2. Richard Cole was elected denner, and Mike Updike was elected assistant denner. After the meeting our Den Dad and Den Mother drove us to the Elk Lumber company for a tour of the mill. We saw a flock of mud hens or "coots" that we were told came to live on the mill pond. We saw the logs drawn up from the pond and watched them sawed with the sawyer giving signals all in "finger language." We talked over the radio from a lumber car riage far away, and we saw how lumber is shaped and loaded in train cars. As we left the mill we stopped to watch a truck un load its logs. A One of our den's newest members, Pete Updike, has already left our den because he earned his lion's badge and has become a webelo. At the pack meeting last Thursday, Den' 11 won the cup for -nost attendance. pared a barber shop quartet with The Shadows, rock and roll group from St. Mary's High school, while in the realm of dancing Mr. and Mrs. Bob Church brought back the old in waltz time and students of Colleen Hope School of Dancing danced "bop." Showed Life at Sea Scene three, which showed life at the seashore, was par ticularly enjoyed by the aud ience. The "maidens" of yes teryear at the beach may not have gotten a second glance from a passing swain, but would have run the risk of being "pinched" by the po lice. Dayle Nesheim did an ad mirable Charleston and the Floradora girls in their bright red and green dresses set a lively pace for the show. Those who think the "younger" generation has gone to "pot" would enjoy the Kapers this year. It also shows the "younger" generation the "good (?) olde days." The size of the stage seemed to hamper two scenes. The "bop" couples gave this view er a feeling they were cramped for space. The other scene, a waltz number, was done by six couples and a bal lerina. The ballerina, although in center stage, seemed to dis tract from the waltzing cou ples. Following the intermission a Ttiinctrcl ch rtxr uro e t-ra sentea with Ray Baker as Mr. Then and John Pletsch as Mr. Now. One of the closing selections was the duet by Judy Champ lin and Alecia Buonocore, dressed in pink frocks of the 1890's with ruffled pantalets, singing "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands." The production showed a lot of hard work on the part of the staff. The production will be staged again Thurs day, Friday and Saturday nights. P. H. Disability Rates Are Discussed by Brannock.1 A disability incurred while performing e x t r a-hazardous duty in the Armed Forces dur ing peacetime may make a veteran eligible for the higher rate of service-connected dis ability compensation from the Veterans administration, S. T. Brannock, contact rep resentative at the VA Domici liary, Camp White, said today. Otherwise, Brannock said, VA compensation for a serv ice - connected disability in curred during peacetime is 80 per cent of the rate paid for the same disability suffered during wartime. The law provides that the higher rate is payable for a peacetime disability incurred in "extra-hazardous service, including such service under conditions simulating war," Brannock explained. He pointed out that no spe cific rule can be laid tiown as to what constitutes extra-hazardous service, adding that the VA adjudicates each case on its own merits. However, VA may consider service extra-hazardous if it is performed under conditions recognized as exceptionally dangerous, or if it involves risks beyond those ordinarily encountered in routine peace time duties.
